The great educaonal outcomes produced by an exceponal instuon such as Sydney Technical High School is a synergy of its community members. It was an absolute honour to be part of the annual Sydney Tech Presentaon Day ceremony on Friday 14 February. Not only was it a day that recognised student achievement but it was a day where all stakeholders paused to celebrate a years’ work or more. I was excited to not only congratulate students and their parents but to celebrate the studious work of teachers and staff. It was amazing to see the inducon of Old Boys into the Sydney Tech Hall of Fame and the joy it brought them, demonstrang pride and connecon to Sydney Tech can be truly life-long. I was very impressed to meet and engage with many members of Year 12 class of 2019. My many probing quesons to them about their learning and their future beyond school were met by many quesons they had for me. At mes it felt like an interview or even a cross examinaon. It was perfectly fine as the boys just wanted to be sure I was going to take good care of their alma mater. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of staff and students to make this possible and acknowledge the never ending support by the Parents and Cizens Commiee, the Old Boys and Departmental execuve. I must however, name and thank Mr Trevor Trotman, Ms Cheryl Feigen and Mr Shane Gamage for their exceponal contribuons in making the day possible. The intersecon of staff, parents, students and “Old boys” and the posive interacon between them allow Sydney Tech to flourish. I eagerly look forward to the next significant whole school event, I’m certain the Prefect body are thinking it is the upcoming combined Sydney Tech and St George Girls dance. DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’

REPORT

ASSESSMENTSYear 11 will have their first Preliminary HSC assessment period from Monday 16 March until Friday 20 March. Students and parents are reminded to read the assessment book carefully, which is located on the intranet/Sentral documents under Year 11 Files. Any student who cannot arrive on time or is absent for a task, must phone Ms Wilson at the beginning of the day and provide a medical certificate upon return to school. Any student who is absent in the five days prior to the assessment week is also to supply a medical certificate. Year 11 interim reports will be distributed later this term and will communicate how your son has transitioned into the senior school in each of his subjects. Letters will be sent home to inform parents of students who are causing concern due to their lack of preparation and progress.Year 12 will have their next HSC assessment period from Monday 23 March until Friday 27 March. Students and parents are reminded to read the assessment book carefully, which is located on the intranet under Year 12 Files. Any student who cannot arrive on time or is absent for a task, must phone Mr Grinham at the beginning of the day and provide a medical certificate upon return to school. Any student who is absent in the five days prior to the assessment week is also to supply a medical certificate. Year 12 mid year reports will be distributed early in Term 2. Letters will be sent home to inform parents of students who are causing concern due to their lack of preparation and progress. SAVE THE DATE: Parent/Teacher Interviews for Year 12 is Friday 3 April 2020.

INTERIM REPORTSFor a few years now, STHS has provided the students and parents of Year 7 with an interim report at the end of Term 1. While not a comprehensive record of student achievement like that of the Semester Report which will follow at the end of Term 2, the interim report gives parents an indication of the progress their son has made in his transition to high school in terms of his organisation, attendance, socialisation and engagement. Beginning in 2018, a similar process also takes place for Year 11 as they will have interim reports completed by their teachers and provided to their parents indicating how they have commenced in their first term in the senior school. The Year 11 interim report will communicate a student’s dedication to their studies, organisation, attendance and appropriateness of the subject selection. The Year 11 interim report acknowledges the steep learning curve some students experience in their first term of the Preliminary HSC and how communication between school and home can support student achievement and wellbeing. These will be sent home to families at the end of this month.

SCHOOL STREAMExcellent communication with our school community is an important part of our overall strategic directions. Due to the ongoing generosity of the P&C, we recently launched an app – School Stream – that can deliver timely messages to families direct to their mobile device. The feedback from parents in 2019 was overwhelmingly positive. The app allows parents to access our school calendar and receive alert notification of important updates when they arise. See the flyer in this edition for more information. The app also allows interaction with Sentral and its Parent Portal. Having access to the Sentral Parent Portal is extremely important. Registration emails were sent to all Year 7 parents last month.

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATIONA student in our school is currently receiving treatment which results in a lowered immune system. This means that the student is more prone to getting ill from infections. As the student is not contagious but has a chronic illness, it is important that he participates actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. A major concern is that if this student develops measles, chicken pox, whooping cough or influenza, he could become seriously ill. It is important that we prevent this situation from occuring. If your child has or may have measles or chicken pox, it is important that you:1. Do not send them to school2. Notify the School Principal as

soon as possible.3. Take them to your GP or

medical centre to confirm diagnosis if possible.

BUILDING FUNDSydney Technical High School was relocated to the current site in Bexley from the city and the school opened in 1953. The building is very solid, but not very flexible and of course aspects of the school require constant upgrades. The financial support of our parent and alumni community is critical in renovating school facilities through support of our Building Fund. Every donation to the fund over $2 is tax deductible. At the moment, the Building Fund will be paying for the upgrade to the junior boys toilets. Recently, the Building Fund has renovated the senior toilets and there has been a major upgrade to the boys’ change rooms, completed in 2018. We also renovated the meeting room, a venue much in demand for parent meetings, faculty seminars and professional learning workshops. Can I urge you, on behalf of our school community, to consider contributing generously to this very worthwhile fund, as we all benefit, towards ensuring that our students learn in an environment which is fit for our purpose: OPTIMUM LEARNING!

LIBRARY FUNDWant to be ‘rich and famous’? Then make it a rule to read daily. Famous and very rich people like financier Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates read daily. A number of our students are avid readers and the 7-10 English reading program has given many students a great appetite for good books. Our Library Fund gives parents and alumni the opportunity to donate to the Library. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. The fund recently enabled us to renovate the whole area to make it modern, user friendly and a place to hang out. Open every day at 8am, the Library Fund lets the school keep interesting, thought provoking and modern books available for our students. The school introduced the READ program in 2018. Every student and teacher are required to read for 20 minutes every morning.Could I urge all parents to contribute generously to the Library Fund, so that we can keep up to date with the sorts of novels and series that your son enjoys, and put them on the path to becoming lifelong readers.

PAYMENTS TO THE BUILDING FUND AND LIBRARY FUND CAN BE MADE:• on line via the school website - Parent Online Payment (POP)

• at the school office with cash, cheque or credit card• by phone using credit card

WELLBEING REPORT

The 2020 school year is now well underway with many activities planned for our students this term. Year 7 are leading the charge, having already completed their transition program, a swimming test at Col Jones Swimming Centre, a Peer support lesson with their Year 9 Peer Leaders as part of the school’s wellbeing program and a three day school camp at Point Wolstoncroft. For all our other year groups, Wellbeing activities will be held in Week 8 and Week 10 of this term, and continue for the rest of the year with three topics each term. Each of the topics selected this year aim to reflect the students’ needs and interests thanks to data available from Sentral Wellbeing. The Wellbeing Team have managed to retain sessions in 2020 around organisation and establishing relationships for juniors, fit for excellence program, and a number of guest speakers and performers targeting issues such as bullying, resilience, study skills, goal setting, risk taking behaviour and mental health. Our Careers Adviser and Counsellors are also actively involved in delivering presentations to students at these Wellbeing Assemblies with sessions like ‘Living a Balanced Life’, ‘Year 10 Work Experience’, ‘University Pathways’ and ‘Scholarships’. The Wellbeing Team work tirelessly around developing this agenda so as to provide meaningful and engaging sessions for all students as a vehicle for allowing pastoral care to better assist student wellbeing and academic performance at STHS.

CAMPSThe Year 7 Adviser Mr Davis reports a most enjoyable camp at Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Centre that saw so many boys challenge themselves and encourage each other to complete the activities offered to them on camp. These included the Giant Swing, High Ropes Course, Archery, Kayaking, Sailing, Rafting and a Study Skills session which focussed on learning styles, home study environment, organisation and filing, time management, managing workloads and dealing with distractions. As an accompanying teacher on the camp it was great to meet the boys on a more personal level outside the normal routines of school. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the supervising staff who assisted on Year 7 camp: Mr Davis, Ms Steel, Ms Johnston, Ms Burgess, Mr Carter, Mr Kemp, Mr Gowan and Mr Werner. Next term we have the Year 11 Life Ready camp (formally known as Crossroads) at Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Centre with two guest speakers organised during the first day and night of camp. Howard Smith will be running a workshop for our students on financial literacy and Dr Prue Salter will speak to the boys about effective study skills. Ms Bilton has a special Scavenger Hunt activity planned for the second night of camp and has organised some fun outdoor activities during the day. We also have Year 10 attending the Broken Bay Sport and Recreation camp this year after they had their camp postponed in Term 4 last year due to the bush fires. A Year 9 Camp will also run later in the year which will be held at Nepean Adventure camp located in Douglas Park, south west of Sydney. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents and students that our school is a subscriber to Dr Prue Salter’s study skills website which aims to help your son/s develop essential skills for academic success. There are units of work on topics such as improving time management skills, how to study, research skills, summarising, technology use, brain and memory.

LIBRARY REPORT

NEWS FROM THE CHARLES KINGSFORD

SMITH MEMORIAL

LIBRARY

HOW LIBRARY FUND DONATIONS HELP YOUR CHILDThe beginning of the school year is always a busy time for our library. Not only are we on hand to steer the Year 7s through our collection, we are also here to teach them the kinds of research and study skills that ensure they get the most of their time here at Tech. While Year 7 students have visited the library with their teachers to work on their first assignments, we have helped them to find keywords, guided them from copying and pasting information to paraphrasing and helped them to assess various sources from the internet. Our mission is to help them to take control of their own learning. In week 6, the Year 7 will have their first library lesson as part of Year 7 Orientation and will be invited back to build on these initial lessons throughout the year. Senior students also need refreshers for these skills, especially evaluating the validity of internet sources. We have been promoting the criteria that they should be using when doing research online to help them to make better choices than just their go to website of Wikipedia.Your donations to our school’s library fund have been vital to many changes that you will see this year in the STHS library that will benefit your children daily.

• New fiction, nonfiction and reference books are constantly being added to the library’s collection to enable you child to have access to the latest bestsellers, the most recent research publications and current HSC study guides and textbooks for all subjects taught at STHS or through Distance Education. Last year, we purchased more shelving to hold these resources. Students also have access to a wide range of ClickView videos.

• Magazines and periodicals have been ordered to help your child to keep up with current events including The Economist, Time, Choice, New Internationalist, BBC History, How it Works, Inside Sport, APC (tech), Rolling Stone, Cosmos, Men’s Health, National Geographic and more. These provide essential resources to students on current issues.

• The library will continue our Author in Residence program, providing an opportunity for students to meet and interact with authors and illustrators. Last year, we hosted a graphic artist who led a workshop on creating manga and a slam poet who led a creative writing and public speaking workshop. Both were funded by the library to provide free access for any student who desired to take part. Our school values these creative opportunities for our students. In 2020 we are planning to host a climate scientist to educate our students on how scientists study climate change, and an engaging historian who uses humour to bring history to life for his audience.

• New games have been purchased and have proved essential to students who have cemented relationships before school and during breaks with others. Games bring opportunities for communication, interaction, skill and a mental break from a difficult curriculum that most students face daily. We have a wide range of card games, board games and chess sets available to students. In a world of people glued to technology, these interactions are vital to boys’ formation of relationships and for building a sense of community and building emotional intelligence.

“What a school thinks about its library is a

measure of what it feels about education.” ― Harold Howe

Page 11: Tech Talk Sydney March Technical 2020 High School · as Sydney Technical High School is a synergy of its community members. It was an absolute honour to be part of the annual Sydney

An Academically Selective School for Boys Page 11

• Quiet time for silent reading is another thing the library offers to your sons. To aid in this, the library has purchased more soft seating in addition to the popular bean bags, with the favourite spot being nestled under the stairs for a cosy reading nook. This furniture helps the students to relax and unwind and provides a wide reading area for classes in the library. Anxiety and depression are common problems with gifted students, and this time for reflection and relaxation can help them unwind mentally.

• Books at Breakfast was our student run book club where our students discussed a wide range of issues facing adolescents today through discussions of books set in the modern world with teenagers as the protagonists. Reading and discussing these issues, according to Morris Gleitzman “help young people to develop empathy, insight into themselves and other people, interpersonal communication skills and a capacity not only to develop creative problem-solving strategies, but to recognise that their problems are alive, organic and ever-changing as we are and can only be defeated with bravery and resilience”. Our first selection for our new Lunch Bunch Book Club is “Dear Evan Hansen,” based on the hit musical, which is an examination of the modern life of a teenager. Students of any age can join this student run book club, which will meet at lunch on 30 March.

• Collaborative and independent study space for our senior students is available upstairs in the library. The library purchased more tables and seating for this area last year. When informally polled on what they wanted in the senior section, students responded with more soft seating to sit and read and more space to work together. New furniture arrived last year with plans for more in the works.

• Students are each given a certain amount of printing per person for each term to print assignments, essays, posters, brochures, etc. Library computers are available for students to do research or to create their own work to submit to teachers. We also have laptops for loan. School supplies such as rulers, calculators or USBs are also available for short term loan.

• The library purchased security cameras last year to replace an old, broken system. Cameras assist us in keeping students and their personal belongings safe.

• The library also provides equipment for assessment purposes such as headsets with microphones for speaking and listening components of exams in various faculties and for distance education.

• Educational books, DVDs and journals aid our teachers by supporting curriculum and keeping staff up to date with the latest professional research and best practice. These include resources for our Learning and Support Teachers (LaST) who work with students in the library.

• Along with building our collection, we promote books in different genres so that students can read widely about the world around them. These include Life Skills such as understanding how to pass their Driver’s Test and get their Ls, being able to cook a few basic meals, learning how to write a CV properly and how to interview for a job.

We thank the families who have contributed to the STHS Library Fund and hope that you see how important your donations are to the daily life of students and staff. “A good library supports every area of learning within the school, making the practical application of the more curriculum based areas of learning so much more potent.” -- Morris Gleitzman, author and Australian Children’s LaureateElizabeth GreavesRelieving Teacher Librarian

CAREERS REPORT

2019 COHORT DESTINATIONSThe compilation of data from the 2019 Sydney Tech cohort has now been completed. Of the 162 students who completed the HSC last year 160 are starting university and the other two students are taking a gap year before commencing university next year.Again, our university of choice was overwhelmingly the University of NSW. Our top three universities of choice and the number of students attending them are:UNIVERSITY Number of students enrolledUniversity of New South Wales 96University of Sydney 30University of Technology, Sydney 16

These figures show a doubling of the number of students attending the University of Sydney. Some contributing factors to this increase are:1. The university offering adjustment factors matching UNSW2. An increase in the number of students enrolling in the vocational Allied

Health degrees offered by the university3. A rejection of the trimester system that UNSW has adopted

Courses chosen by the 2019 cohort is consistent with the students of the past few years. The courses chosen are:COURSE Number of studentsCommerce 41Engineering 34Computer Science/IT 28Applied Health 16Medicine 7Actuarial 7Law 6

YEAR 12 PARENTS AND STUDENTS INVITATIONI would like to invite all Year 12 parents and students to a presentation from the University Admission Centre (UAC). It is being held in our Auditorium on Tuesday 7 April from 6-7pm. This presentation will outline the process of how each student applies to university. That is, how to order your five preferences and how to accept multiple offers. UAC is also the organisation that scales the HSC results to form an ATAR. This process will also be addressed in the presentation. I look forward to seeing you.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCEAll of Year 10 have now completed their work experience lesson. This year, work experience will occur in Term 3 Week 4. All of Year 10 are expected to hone their job seeking skills and find relevant work for the week. A copy of the powerpoint lesson has been emailed to all students for reference. A list of employers from last year is also attached to this email. The students also have further information on Moodle - Careers - Year 10.

As part of the lesson, they all completed the Career Voyage. Career Voyage is an internationally recognised, high quality career planning system designed for career seekers above the age of 15. This Jig-Cal package requires the students to answer multiple questions and then offers job and/or career suggestions. The completed paperwork is due by the end of Term 2.Jerry MouzakisRelieving Careers Adviser

P&C REPORT

Upcoming P&C Meetings

All Parents Welcome

The first month of the school year always goes very quickly for all involved. I hope all the new and returning students have all settled down into the school environment and their new class timetables and ready for the big year ahead.

FIRST MEETING OF THE YEARIt was great to see a really big turnout for the first P&C meeting of the school year. It was especially great to see so many new parents of the school attending and keen to get involved and help with the P&C. We hope to see all of you and many more attending future meetings so that the P&C can make the best decisions to maximise the benefits for our diverse student and parent groups. The first meeting also acted as a great opportunity for parents to get to know each other and set the vision for the P&C for the new school year. One of the main goals for the P&C over the past few years is to improve parent communication. The school communicates with parents via many channels, be it from a simple note home via the student, SMS message to parents, the school website, via parents teacher meetings or by parents attending the Parent Partnership program presentations. The school also has a fantastic Facebook page which is updated frequently with relevant and timely information about the happenings at the school. The Schoolstream app (see opposite page for instructions to download) is definitely another great communication channel from the school as it provides timely information straight to your phone. As well as these, the P&C has its own P&C Facebook Group as well as a Whatsapp chat group for each of the year groups to further encourage information flow between parents at the school. However, no matter how much communication or how many channels in which information is being delivered, it is only useful if we, as parents engage with the information. I’m not suggesting we should all know about every part of our child’s school life but at the same time it is important to know enough so we can support, guide and encourage them through the teenage years and bring out their best self.

WELCOME BBQA few weeks ago, we had the P&C Welcome BBQ for all the year 7s as well as other new students to Sydney Technical HS. The event was well attended and it was great to have met all of you who were there. All the boys had a great time playing volleyball and basketball while the parents had a chance to meet each other in person rather than just over the Whatsapp chat group. A big thank you to all of the P&C helpers as well as the teachers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success.Warren MakP&C President
