The Advantage of Using Teamcenter Engineering Software
In essence, Teamcenter is a program that encourages high quality communication between cross-functional groups. The
Teamcenter program reserves space on a server farm known as the Teamcenter vault. As various applications are used,
Teamcenter interacts with them and allows a high degree of organization to the data that is produced or utilized. For example, a
designer sits down to create a simple product such as a toaster. She knows that the toaster is going to be made up of a top
cover, a base, a heating element, and a plug. The designer then starts the Teamcenter program and begins to run CATIA or
some other authoring tool through the program, meaning Teamcenter has hooks that go back to the CATIA application and tag
the data as it’s being created. As the application is being run, the data lives on the user’s account on the local memory of the
computer that they are using. However as soon as the data is saved, the data is copied onto the server farm that is the
Teamcenter vault. As various users of the data need it, Teamcenter controls the access to the data and allows users to continue
to produce other data files associated with the original data. One of the most powerful abilities of Teamcenter is that it allows the
creation of data items. A data item is a container that allows a user to package many different types of “relational” data together.
For example, the designer in the previous case creates a data item called plug. Once the design of the plug is prototyped and
tested, there may be test results generated along with other notes that are pertinent to the design. These various notes and data
files are then packaged into the same data item as the original CATIA part file. Another advantage that the data item affords is
that when the original data file is created there may be new revisions of it that are required as the design or the manufacturing
take place. All of these revisions will be housed inside of the same data item.
Not all data lives in the Teamcenter vault. In some cases Teamcenter is used by other applications that access data and operate
on it then send it out to some other server. For example, in the case of the Metrix program as shown in the figure above.

Program Vs PWP
• Program = Product Group participating in any given contract/SOW e.g.,
Overhead Console, Door Panels, etc.
• Product Work Package (PWP) = Represents work packages containing and
describing Engineering work to be done to develop a product within the
overall framework of a Program.

Thin Client vs Thick (Rich/Local) Client
1. Review the Location, TcEng, and
whether you are a CAD user or
Teamcenter User. Make the correct
selections based on your Login
needs. You are either a CAD user
or a Teamcenter User.
2. If a CAD User, click on the Launch
CAD & Tc button.
3. If a Teamcenter (only) User, click
on the Launch Tc Thin Client.
Thin Client: Teamcenter
user interface that provides
a streamlined browser-
based view of product
information stored in a
Teamcenter database. The
thin client is configured in
the Web tier, which creates
and serves its Web pages
to the client.
Thick (Rich/Local) Client:
Java-based user interface
to Teamcenter installed on
user workstations. The rich
client accesses Teamcenter
databases using a remote
or local server.
13
Log In – Thin Client
1. Enter your user name.
2. Enter your password.
3. Click the Login button.
14
Log In – Thin Client (cont’d.)
1. Click the “I accept the
risk and want to run this
application.” button.
2. Click on the Run button.
After you login, you’ll
receive this security
warning. By clicking this,
the applet from Siemens
runs. There is no damage
to your computer. This
needs to be run so that
Teamcenter Thin Client
can be used.

Get Familiar with the Teamcenter Navigation
1 Menu Bar and Button Bar
Provides access to menu and button commands and lists the current user name, group, role, revision rule, and server.
2 Navigation Pane
Provides search functionality, link groups, and application buttons. You can expand and collapse the entire pane and pane groups, select what is displayed in primary and secondary areas, and configure the display of applications.
3 Component Pane
Displays component hierarchies in a tree view. You can resize this pane to be wider or narrower.
4 Data Pane
The data pane displays tabbed information.
• Depending on the type of object selected and the configuration specified in
your installation’s XRT style sheet, you may see tabs such as Overview,
Details, Related Datasets, Attachments, History, Change History, Where
Used, Structure, Impact Analysis, Available Revisions, and Viewer.
• Groups of objects within a tab, called object sets, can be configured in the
XRT style sheet. Each group of information can be configured to display
in table, list, or thumbnail. Each group can also be supported by action
command buttons such as Cut and Copy.

Cut, Copy, Paste, and Delete Data Objects
You can use cutting, copying, and pasting to move data in your workspace by:
• Cutting an information object from one application and pasting it into another Teamcenter application.
• Copying data to the clipboard and pasting it into another Teamcenter application.
• Copying data to the clipboard and pasting it into an application outside the Teamcenter environment.
If you have delete permission for an object, you can also delete data from the Teamcenter database, but
you cannot delete an object from the database if that object is referenced in multiple locations.
To delete an object from the database, you may need to:
• Perform a where-referenced search to locate all references to the object.
• Contact all the owners of the references and ask them to delete their references to the object.
• When there are no remaining references, you can delete an object for which you have delete permission.
Note An object contained in multiple folders can be deleted by a single action if the object is not referenced
by other non-folder objects.
