Ursulines of Central Province March 2020Vol. 50, No. 3

Holy Week and Easter GreetingsAs we draw near to the celebration of the Paschal Mystery

we pray that the Risen One look upon us and our world with mercy, fill us with strength, and send us forth to be

courageous ministers of healing and reconciliation.

A blessed and joyous Easter to all!

We met today for a condensed team meeting using the conference room as our new

site allowing for the “social distancing” space recommended.

We discussed some personnel issues and also worked on some financial matters that needed attention. We are very grateful to Ellette Gibson and Renae Loveland for all their work to keep payrolls and bills on time during these unusual times.

We had several corporation meetings and settled some questions from the Ursuline Education Foundation (UEF).

Healthcare issues and decisions regarding further care of our sisters were discussed.

Let us support one another in prayer and find creative ways to stay connected during these days. Please remember to try to reach out to our sisters in assisted and skilled care with cards and notes. It is hard not to be able to visit them.

SocialJusticeNotes

In this era of “social distancing”, it is a good time to reach out to people, especially those

who cannot get out, by phone and/or card or letter. You might reach out especially to someone who does not get other calls or notes. Most skilled care facilities would be able to share “anonymous notes” with such residents; a call to the director of social services could give guidance. Food banks and other such services will be stretched to the extreme – look for ways to support local non-profits that serve the needs of people who are less able to suffer a loss of income. Contact members of Congress, calling on them to support stimulus programs that help those who are most in need.

Our Sympathy . . .. . . to our sisters at Mère Marie community

on the death of our sister, Mary Peter Bachand,

who died on March 24th.

Angela Merici Grants

This is a reminder for those planning to apply for an Angela Merici Grant that the deadline

for applying is May I, 2020. Guidelines for the grants may be found in the Province Directory on page I-5, the application form on page I-13 and the salary supplement application on page I-15.

Those who are working in ministries with the economically poor and marginalized are encouraged to consider applying for a grant. You’ll also recall that, following our 2018 Province Conference, the criteria were expanded to include the possibility of grants beyond those where Ursulines actively minister. They must, however, be accompanied by a recommendation of an Ursuline Sister.

Those who received grants in the current year are reminded that evaluations are due on May 1, 2020. Evaluation forms are found in the Province Directory on page I-16.

Please send all forms to Adele Brennan via email at [email protected] or by post to the province office. If you have questions regarding the forms or need copies, please contact Adele.

Mentoring Moments . . .

Goodbye . . .. . . to Sueling Lin from the Province of China, who was participating in a Ministry to Ministers Sabbatical Program at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio. She will be visiting family and friends in California before returning to her province.

Province Intentions 2019—2024Mentoring, trusting and empowering those with

whom we carry our Ursuline story.

We’ve shared how each of us is mentoring and being mentored in our lives and ministries.

What a joy to realize how reciprocal mentoring is! Here is a taste of our exchanges:

What is one aspect of your “Ursuline World Alive in Angela’s Spirit”

in your life?• “I feel closest to Angela when engaged in the

ministry of spiritual direction, listening with another and helping to support that person’s spiritual journey.”

• “Right now, the elderly in the church are my circle in this missionary experience of living in the Alton Church.”

• “I love collaborating with 165 co-workers at Ursuline in Dallas as they meet in small Angela Merici Advisory groups several times a year and reflect on St. Angela’s words and spirit over breakfast before school begins.”

• “Working in archival ministry with a new intern from Massachusetts. Together we’re creating a glossary of religious life vocabulary to help others understand unfamiliar words used in religious life.”

• “Each day as I am called into my marketplace, I bring my joy-filled spirit imbued with the spirit andcharismofANGELAtothoseImeet.”

• “I share my Ursuline life and St. Angela’s spirit with the pastor, parishioners and students in the parish school.”

We hope to continue our discussions on how to engage the province in the future as we explore this topic together. We wish each one the joy and challenge of mentoring moments!
