Bereshit/Genesis 19: 18-20

(Gen 19: 18-20 Koren Pub) 18And Lot said to them, Oh, not so, my Lord:‎ 19behold now, thy servant has

found favour in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shown to me in saving my

life; I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:‎ 20behold now, this city is near to

flee to, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape there, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. (MT)

(Gen 19: 18-20 Brenton) 18And Lot said to them, I pray, Lord, 19since thy servant has found mercy before thee, and

thou hast magnified thy righteousness, in what thou doest towards me that my soul may live, —but I shall not be able to

escape to the mountain, lest perhaps the calamity overtake me and I die. 20Behold this city is near for me to escape

thither, which is a small one, and there shall I be preserved, is it not little? and my soul shall live because of thee. (LXX)

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 18-20 Lot’s Bargaining

Lot is making a gamble by engaging the Messengers, whom he attributed the title Lord (adonay)( י·אדנ )0136 and not YHWH (The Existing One)(ה about an alternative to fleeing ,3068(יהו to the mountains. Lot is likely in a panic and not realising that these Lords have his best interest at heart and were not guiding him into more peril. Lot is asking the Messengers (Angels) for favor in his escape. The mountain, in his mind, is not a sure bet. Rather, fleeing to a ‘small’ city is a better option. The Mountain is a significant place of hiding:

– Isa 33:14-16 Brenton 14The sinners in Sion have departed; trembling shall seize the ungodly. Who will tell you that a fire is kindled? Who will tell you of the eternal place? 15He that walks in righteousness, speaking rightly, hating transgression and iniquity, and shaking his hands from gifts, stopping his ears that he should not hear the judgment of blood, shutting his eyes that he should not see injustice. 16he shall dwell in a high cave of a strong rock: bread shall be given him, and his water shall be sure.

Mountains, a place of refuge:

Five Star Mountains - Dr. Richard Patterson In addition to their natural characteristics of height, durability, and beauty, mountains have served as places of refuge, hideaways, or enjoyment such as mountain climbing, hiking, and winter sports. Mountains at times form natural boundary markers between countries, or other geographical locations. Ancient gods were at times associated with mountains as was the case with the Ugaritic god Baal Zaphon. Mountains are also familiar in figurative language or many common idioms. Thus one can have a “mountain of work” piled on his desk or face a “mountain of debt” or enjoy a “mountain top experience.” In sum, mountains and their significance enjoy wide familiarity in human experience. It is small wonder, then, they are also objects of frequent mention in the Bible. –continued…

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 18-20 Lot’s Bargaining

Mountains, a place of refuge: Indeed, mountains and hills were particular places of interest in Israel. They are singled out for mention several hundred times in the Scriptures. Due to their durability, height, and make-up, they often became natural places for refuge and security, territorial boundaries, and strategic military locations (cf. Josh. 14:12-15). In the days of the Midianites some Israelites sought refuge in hills and mountains (Judg. 6:2) and in the time of the Philistines (1 Sam. 14:22) some sought refuge in the hill country of Ephraim. A fleeing Elijah hid in a cave on Mount Horeb (I Kings 19:8-18). Mount Tabor served as a vantage point from which Barak was able to rout the forces of the Canaanites led by Sisera, which were deployed below in the Plain of Esdraelon across the eastern fork of the Kishon River (Judg. 4:12-16; 5:19-2).1

https://bible.org/article/five-star-mountains

YHWH Elohim is a strong mountain and a sure place of refuge:

– Psa 124:1-5 Brenton (125 MT) 1A Song of Degrees. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Sion: he that dwells in

Jerusalem shall never be moved. 2The mountains are round about her, and so the Lord is round about his people, from

henceforth and even for ever. 3For the Lord will not allow the rod of sinners to be upon the lot of the righteous; lest the

righteous should stretch forth their hands to iniquity. 4Do good, O Lord, to them that are good, and to them that are upright

in heart. 5But them that turn aside to crooked ways the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be

upon Israel.

Commentary

Page 16: Team D Songs of Praise to Yah · Shout to Yah with a voice of exaltation (voice of exaltation) For Yahuah Most High is awesome He is a great King over all the earth He has subdued

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 18-20 Lot’s Bargaining

The Anointed One even instructs a future generation to flee to the mountains for protection on the cusp of the tribulation:

– Mat 24:15-21 KJV 15When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Commentary

Lot should have taken their word without question. After all, is he not conversing with Messengers (Angels) and recognising them as such? Also, him knowing the relationship between his uncle and YHWH? We should not be too hard on Lot as we can also find ourselves in similar situations being indecisive, uncertain and figuring out life on a moment to moment basis. Lot makes a pitch for another location to get hold up in. A city that was close enough, but maybe in his mind not likely on the list of places slated for the punishment of YHWH Elohim by His messengers (angels).

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 21-23

(Gen 19: 21, 22 Koren Pub) 21And he said to him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not

overthrow this city, for which thou hast spoken.‎‎ 22Haste thee, escape there; for I cannot do anything till thou be

come there. Therefore the name of the city was called Żo῾ar. 23The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot

entered into Żo῾ar.‎ (MT)

(Gen 19: 21, 22 Brenton) 21And he said to him, Behold, I have had respect to thee also about this thing, that I should

not overthrow the city about which thou hast spoken. 22Hasten therefore to escape thither, for I shall not be able to do

anything until thou art come thither; therefore he called the name of that city, Segor. 23The sun was risen upon the earth,

when Lot entered into Segor.(LXX)

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 21-23 Commentary I Relent

The messengers relented and gave Lot a chance to escape to Zoar. This city was also slated to be punished and the Messengers spared it for the sake of Lot. This shows that the Messengers under the charge of YHWH of Hosts also have a measure of authority and autonomy in executing their assignment. We maybe can look at this as an extension of Mercy that YHWH bestows. This change of mind of the Messengers (Angels) is interesting, as Lot’s advocacy for himself, and not the inhabitants of Zoar, causes them to change their mind. Whereas, his uncle’s advocacy was for the righteous and including Lot. Was Lot that indifferent as to not be concerned for the souls of man or he just understood the nature of the people whom he lived among and though about self preservation? Lot was given enough time, as he fled in the dead of night, to get to Zoar as the sun rose on the land.

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 24, 25 Commentary

Fire from the Sky

Question:

– How can ‘The Lord’ rain fire from heaven from ‘The Lord’?

In verse 24, YHWH (The Existing One)(ה is used twice, unlike the use of title Lord ,3068(יהו (adonay)( י·אדנ )0136 in verse 18 attributed to the Messengers (Angels) doing his bidding. Is YHWH acting from a position of omnipresence or is this a situation where possibly the third messenger bearing The Name of YHWH? Fire rained down from heaven in the same manner as the windows of heaven opened, and waters from above poured in with Noah. Punishment comes from above it seems:

What does Genesis 19:24 mean?

Finally the Lord's judgment falls on Sodom and Gomorrah. By the literal words of this verse the Lord Himself rains sulfur and fire on these cities "out of heaven." There's no question that Genesis means to communicate that this fire and brimstone came directly from the Lord as His judgment against the people of these cities for their grave sins. While the angels in the prior passages spoke of their role in destroying the city, those seem to have been "team" accounts, with the angels speaking as part of God's planned process for this event.

Human nature often balks at God's wrath. This, as it turns out, is why God went through the very process we see in Genesis; God proves in no uncertain terms that His wrath is justified. The sins of these cultures have been ongoing (Genesis 13:13), and well-known (Genesis 14:22–23). God even allowed Abraham to set his own conditions for Sodom's rescue—an incredibly weak standard which the culture failed to meet (Genesis 18:32).

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 26 Commentary

Don’t look back/Never look back When things become to familiar it is difficult to leave them behind. When you put your hand to the plow you should not look back:

– Luk 9:57-62 TLV 57As‎they‎were‎traveling‎on‎the‎road,‎someone‎said‎to‎Him,‎“I‎will‎follow‎You‎wherever‎You‎go.”‎58But Yeshua

said‎to‎him,‎“Foxes‎have‎dens‎and‎birds‎of‎the‎air‎have‎nests,‎but‎the‎Son‎of‎Man‎has‎nowhere‎to‎lay‎His‎head.”‎59He said to

another,‎“Follow‎Me.”‎But‎that‎one‎said,‎“First‎let‎me‎go‎and‎bury‎my‎father.”‎60But Yeshua said‎to‎him,‎“Let‎the‎dead‎bury‎

their‎own‎dead.‎But‎you,‎go‎and‎proclaim‎the‎kingdom‎of‎God.”‎61Then‎another‎also‎said,‎“I‎will‎follow‎You,‎Master,‎but‎first‎

let‎me‎say‎goodbye‎to‎those‎in‎my‎home.”‎62But Yeshua said‎to‎him,‎“No‎one‎who‎has‎put‎his‎hand‎to‎the‎plow‎and‎looked‎

back‎is‎fit‎for‎the‎kingdom‎of‎God.”

A plausible reason for Lots' wife looking back is that she is a home born citizen of Sodom and the dominant tribe of

people living there. Everything about her is encapsulated within that city and people. When Lot left his uncle, he had

substance, may not have been married and was already accustomed to living the nomadic life. A city girl would have

caused‎him‎to‎think‎otherwise,‎hence‎another‎reason‎for‎him‎to‎be‎at‎the‎gate‎‘promoting‎city‎life’.‎Even‎the‎anointed‎

one‎had‎something‎to‎say‎in‎the‎form‎of‎a‎warning‎for‎this‎generation‎and‎singled‎out‎Lot’s‎wife:

– Luk 17:26-33 KJV 26And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. 28Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. 31In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. 32Remember Lot's wife. 33Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Page 23: Team D Songs of Praise to Yah · Shout to Yah with a voice of exaltation (voice of exaltation) For Yahuah Most High is awesome He is a great King over all the earth He has subdued

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 26 Commentary

Don’t look back/Never look back Though it may have been difficult for Lot to relocate again, he was prepared to make the transition with a bit of coaxing.‎For‎his‎wife‎though,‎her‎heart‎was‎not‎ready‎to‎make‎that‎transition.‎This‎situation‎with‎Lot’s‎wife‎may‎be‎the‎same for many of us, and it would take time to get disconnected from Babylon and get connected to Mt. Zion. When the call comes from YHWH, do not hesitate to make a move with Him.

Lot and his family had two locations to seek refuge. One that seemed difficult, the mountains, and a city not too far off in the plain that was easily accessible. Our lives can be summed up from those two situations and holding on to the familiar things. To reach the place of safety in the mountains require work to climb. Whereas, getting to the perceived safety of a city in the plain is easy and requires not much effort. Getting to the peak of YHWH Elohim may take some sweat equity, but you are guaranteed protection.

Further, they were given instruction from a Messenger not to look back. Their word has authority as coming from YHWH Elohim Himself, and she may have been in disbelief that such a faith can come to such a great city. No city is immune from punishment, but if the people humble themselves like Nineveh, Jonah 3, YHWH can relent from the evil for the sake of the righteous.

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 27, 28 Commentary

Punishment complete

This event, fire raining from out of heaven, seem to transpire within the timespan of a day. From the moment Abraham and Sarah entertained the men and YHWH, to the point of Lot’s departure for Zoar, is a consistent sequence of time. What should come to mind is the Day of YHWH wrath. (https://bible.knowing-jesus.com/topics/The-Coming-Day-Of-God~s-Wrath)

As promised to Noah, punishment would not be via floods of water, but of fire:

– Gen 9:14-15 Brenton 14And it shall be when I gather clouds upon the earth, that my bow shall be seen in the cloud. 15And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you, and between every living soul in all flesh, and there shall no longer be water for a deluge, so as to blot out all flesh.

– 2Pe 3:6-7 KJV 6Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Abraham’s heart may not have been at ease and most likely hoping that his intersession would have stayed the punishment if at least 20 righteous people were to be found. What would have been coursing through the mind of Abraham when he saw the smoke rising? “My nephew Lot.” Abraham was a man who had a heart for people and so does his Elohim.

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 29 Commentary Keeping His Word

You can count on YHWH Elohim keeping his word. Abraham took Him at his word and though the cities were still punished, Lot and his family were taken out by YHWH Elohim’s messengers (angels):

– Psa 86:5 Brenton (87 MT) 5For thou, O Lord, art kind, and gentle; and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee.

– Psa 102:6-8 Brenton (103 MT) 6The Lord executes mercy and judgment for all that are injured. 7He made known his ways to Moses, his will to the children of Israel. 8The Lord is compassionate and pitiful, long-suffering, and full of mercy.

Sadly, there were none righteous and Lot’s lot is because of his uncle. In like manner his called and chosen (Matthew 22:14 KJV), alive in those days, would be taken out of and not experience the punishment to come for the ‘ungodly’, ‘unrighteous’, ‘the wicked’ etc.

(Gen 19: 30-32 Koren Pub) 30And Lot went up out of Żo῾ar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 30-32 Commentary Thinking things through

What Lot should have done first he does last. He is not the only one that exhibit said behaviour. Many of us would be guilty of doing the same if faced with the same situation. He was told to flee to the mountain but instead made a case to stay in another location, that was easily accessible. His daughters are now center stage as the spotlight is now focused on them. In their reasoning, mainly the older one, a plan is hatched without thinking it through.

This would have been flawed thinking from his daughters, seeing they were in Zoar and there must have been at least one man among the citizen’s ranks. Alternatively, the wickedness of the people of Zoar was still manifest, seeing that the city was spared but attitudes did not, or may not, change. Lot may have thought it best to depart and head to the hills as first told is the attitudes persisted. With this move, his daughter could have assumed that the majority of life was extinguished from the punishment meted out. Thus, his eldest daughter reasoning to raise up ‘seed’ to their father. They are continuing in the same vain as their father with decision making

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 33-35

(Gen 19: 33-35 Koren Pub) 33And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay

with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34And it came to pass on the

morrow, that the firstborn said to the younger, Behold, I lay last night with my father: let us make him drink wine

this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35And they made their

father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay

down, nor when she arose. (MT)

(Gen 19: 33-35 Brenton) 33So they made their father drink wine in that night, and the elder went in and lay with her father that night, and he knew not when he slept and when he rose up. 34And it came to pass on the morrow, that the elder said to the younger, Behold, I slept yesternight with our father, let us make him drink wine in this night also, and do thou go in and sleep with him, and let us raise up seed of our father. 35So they made their father drink wine in that night also, and the younger went in and slept with her father, and he knew not when he slept, nor when he arose. Bereshit/Genesis 19: 33-35 Commentary Indecent Act

Wh@t type of wine was this, that made Lot incapacitated to the point he knew not what was happening? Also, where would this wine come from knowing that they left Sodom with only the clothing on their backs? Most likely the wine was picked up in Zoar on their way out to the mountains, or maybe they left Sodom with it. Wine that was so strong, it accomplished it’s intended task. Lot was unaware of what is happening, and not in full control of his bodily functions. In all honesty, he was raped by his daughters by today’s standard, and elderly abuse thrown in also. Could their behaviour be as a result of the influence of Sodom culture on his children? How is this going to influence the children?

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 36-38 Commentary The Birth of two Nations

Sodom and Gomorrah were overturned and it can be alluded that Moab and Ammon rose in their place:

– Zep 2:9 Brenton 9Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Moab shall be as Sodoma, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrha; and Damascus shall be left as a heap of the threshing-floor, and desolate for ever: and the remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remnant of my nations shall inherit them.

Both Moab and Ammon have a connection to these overthrow cities through bloodline and culture. After this, Lot and his daughters are no longer featured prominently except through their children. Still, Lot is not forgotten by YHWH:

– Deu 2:17-19 Brenton 17that the Lord spoke to me, saying, 18Thou shalt pass over this day the borders of Moab to Aroer; 19and ye shall draw nigh to the children of Amman: do not quarrel with them, nor wage war with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Amman for an inheritance, because I have given it to the children of Lot for an inheritance.

Moab and Ammon, nations in the eyes of YHWH, were allocated portions of land as he would do with Israel some generations later.

• Moab (of his father)(ב 4124(מוא

• Ammon (son of my people)(י ון)(tribal/in bread5971)/1151(בן־עמ 5983(עמ

The LXX provides additional detail that is not contained in the MT about Moab and Ammon in terms of the meaning of their name. It can also be assumed that Moab was the elder of Ammon but are the same age and share a close relationship.

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 36-38 Commentary The Birth of two Nations

Sons of Lot

The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; the younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi (Gen. 19:30-38). Genesis 19:37 The first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.

Moab (SHD 4124, from the father). He was the patriarch of the nation known as Moab. Moab also a territory, means beautiful land.

Ammon (SHD 5983) from (SHD 5971): tribal, i.e. inbred; or Ben-Ammi (Heb.) Son of Ammi = “god of Am” – Bullinger. He became the patriarch of the nation of Ammon.

Moab was to take part in the lineage of Messiah through Ruth (a Moabitess), wife of Boaz, the mother of Obed, the father of Jesse, the father of David (see Ruth 4:16-22). http://www.ccg.org/weblibs/study-papers/p212b.html

Bereshit/Genesis 19: 36-38 Commentary The Birth of two Nations

Moab and Ammon stand as separate nations and lived alongside Israel and Judah, the divided nations of Jacob. These four nations have inter-tangled lives throughout their history and are part of the end time prophetic events to unfold:

Mesha Stele - The Mesha Stele, also known as the Moabite Stone, is a stele (inscribed stone) set up around 840 BCE by King Mesha of Moab (a kingdom located in modern Jordan). Mesha tells how Chemosh, the god of Moab, had been angry with his people and had allowed them to be subjugated to Israel, but at length Chemosh returned and assisted Mesha to throw off the yoke of Israel and restore the lands of Moab. Mesha describes his many building projects.[1] Some say it is written in the Phoenician alphabet, but others say it is written in the Old Hebrew script, which is closely related. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesha_Stele

The complex relationship between Abraham and Lot continues with their respective offspring and would only end when The Anointed One establishes peace.
