PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
A strong team is essential to driving organizational growth and success in today’s rapidly changing world. Business leaders rely on having high-functioning teams that work together toward common goals and across functions.
Crain’s Team Build 2.0 is an interactive program that emphasizes how to build and sustain effective teams.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As a result of having completed this program, team participants will be able to:1. Describe characteristics of a high performing team2. Assure that their team stays relevant and continuously adds value 3. State how their team fits into the big picture of the company’s mission, vision and goals4. Describe how to approach and solve problems5. Communicate effectively and build relationships, within their team and with others6. Maximize effectiveness of their team

DAY 1 | 8:30 A.M. - 5 P.M.
Introduction & describe characteristics of a high-performing team
8:30 - 10:00 Introduce selves and share experiences of working on teams; what worked well? What didn’t What are participants’ needs for this workshop? What kind of team member am I?
Storytelling, flip charts, presentations - facilitator summarize and insert “expert” content
State at least four characteristics of a high-performing team
Break 10:00 - 10:15
State how their team fits into the big picture of the company’s mission, vision and goals
10:15 - 11:30 Map your team in the organization (up/down/across & outside-in); create draft team value statement, objectives and operating principles
Work in teams to complete documents and share some output with group
Draft of team map, value statement, objectives and operating principles; state company big picture and how the team fits
Lunch 11:30 - 12:30
Describe how to approach and solve problems and maximize team effectiveness
12:30 - 2:30 How does team make decisions and leverage the skills of the team members; how does team declare problems and communicate for accountability and breakthrough?
Team exercise: given a task, assess how well team performs under pressure and with monkey wrench changes thrown in
Recognize and discuss issues with respect to prioritization; clarity of goal/problem; communication effectiveness
Break 2:30-2:45
Maximize effectiveness of their team
2:45-3:30 Introducing the Tool Kit: Team Charter; Shared purpose/vision/mission; communicating for accountability and breakthrough (separating face from assumptions, language of commitment, etc.)
Handouts; discuss how the problem solving may have gone better with some of these tools; examples from their work teams; pair shares
State at least three ideas they can use to improve the performance of their team
Assure team stays relevant and adds value
3:30 - 4:15 What is success today? How might that differ in x years? Barriers and opportunities to add value
Table group discussions Describe success for the team and state at least 2 potential future challenges and 1 potential new source of value
Reflect 4:15-5:00 What was observed, learned, new questions

9:00 - 11:00 (with break built in)
Where does uncertainty come in? How can a team make the most of it? How can the team turn uncertainty to its advantage?
Simulation on working in a VUCA environment (team members & perhaps the leader, change; the organization may change; (the operating environment may too)
State at least four conclusions drawn from the simulation
Communicate effectively and build relationships, within their team and with others
11:00 - 12:00 Conflict and collaboration Discussion with examples Discuss how conflicts can be dealt with and methods to collaborate within and across teams

Describe how to approach and solve problems
1:00 - 2:30 Presenting a framework for building an innovative mindset
Exercise of working through the framework with the team
State the elements of the framework
Break 2:30 - 2:45
Maximize effectiveness of their team
2:45 - 3:45 Other roadblocks and challenges to overcome: virtual teams; poor leadership; culture
Post-it note activity; participants post challenges while others post proposed solutions
State three challenges and bestpractice ideas for dealing with them
Maximize effectiveness of their team
3:45 - 4:45 Tying it all together: creating an action plan based on the concepts from this class
Handouts; examples; pair shares State at least three ideas they can use to improve the performance of their team
