ABSTRACT

Handayani, Sri. 2015. Teaching Reading Comprehension for the Tenth Grade

Students of SMAN 1 Nalumsari Jepara in 2014/ 2015 Academic Year by

Using RAP (Read-Ask-Put) Strategy. Skripsi, English Education

Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muria Kudus

University. Advisors: (i) Drs. Suprihadi, M.Pd, (ii) Rismiyanto, SS, M.Pd

Key words: Teaching Reading Comprehension, The Tenth Grade Students, RAP

(Read-Ask-Put) Strategy, Narrative Text

Reading comprehension is one of important skills in teaching and learning

especially at the level of education. In fact, the English teacher stated that most of

the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Nalumsari Jepara still get difficulties to build

and develop their comprehension, pronunciation and spelling of the text especially

genre. It was found that the students get difficulties in understanding the meaning

of the English text. It is caused by their lack of vocabulary so that they have a

difficulty in understanding meaning word by word. Most of the students also

stated that reading is long and boring activity. The strategy that the teacher used

that is modeling strategy is also less satisfied in teaching learning process.

Because of that reason, the researcher wants to use the interesting strategy in

teaching reading comprehension. That strategy is RAP (Read-Ask-Put) Strategy.

The purpose of this strategy is to improve skill in reading comprehension within

all students.

The objective of the research is to find out if there is a significant

difference of the reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1

Nalumsari Jepara in 2014/2015 academic year academic year before and after

being taught by using RAP (Read-Ask-Put) Strategy.

The research design used in this research is quasi experimental research.

The researcher used cluster random sampling. The sample is the students of class

X1 with consist of 39 students. This research uses a test of multiple choices as the

instrument of the research.

The result of this research shows that there is a significant difference of the

reading comprehension of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Nalumsari Jepara

in 2014/2015 academic year before and after being taught by using RAP (Read-

Ask-Put) Strategy in the level of significance 0.05 (5 %) and degree of freedom

(df) = N-1 = 38.

Considering the process and the results of this research, the researcher

suggests that (i) The student must be brave to guess what happened in the text, (ii)

the students must be active when they translate, (iii) the students must believe that

they have potential to be better. Therefore they must study hard continuously and

also never give up.

ABSTRAK

Handayani, Sri. 2015. Pengajaran Pemahaman Membaca untuk Siswa Kelas

Sepuluh SMAN 1 Nalumsari Jepara pada Tahun Pelajaran 2014/ 2015

Menggunakan RAP (Baca-Tanyakan-Letakkan) Strategi. Skripsi,

Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan,

Universitas Muria Kudus. Pembimbing : (i) Drs. Suprihadi, M.Pd, (ii)

Rismiyanto, SS, M.Pd

Kata Kunci: Pengajaran Pemahaman Membaca, Siswa Kelas Sepuluh, RAP

(Baca-Tanyakan-Letakkan) Strategi, Text Narrative

Pemahaman Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan penting dalam belajar

mengajar khususnya ditingkat pendidikan. Bahkan, guru bahasa Inggris

menyatakan bahwa sebagian besar siswa kelas sepuluh SMAN 1 Nalumsari Jepara

masih mendapatkan kesulitan dalam memahami bacaan. Ditemukan bahwa siswa

mendapatkan kesulitan dalam memahami makna teks bahasa Inggris. Hal ini

disebabkan oleh kurangnya kosa kata sehingga mereka memiliki kesulitas dalam

memahami arti kata demi kata. Sebagian besar siswa juga menyatakan bahwa

membaca adalah kegiatan yang panjang dan membosankan. Strategi yang

digunakan guru adalah strategi pemodelan yang dirasakan kurang memuaskan

dalam proses belajar mengajar. Karena alas an itu, peneliti ingin menggunakan

strategi yang menarik dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca. Strategi itu adalah

RAP (Baca-Tanyakan-Letakkan) Strategi. Tujuan dari strategi ini adalah untuk

meningkatkan keterampilan pemahaman membaca disemua siswa.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat

perbedaan yang signifikan dari pemahaman membaca bagi siswa kelas X SMAN

1 Nalumsari Jepara pada tahun akademik 2014/2015 sebelum dan sesudah

diajarkan melalui RAP (Baca-Tanyakan-Letakkan) Strategi.

freedom (df) = N-1 = 38.

Mengingat pada proses dan hasil dari penelitian ini, peneliti menyarankan

bahwa (i) siswa harus berani menerka apa yang terjadi dalam sebuah text, (ii)

siswa harus aktif ketika siswa menerjemahkan, (iii) siswa harus percaya bahwa

mereka mempunyai potensi yang baik. Oleh karena itu mereka harus belajar lebih

keras dan juga takkan pernah menyerah.
