  • Kate Oates DUVAL HIGH SCHOOL Painting 2650 x 1200 • My story tells the story of my ancestors and changes that took place in

our family as they were dispossessed by another culture. The blue flowing areas represent this invasion. The middle of the picture is my story of how we began. The outer edge of the canvas is dominated by non-Aboriginal culture. I have included in the painting images of old photos that show these changes from my dad's first home under a tree in a reserve, to my dad graduating from university. He was the eldest of over 46 grandchildren, the first to get a university degree.

  • Assessments of Portfolio • mid-Dec. • early Feb. • mid-April • mid-June • early Sept. of next year • early Oct. of next year • early Dec. of next year

  • What is portfolio? • Keeping a portfolio involves having a student make a collection of initial plans, drafts, self

evaluations, feedback from peers and teachers, work of art which the student likes or dislikes, references and collections of their own artwork. The portfolio should providedevidence of students’ learning progress and growth such as their ability to select materials for idea development, quality of work, reflective power for analyzing their own and others work. It also serves the purpose of developing self-reflection, self-monitoring, self-awareness and meta-cognitive skills, through encouraging the students to look at early sketches and mistakes, strengths and weaknesses, and alternative ways of dealing with artwork. It provides a means of continuous assessment of students learning throughout the senior secondary school.

Visual Diary: (just for reference) • Students are encouraged to make a visual diary to record daily visual impressions and

experiences and personal feelings towards events or visual phenomena as their personal data bank for independent study and future artwork. Visual shooting and photo taking are also effective ways of observing and recording experience.

The sequence of the content of your portfolio book should be:

    • *each point should have documentations (see the point 8 on the next section)

    – A short statement about the ultimate theme/ aims – mind map(s), a conclusion of the mind map(s) – the targeted theme, title, objectives; and scraps (collection of photos and artworks) related – scraps and sketches of using some visual elements such as line, shape and form, texture, colour,

space – scraps and sketches of using some design principles such as repetition, balance, emphasis,

contrast, unity – scraps and sketches of applying an art style/ the style of an artist/ a significant style of your

    own –

    ––

explanation for the choice of the targeted art genre; and scraps (collection of photos and artworks) of the art genre a brief summary of the evaluation given by others 2 drafts (or more) of final ideas and any scrap useful

  • Reminders:

    1. There should be at least 3 different art genres for all the 7 pieces of art work. 2. Do not choose the art genres that you have chosen for the Part One of the CE exams. 3. Bring all the paper work including mind maps, sketches and scraps……. of at least one

portfolio art work to the lessons of making the portfolio (mainly in Form 5). 4. Be diligent to make mind maps and sketches regularly at home. If you work on them a

lot at lesson time, your teacher may not be able to help you much and you may be punished as well. Do more practical and experimental work instead at lesson time.Make use of the tools and equipments of the Art Room. Take opportunities of consulting your Art Teacher during lessons and even on phone.

    5. Never produce the whole of a portfolio art work only at home. You should let your Art Teacher know what you are doing and let her see at least parts of it.

    6. Target at the marking criteria for gaining more marks. 7. In the portfolio books, visual form is more preferable than written form. You don’t

need to organize the stuff as well-organized as a project. An introduction or the pictures capturing the process of making the final product or a long summary is not necessary. More sketches and scraps are preferred. Each should concentrate in and be associated with a brief documentation.

    8. Documentation for each scarp/ sketch should not be only a description of what is there but an analysis of the ways of expression (in terms of art elements and design principles), an evaluation about any inspiration you can see from there, and a reflection for further development.

    9. Identify the ‘problems’ of each sketch and deduce for improvements. Sketches carrying out the improvements will be the ‘solutions’. Do not put the problems and solutions in a list of words.

    soft”

    prove your point.

    10. Technical problems such as “it is difficult to find the leather”, “the wires are too are not the problems we prefer most.

    11. Make the theme more detailed and in-depth. 12. When you deduce something and intend to illustrate, please collect others’ artwork to

    http:point.10

  • 13. A change of your main theme and a change of an art genre less than two months before the deadline are not encouraged.

    14. In your mind maps, highlight only the useful points. In those useful parts, there should be plenty of points and links.

    15. Evaluate the effectiveness of colour schemes by colouring the sketches not only bywriting.

    16. The scraps can be duplicated and shared by different pieces of work. 17. Do not copy exactly any image you collected. Modify it. 18. Don’t forget to do self or peer evaluation in order to give yourself directions for

improvements/ further development. 19. You may decide which piece of art work you do first and which one next. 20. In order to prepare the A4 sheets of the portfolio books, your preparation work

should not be larger than A4. And do not use both sides of a sheet. In future, youmay cut your preparation work and rearrange it.

    21. 4 pages is the official requirement. 6 pages is still acceptable. 8 pages may take a risk.

    22. Materials in the Art Room are for experiments only. Please don’t be limited by their types and formats. Prepare for the materials of your final artwork by your own.

    23. A picture may not be rectangular. 24. A rectangular backdrop is not necessary for a sculpture. 25. Please submit any bills within one month after purchase. You may claim for

reimbursement within a given lump sum. 26. The teacher will keep a photo of each latest artwork, and you will keep another photo.

Take the photos with a tripod and the timer of the camera. The original of any artwork smaller than A4 should be retained for direction submission; no photo is needed.

    27. The most updated version of the assessed portfolio books and artworks should be

retained until July in the year of Form 5.

    28. Do not forget to do reassessment if you have improved any work after the first assessment. You should make an appointment with Mrs. Kam for any reassessment.
