Teaching Online

Are you looking to provide effective online courses?

Teaching Online comprises six bite-sized online courses devised to help staff in higher education explore the differences between face-to-face and online teaching, the basics of online course pedagogy and develop the skills necessary to create compelling courses. The programme is suitable for everyone, ranging from an introductory course through to a dedicated course on choosing and using the right technology tools.

Ken had problems with his online course last semester: ”By the second week, I found myself in a jam with my job. I couldn’t

concentrate on studying, particularly for my first paper. I knew I had too many distractions going on and I guess I thought I could handle issues at work and still maintain my studying.”

Professor Jones received an email from Ken informing her of his situation: ”Ken recently asked for two more days to work on his first paper. I agreed to it because I knew he was desperate for more time and I felt he was telling me the right steps he would

take to catch up with the rest of the course.”

sigh.

. . . For his online course, he created audio recordings of all lectures and PowerPoint slides and uploaded them to

the learning management system/virtual learning environment. Peter also liked to ‘talk at the students’ in the online

discussion forums so that they clearly understood that he was the course content expert.
