    Teaching in Portugal 2005

Portugal is generally warm from April to October, though less so in the north, while the southernregion of Algarve can experience very hot temperatures in summer. During winter, the northreceives plenty of rain and temperatures fall alot. Portugal gets many hours of sunshine, butalso a lot of rainfall too!

Eating out is extremely cheap. Portions are large and the quality of food is generally good, although the choice somewhat limited with most restaurants serving Portuguese dishes only. However, there are also Chinese, and Italian and Indian restaurants. Eating at home can alsobe cheap although meat and cheese are about the same price as in England. Local wines areextremely cheap and very good, spirits are about half the price they are in the UK.

Americans with TEFL certification find Portugal to be the easiest Western European country, inwhich to find work as an English teacher. Most schools wont hire teachers without a certificateunless they have a lot of teaching experience. All EU citizens can work here with no problems.

The best bet is a contract with a fixed salary, but many schools also pay by the hour. It is also

common for schools to pay a '13th month' bonus to teachers who have worked over 12 months. All EU citizens are eligible for a residence permit for Portugal. This can be obtained relativelyeasily once the person has written confirmation of a job offer.Non-EU passport holders should have a job confirmed before they arrive in Portugal. UScitizens can also secure a work permit for Portugal, once they have a firm offer of employmentfrom a Portuguese-based school. But it can take about a year to be approved for a work permit.Pay is around from $800,00 - $1000,00 a month, it is one of the bext countries to work in if you

looking to save money. In Spain and Italyyour wages will range from 300 - 800.

There are many opportunities in Portugalfor fully qualified TEFL teachers, with theright visa. The general level of English

tuition in Portuguese State schools is veryhigh, with many students graduating withthe Cambridge First Certificate in English(FCE). There is a clear preference forBritish English, though teachers from otherEnglish-speaking countries are rarelyoverlooked. Private English schools arelocated all over this country, even in thesmaller towns.

If you have a PGCE (Britsh teachingcertifcate)you can find better paid jobs inthe international schools. You also willrecieve better teacher packages and longerwork contracts
