Teachers as Storytellers
For younger children, stories told or heard can help them understand the world in which they live, and allow them to transmit that understanding to others. Talk is a rehearsal for writing, and first hand situations experienced through drama and role-play approaches provide children with the ideas and language they need for writing. This one day course uses Shakespeare’s stories to enhance pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, cultural development and understanding of the world as a stimulus for developing their language skills By the end of the course participants will have:
developed their skills and confidence to lead practical approaches to literacy in the classroom.

The ability to reflect—Giving Children a Philosophical and Ethical Voice
Aim: This course aims to provide an active learning technique to support well rounded provision for PSHE and SMSC, to promote good mental health and underpin Fundamental British Values. Teachers will learn to facilitate their children in creating and holding philosophical discussions, linked to their broad and balanced curriculum or current issues which are of interest. The active learning technique ; “Call on Phil”, will refresh and build on Circle Time practice to broaden its provision into deeper, philosophical thinking and questioning. This can impact on pupils by enabling them with a stronger voice and a stronger sense of resilience, inclusion and ethics as well as challenging their higher order thinking skills and encouraging integrity, respect and confidence in their contributions By the end of the course participants will have:
practised and understood the principles of ‘Call on Phil’; discrete and occasional sessions to allow time for philosophy in KS2

Aim: To Provide an opportunity for subject leaders to keep up to date with current thinking about the development of PSHE nationally and in their setting
As a non-statutory subject schools have a lot of creative freedom in what they teach, and when. Such flexibility is important, but can leave staff feeling they are working alone, sometimes without investment in training and resources comparative to their colleagues leading on core statutory subjects. These network meetings are designed to redress that balance and give PSHE subject leads the opportunity to come together to discuss central themes in PSHE, share good practice and resources, question practice and policies and look at how to raise the status of PSHE across the curriculum.
By the end of the session participants will have:
reflected on current practice and national guidance and considered new or different pedagogical approaches and subject content in the teaching of PSHE
Dates, time, venue and cost: 17/11/16 28/02/17 13/06/17 9.00am -12.00pm HESTC B33 0AW £75 per delegate, per session Course Lead: Jo Perrin
