The ITRTs, under the leadership of Chris Corallo, the Director of

Technology, spent months studying, researching and reflecting on data

from numerous sources like the National Technology Education

Standards and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. We read excepts from

a book called The World is Flat.

Page 16: Teaching 21 st Century Skills HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration

The National Technology Education Standards state that to live, learn, and work successfully in an

increasingly complex and information-rich society, students must be able to use technology effectively

and become:

information technology users Information seekers Analyzers evaluators Problem solvers decision makers Communicators, Collaborators Publishers producers

Informed, responsible, and contributing citizens.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills

This group has established four key elements of 21st century learning:

– Placing an emphasis on learning 21st century technology skills

– Using 21st century tools – Teaching and learning in a 21st century

context – Using 21st century assessments

Aneesh ChopraSecretary of Technology

Governor Mark R. Warner, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia visited India from 23-29 April 2005. Governor Warner was in India, accompanied by a 65 member trade delegation, largest ever from the US to visit India.

On the occasion of his visit, CII organized a visit to the Hole in the Wall Project in Vivekananda Camp jhuggi on Saturday 23 April 2005.

Hole in the Wall Project

Free computers placed where children play could help bring basic education to India's 200 million boys and girls under age 15. That's the hope of the man behind an Internet learning experiment called Hole-in-the-Wall.

Page 21: Teaching 21 st Century Skills HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration

Sugata Mitra, physicist and chief scientist with India's international software giant NIIT Ltd., launched the experiment in 1999 by embedding a kiosk housing a high-speed touch-screen computer into the wall that separates the company's headquarters from New Delhi's biggest slum. Dr. Mitra was surprised to see how quickly the children mastered navigating the Internet - within hours.

Hole-in-the-Wall has already helped thousands of previously nonliterate boys and girls teach themselves not only about computers but also "several pieces of primary education," Mitra says. Within nine months, the boys and girls achieved, "the proficiency level equivalent to the skills of most modern office workers."

If the poorest areas of India are finding ways to incorporate technology into the

lives of their children, shouldn’t

we be doing the same?

Alcoa Richmond Foil PlantComputer Technology – It’s Everywhere

• Operators– Make decisions based upon the information presented– Comfortable with reading instructions– Data Entry– Process displays and PC Data Terminals

• Maintenance– Work orders– Order parts– Diagnose production computers with troubleshooting

equipment/computers– Maintenance Planning

• Engineers– Analyze data– Write programs to control equipment– Develop sophisticated models for decision making and/or control– Technical Writing

Page 26: Teaching 21 st Century Skills HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration

What did we learn at the Alcoa Richmond Foil Plant

Computer Technology – It’s EverywhereTechnology Skills for the future:

“It’s a Way-of-Life !”

• Basic User– Data entry– Word Processing, Spread Sheet, email– Decision making

• Systems Designer & Management– Database Skills– Network Access– Data Portability– Statistics/Engineering Software– Presentations/Graphics

Bottom Line--A few years ago computer skills were advanced skills, today they are foundational, tomorrow they will be as

important as Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic

Page 27: Teaching 21 st Century Skills HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration

If the entry level jobs at Alcoa

demand computer and problem solving skills,

shouldn’t we be teaching these

skills?

Because of the research we have studied and our August field trip, most important

part of my job is to help teachers:

• Make appropriate use of the available technology to differentiate instruction

• Use the available technology to provide authentic, interactive learning experiences .

• Create opportunities for students collaborate.

• Be confident and successful integrators of technology resources to support teaching and learning.

Page 29: Teaching 21 st Century Skills HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration HCPS TIP-C Chart Technology Integration

If we were going to help you do all of those things, we needed a road map so

Staff Development designed The Technology Integration Progression

Chart or TIP-C.
