Introduction

What is geography?

Geography teaches us about all the different countries and the people in this world.Through geography we can also learn about the weather which is also called ‘climate’,the rivers and the oceans, and mountains too.

Geography is also a science that studies the eath surfaces and people who study the earths surfacesare called geographers. They are interested in finding out more about mountains, deserts and the oceans. They study these physical features of earth so that they can learn more about the ways in which people can be affected by the natural world.

In short, geography is the science of the earths surface and all life living on it.

ContinentsWhat are continents?

Earth is a planet which we all live on. ‘We’ are all the people that live in all the different countries all over the world. The world is divided into seven big pieces of land and each of these pieces of land is known as acontinent. Each content has a different name; Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, SouthAmerica and Antarctica. Each continent is different in size and some continents are a lot colder than others.

Look at the map of the world below. As you can see each continent is in a different colour and they are all different in sizes. Write in the boxes the name of the continent and then see if you can answer the questions below, write down your answers on the dotted lines. Use an atlas or globe to help.

Capital CitiesWhat is a capital city?

A capital city is sometimes the main, or biggest city in a country and , usually, the country’s goverment or leaders are based there. Each country has a capital city and it is where governments make many important decisions to do with how the country should be run and making laws to keep us safe.

The UK is short for the United Kingdom and this is where we live. The UK is made up of four different countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We live in England and London is the capital city of England.

Other capital cities in the UK are Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland; Cardiff, the capital city of Wales and Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland.

These cities are just in the UK. All over the world, other countries have their own capital cities. Some countries have more than one capital city and some countries don’t have a capital city at all!

Can you find out the name of the capital city of the countries listed below? Using an atlas map or a globe, write down the capital city belonging to each country in the box next to it. Some are easy and you may know or have heard of them, but some are tricky ...good luck!

Seasons

What are seasons?

Lets begin with the Sun. As the Earth moves around the Sun it spins. As it spins it tilts slightly and the tilting causes seasons. At different times of the year, different parts of our planet Earth are either closer toor further away from the Sun’s light.

How many seasons are there?

In the United Kingdom there are four seasons • Winter • Spring • Summer • Autumn

So, why is it hot in summer and cold in winter?

We know that the Earth moves around the Sun and as it spins it tilts slightly. Well, during the Summer months the Sun’s rays hit the Earth at a steep angle. This means that the light does not spread out as much and increases the amount of energy in one spot.

During the winter months the Sun’s rays hit the Earth at a shallow angle and these rays are more spread out so that instead of producing a lot of energy (or heat) in one spot, it spreads out more and thereforemakes it cooler.

Use a torch and a globe, dim the lights and seehow light and heat affects the Earth.

Its not just the angle of the Sun’s rays hitting the Earth that determines whether it is hotter or not.During the Summer months the days are longer and allows the Earth to enjoy warmer temperatures. In the winter the days are shorter and the nights are long and this prevents our part of the Earth fromwarming up!

A bit of fun... Help Old Bob find one object that you would find in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Draw a circle around the object for each season.

Go on your ownamazing adventureWrite a quick travel journal...

Based on Amy Johnson’s epic flight across the world, go on your own adventure acrosscountries and continents.

Choose a capital city you would like to start from and which continents you would liketo travel through. Plot your route using an atlas or globe. Choose your means of transport. You could go by plane, boat, train, car or all of them!

Use the Travel Journal sheet to document your journey. It’s a nice summer month trip, starting in March.Your trip will take you to a new place where you will stay for each month. Find out a little bit about each placeyou visit and write in the journal. For example, say if the places you visited had good or bad weather, were too hot or cold, write about what you did there and what interesting things did you see along the way.

The following may help to give you an idea of where to start and listed below are some continents andexamples of the countries with famous landmarks that you could visit but you can start anywhere and goanywhere!

• My amazing journey began in....
