Clowning around

Summary – Drama – Grades 1 – 2 or 7 - 10 Through play building, students will be expected to develop a range of performance techniques suited to their interests and abilities. The work on the creation of character which develops from improvisation will be linked to play building and, where appropriate, to performance.

Character Mind Map Summary – English – Grades 3 – 6 or 7 – 10

In this lesson, students create a profile of a character from a novel they are studying in class. All profiles are linked to a mind map that shows the relationship between each of the characters in the text thus creating an interactive PowerPoint presentation.

Exhibiting Art

Summary – Creative Arts – Grades 3 – 6 and 7 – 10 In this activity, students are going to create a brochure for an art gallery combining research and images pertaining to known art works such as Van Gogh – Self Portrait; and students own art pieces.

Guilty or Not Guilty Summary – English, Debating – Grades 5 – 10

In this project, students will participate in an online court case. Students assume the roles of those members of the judicial system, using email to present their case. Using the voting features in Microsoft Outlook, students have their say in determining a verdict.

International Hide and Seek

Summary – Geography – Grades 5 – 10 In this game of Word Wide Tag, students work in pairs. One student ‘hides’ somewhere in the world and sends their partner email letters full of clues as to their whereabouts. Once they’re location is discovered, its TAG! And the roles swap. Students must hide in at least one city from each continent.

Its no Joke to Smoke

Summary – Personal Development – Grades 5 – 8 In this lesson, students will learn about the effects of smoking and the diseases of the body that are caused through smoking. Students will use Microsoft PowerPoint to organise and present research gathered concerning the effects of smoking in an interactive presentation.

Labelling with LOTE

In this activity, students complete a worksheet that requires them to label an object using nouns from a given word bank. A formula has been inserted into the work sheet which registers each answer given as either correct or incorrect. For this example, we are using the language of French. You may use this lesson with any language study you choose.

Vivaldi Seasons

Summary – Science and Technology – Grades 1 - 2 In this activity, students save images that illustrate each of the four seasons from the web. These images are then combined with Vivaldi’s classical musical suite ‘Four Seasons’ to create a music clip using Microsoft Photo Story 3.

Summary – Science & Technology – Grades 3 - 6 In this lesson you will use Microsoft Excel to calculate how much water their family uses on a typical Sunday. In this lesson students will design and create a virtual Aquarium demonstrating knowledge of ocean life and ways in which they interact with each other and their environment.

What’s that called

Summary – Grades 3 - 6 - English In this activity, students create a worksheet that requires their peers to label an object using nouns from a given word bank. Weather Watching

Summary – Grades 3 - 4 – Math and Science

In this activity, students use the internet to monitor the weather conditions of a chosen city for one week. Data is recorded in an excel spreadsheet and used to generate a graph illustrating the results. This graph is then imported into Microsoft PowerPoint and used in the creation of a mock weather report.

In this lesson students create a cartoon by importing images and sound files and apply movement through the use of custom animation features.

Butterfly Life Cycle

Summary – Science & Technology – Grades 2 - 4

In this lesson students will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a butterfly life cycle diagram. The lesson will begin with class discussion and what a life cycle is and the different stages of the butterfly life cycle. Students will then draw the four different stages of the butterfly life cycle i.e. egg, larva, pupa & adult. They will then draw a life cycle diagram in Microsoft PowerPoint and incorporate their drawings in this diagram.

Marvellous Milk

Summary – Science & Technology – Grades 1 - 3 In this lesson students will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a diagram that shows the process of how milk gets to our fridge. The lesson will begin with class discussion on milk and where it comes from. Students will then draw pictures to show the process of how milk gets to our fridge. They will then draw a diagram with text and pictures to further explain this process.

Year 6 Farewell

Summary – English, Technology – Yr 6 Learn how to create a farewell video file that will be remembered long after the streamers are cleaned up and the DJ has gone home. Using still images and text, you can create a video file complete with music and narration using Microsoft Photo Story.

What I should have done in the holidays Summary – English – Grades Yr 2 - 6 Students always write a recount of what they did in their holidays. Here is a way to make their recount dynamic and more meaningful. Using Photo Story 3, students narrate their recounts making their everyday recount come to life in visual and audio multimedia.

Story Map

Summary – English – Grades 3 - 6 In this lesson, students create a hyperlinked outline of the plot from a novel they are currently studying. In our sample, we have used the text Harry Potter though this novel can be interchanged for with any narrative.

Curious George

Summary – English – Grades K-3

In this lesson students will explore the character Curious George. Students extend what they have learned by imagining what George would do if he visited their school. After drawing pictures (extension activity - taking pictures with digital camera) of a toy monkey in a variety of poses and locations around their school, they will then work together to create a storyboard and then a digital “book” in Microsoft Movie Maker that tells their story.

In this lesson students will use a well known storybook to explore letter writing as a genre. Students will explore the letters that are delivered by The Jolly Postman. Students will then learn how to create their own letter using Microsoft Publisher

In this lesson students will use a well known storybook to create their own catalog of products. Students will explore catalogs from well know stores. Students will then learn how to create their own catalog using Microsoft Publisher.

Jolly Postman - Sequencing Summary – English – Grades 3 - 6

In this lesson students will recreate the sequence of events in the story ‘The Jolly Postman’. The lesson will begin with students listening to the story ‘The Jolly Postman’ and then discussing the events in the correct order. After sequencing the events (in order) as a whole class activity students will use this model to construct a diagram of events in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Jolly Postman – Creating a Postcard Summary – English – Grades 3 - 6

In this lesson students will use a well known storybook to explore postcard writing as a genre. Students will read and examine the postcard that was delivered by the Jolly Postman to the Giant. Students will then learn how to create their own postcard using Microsoft Publisher.

In this activity students will choose passage options from predefined options. This lesson can easily be changed to a different category/content to suit your lesson objectives. We are going to focus on the text type explanation in the English key learning area.

Where did that word come from? Summary – English - Grades 3 - 6

In this lesson students explore word origin – etymology. Using a novel being studied in class as the source of words, students and teacher locate unfamiliar words to study. These words and their meanings are then compiled in a hyperlinked personalised diary created in a Word document.

Harry Potter – Lesson Project

Summary – English – Grades 5 - 10 In this project, students create an information kiosk exploring a variety of aspects of a chosen novel. This lesson project contains seven (7) individual lesson plans which culminate into a final project. Summary – PDHPE – Grades 3 - 6 In this lesson students will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a food pyramid information kiosk that teaches the five food groups. The lesson will begin with class discussion on food, food choices and how we can categorise food. Students will then draw a food pyramid in Microsoft PowerPoint.

In this activity, students create an interactive ‘choose your own adventure’ genre slide show using Microsoft PowerPoint. The reader selects the direction of the narrative from two possible hyperlinked choices. Sound files are recorded and imported to accompany the story.

In this lesson students will create their own ‘Snakes and Ladders’ board game using Microsoft Word. Students will also use an internet browser to access an online dice.

Terrific Times Tables

Summary – Maths – Grades 3 - 6

In this lesson students will create a ‘Times Tables’ mathematics resource that can be used for learning and practising your times tables. This resource will be created in Microsoft Excel and will give the student/s immediate feedback as it will correct each answer upon completion.

Fun with French Words

Summary – LOTE – Grades 3-6

In this lesson students will use Microsoft Word to create a ‘French words’ sorting activity that teaches common words in the home in French. The lesson will begin with class discussion on what things we find in the household bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. These will be written in English and translated in French. Students will then construct and complete an activity in Microsoft Word that helps teach common household words in French.

Learning about Local History

Summary – HSIE – Grades 3-6 In this lesson students will create a slide show of their local area using Google Picasa. Prior to the lesson students will research and take photographs of significant places/buildings etc in their local area. They will then use Picasa to arrange these photos into a slide show to present to the class. Students will then be asked to compare their findings with that of another student.

Half the Flush Summary – HSIE – Grades 5-6

Students will research reasons for having dual flush toilet systems installed in schools as a means to saving water. Information gathered by means of this electronic questionnaire will be sent to the school community including students, staff and board for consideration of this project being implemented in the schools. Further application could be made by sending a report of the project to local Council for consideration.

Interactive Keyboard

Summary – Music – Grades 5-6

In this activity, students will build a replica of a piano keyboard and attach a sound file for each key. Students may then use this interactive keyboard to compose simple melodies.

Christmas Traditions Summary – Social Studies - Grades 3-4 In this activity, students create an information kiosk where they must research the Christmas traditions of various countries (can use the same concept for other traditions).

Endangered Animals

Summary – Social Studies - Grades 5-6 In this activity, students choose an endangered animal to research. Gathering images and information from the World Wide Web, students create video file of their chosen animal using Microsoft Photo Story. Students synchronise their video file with an information report created in Microsoft PowerPoint using Microsoft Producer to create a multimedia presentation.

Stereo Typing

Summary – Personal Development – Grades 5-6 In this activity, students investigate how stereotypes are used in advertising. Students then create their own advertisement in Photo Story demonstrating how stereotypes are used to promote a product or concept.

Graphing Dinosaurs

Summary – Science – Grades 5-6

In this activity, students research the weight, height and length of a chosen dinosaur. Data is recorded into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and graphed. Students compare the weight, height and length of dinosaurs and formulate hypothesis to explain similarities and differences between the dinosaurs.

In this lesson students are assisted by the teacher in creating a Microsoft PowerPoint slide show which outlines their favourite places and activities at school.

Summary – Studies of Society– Grades 5 – 6 In this lesson students research and present information on a key Australian historical figure. All presentations are then linked via an interactive information kiosk using Microsoft® PowerPoint.

How Far can you Go

Summary – Mathematics– Grades 4 – 6 Students design and create a template for a paper aeroplane using Microsoft Word. Students then print, fold and fly their aeroplanes recording the distance achieved in an Excel spreadsheet. This data is then illustrated as a graph.

In this lesson students will create a pictograph (a graph with pictures). Students will first survey their friends, family or staff members on a particular topic i.e. favourite holiday destinations. They will then use this data to create their pictograph.

In this activity, students choose a National Park to research and create a virtual postcard using Microsoft Photo Story. Students synchronise their virtual postcard with a PowerPoint presentation detailing the geographical information pertaining to the National Park using Microsoft Producer.

Summary – Studies of Society– Grades 5 – 6 In this lesson students will create an interactive PowerPoint presentation depicting life in the goldfields of Australia.

Nursery Rhyme Detectives

Summary – English– Grades 2 – 4

In this activity, students collectively brainstorm a list of nursery rhyme characters such as Goldilocks, Little Boy Blue and Jack and Jill. A mind map of these characters is recorded using Microsoft Word or Visio. Each student is then allocated a character from the mind map which becomes their ‘secret identity’.

Smarty Pants Summary – Mathematics – Grades 3 – 4

In this activity, students graph the color distribution found in a packet of Skittle lollies, M&M’s, Smarties or similar sweets. Results are compared and recorded against the results of other class members.

Summary – English – Literacy Study – Grades 7 - 9 In this lesson students demonstrate an understanding of plot by creating an interactive story map using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Waltzing Matilda

Summary – English – Grades 7-10 In this activity, students are asked to analyse the meaning behind a well known song or quote. Students create a visual audio story using Microsoft Photo Story and synchronise it with a PowerPoint presentation detailing the song lyrics along with their own interpretation.

Courage, Mateship, Endurance, Sacrifice Summary – English – Grades 9-10

Students will consider the qualities of soldiers at war, as exemplified by the deeds of the ‘diggers’ at Isavura, and then consider how these same qualities have been exemplified by their opponents.

Designing a Resume Summary – English – Grades 7-12

‘A life’s worth of experience and education summarised in a few pages – that’s a resume’. In this lesson students will write and design their own resume to secure a job. Students will create their resume using Microsoft Publisher.

Summary – English – Grades 6 - 8

This activity challenges students to think about anagrams. This task can be used with your chosen novel in which the student can demonstrate understanding of the text and predict outcomes through inventiveness.

Summary – English, Design and Technology – Grades 7 – 10 In this activity, students demonstrate a sequence of events through the creation of an animated flowchart. In our example we have used the mechanics of a car to demonstrate the process.

To Be or Not To Be Summary – English – Grades 9 – 10

Students learn about the life of the bard, William Shakespeare, presenting information in an interactive multimedia kiosk using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Bilbo’s Heroic Journey

Summary – English – Grades 7-8 Students will examine the adventures of Bilbo in light of Joseph Campbell’s concepts of heroic journey, identifying the various stages of Bilbo’s rite of passage on an interactive map of Middle Earth. And to follow on from this they will compose their own account of the heroic journey.

Food for Life

Summary – English – Grades 7-10 In this activity, students use Microsoft Photo Story to create a video about their lifestyle group. Then, using Microsoft Publisher students design their own fast food menu based on the Dietary Guidelines of their specific lifestyle group.

Online Book Review Summary – English – Grades 7-10

In this activity, students use Microsoft FrontPage to create a visual representation of a chosen text. They will compose a video using Microsoft Photo Story and then will put together a website on their chosen book review and include images, audio and video files sourced from various locations.

Summary –English – Grades 9-10

Students will compare and contrast concepts of ‘freedom’ in differing texts and contexts, and then produce their own work on an issue relating to their understanding of ‘freedom’.

The Crucible – A Comparison

Dream Home

Summary – Design and Technology – Grades 7-8

In this activity, students use the drawing tools in Microsoft Visio, students design their dream home. Students then import this Visio graphic into Microsoft Publisher to create a For Sale brochure of their dream home.

Baa Baa Black Sheep

Summary – Design and Technology – Grades 7 – 10

In this activity, students create a flowchart of the production of a good or service, for example, ‘The Production of Wool’. The flowchart is hyperlinked to information slides which provide detailed information pertaining to each sequence of the production method.

Backyard Blitz

Summary – Design and Technology, Agriculture – Grades 7 – 10

In this activity, students create a landscape design using shapes, colours and textures. A key is created with hyperlinks to information reports pertaining to the plants, trees and shrubs used in the design.

Coz I’m Free Summary –Social Studies – Grades 7-8 Students will examine notions of ‘identity’ as embodied in the life and actions of Cathy Freeman and write a newspaper article using Microsoft Publisher.

The Food Chain

Summary – Science – Grades 7-10 In this activity, students must move animals within a specific food chain into the correct position in the chain. Using Microsoft Word students can drag and drop each animal into position to show a chain structure. This lesson would be very suitable for those classrooms using an interactive whiteboard.

Measuring Plants

Summary – Science – Grades 7-10 In this lesson students will study how plants growth is affected by sun light and position. Students will position several plants in different parts of the classroom and study their progress over 3-4 weeks. Students will then analyse the results to identify optimum growth methods.

Process Time

Summary – Science – Grades 7-8

In this exercise students are asked to create a video documenting their current class exercise. This lesson shows students documenting the process of evaporation in a science classroom. Students must document the process and then create a video outlining the process.

Prehistoric Timeline Summary – Science – Grades 7-8

In this activity, students give detailed explanations of how scientific revelations of prehistoric life have changed peoples understanding of the world. Students create a prehistoric timeline linking images of dinosaurs to relevant word documents and web sites.
