• Not for profit organization
• Founded in 1996 by a group of volunteer parents
• Goal is to provide individuals with autism the opportunity to socialize and grow
• President- Donna Lorman
• Members meet monthly in social settings (restaurants, bowling ally, etc.)
• Four different groups:
- Students with Aspergers
- Pre school students
- Elementary school students
- Teens (13-20)

* None of us had any prior experience working with students with autism
•Contacted President of ASGO-Donna Lorman
• Decided to work with ASGO’s teen group
• Set up plans to throw a St. Patrick's Day party on Thursday March 18, 2010
• Location: Uno’s Pizzeria on International Drive
•Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder which affects
social and communication skills
• broad diagnosis - can include people with high IQs and mental
retardation
• More prevalent in males
• Autism is now diagnosed in 1 out of 150 American children
• No known cause

OHigher ability teens played BINGO
•ASGO teens:
• 13-20 Chronological age
• 6-10 Developmental age
• 20 participants
- 2 girls
- 18 boys
** Today there are approximately 1,500 individuals with some sort of autism in
Central Florida. Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no
racial, ethnic, or social boundaries
Personally
• Very rewarding experience to interact with the teens- all very lovable
• Repeatedly thanked by parents and teens- “made the night special and
memorable”.
• Witnessed what a broad diagnosis Autism really is
• Felt inspired by the dedication and support of the parents of the teens as
well as the ASGO organization
Academic/Professionally
• First hand experience working with students with autism
• Gained teacher perspective through interacting with teens
• Conversed and obtained knowledge from parents of teens
• Implemented various strategies for teaching and interacting
with students with autism
• Practiced being flexible with a set schedule
• Established contact with a society that could benefit future
students that we teach
