The Written Assignment is 20% of the final grade in both English B Standard Level and Higher Level.
Standard Level
At Standard Level, the Written Assignment is based on an inter-textual reading. Students choose a minimum of three and maximum of four texts related to a theme from the Core subjects.
The assignment is to produce a piece of well-organized writing in a chosen text type. The rationale should be between 150 and 200 words, followed by a written task of between 300 and 400 words.
Higher Level
At Higher Level, students are required to produce a creative piece of writing based on one or two of the literary texts studied. The rationale should be between 150 and 250 words and the text between 500 and 600 words.
General information
Students may use dictionaries and reference works. The assignment is not timed.
Teachers should assist the students in understanding the requirements of the task and the assessment criteria.
Students must be made aware of the fact that the work must be their own, original writing.
The teacher can advise on the choice of topic and give oral, but not written, comments on the first draft.
The teacher must also confirm that the work is the student’s own work.
