UNIT 1 – LESSON 1 – WELCOME

PRESENTATION

A. GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER (10 minutes)

1. Have the kids sit in a circle with you.Introduce yourself to the kids.

2. Call students’ names and ask them to raise their hands.

3. Have the kids stand up in a circle. Paly the VIDEO 1 of the HELLO SONG. The kidsclap hands and do some simple movements during the song with the teacher.

B. LISTEN AND SING. MOVE (pages 4-5)

B.1. Introducing The Island

Introducing the island: (7 minutes)

Let the kids sit in a circle again. Display the My Little Island poster. (or show the picture of the island on the screen.)

Introduce the Island to the kids. Teacher says ISLAND a few times. Identify different places on the map, such as the beach, the school, the zoo. Invite the

kids to talk about the poster. (Teacher can make questions about the island). Ask the kids to name the places they’d like to visit on the island. Play the Welcome song in Video in CD-Rom

B.2. Working in the book (pages 4-5)

o Introducing Kimmy, Timmy & Sammy (10 minutes) Show the picture on page 4 on the screen. Explain that the boy and the girl in the hot balloon live on the island. Tell the kids

that their names are Timmy and Kimmy and that they are saying Hello. Model saying hello, waving, and opening arms wide as a welcoming gesture. Do this gesture of welcoming a few more times and say hello to the kids. Ask if the kids can see an animal. Point to and introduce Sammy the Squirrel. Point to the boy, the girl and the Squirrel and say their names a few more time. Keep

the order of Timmy, Kimmy, Sammy. Use puppet to present the introducing: Hello. I’m Timmy/Kimmy/Sammy the

Squirrel. Do this a few times. Ask the kids to open their books to page 4. Ask them to point to Timmy/Kimmy&

Sammy. Have them say the names a few times. (optional)

o Listen and sing. Move. (8 minutes) Play the song “ I see you!” Have the kids look at the scene as they listen. Demonstrate the TPR actions that go with the song.

B.3. Consolidating

1. Make stick puppets (15 minutes) Prepare materials for this activities. Prepare enough copies of pictures of Timmy for

boys and Kimmy for girls. Use handout 1&2 in Coloring Books. Let students color their own pictures and help them to complete the puppets with a

ready-made sticks. Call names of Kimmy or Timmy so that the kids will show their puppets accordingly. Ask them to show their puppets and say: Hello. I’m Timmy/Sammy. Invite pairs to practice the conversation. Hello. I’m Kimmy. Hello, I’m Timmy.

UNIT 1 – LESSON 2 – STORY (pages 6-7)

A. INTRODUCING THE STORY (10 minutes) Have the kids sit in a circle. Play the hello song as in lesson 1. Show the picture on page 4 and ask the kids to identify Timmy, Kimmy& Sammy. Repeat the names a few more times. Tell the kids that today is the first day Timmy &Kimmy are going to school. Ask the

kids:- Who will take Tiimmy&Kimmy to school? (Answer: mother/father)- Who will they see at school. (Answer: Teacher and friends).

Show the kids picture 1 on page 6. Ask them to identify people in the picture: Timmy and his Mom; Kimmy. Help the kids understand what is happening in picture 1. (Timmy’s mother is

dropping him of at school. Kimm and Timmy wave to each other). Continue to show picture 2 on page 6. Point to Timmy &Kimmy and encourage the

kids say the names with you. Point to Kimmy and talk about Kimmy’s feeling. Make gesture to show that Kimmy’s

happy. Point to Timmy and ask the kids about Timmy’s feeling. Make gesture to show that

Timmy’s nervous. Again, get back to each picture while telling the story of Timmy &Kimmy’s first day

at school.

B. WORKING IN THE BOOK (25 minutes)B.1. Look and listen.

Ask students to sit and look at the screen. Show only picture 1 of the story. Ask students to listen to Kimmy& Timmy greeting each other. Say look and listen. Play only the first 2 lines:

- Kimmy: Hello.- Timmy: Hi

Play the recording of the lines a few more times. Encourage the kids to speak along. Continue with picture 2: Show picture 2 and play the recording for the next line:

- Kimmy: I’m Kimmy. Continue with picture 3: Show picture 3 and play the recording for the next line:

- Timmy: I’m Timmy. Play the recording of the lines from the beginning a few more times. Encourage the

kids to speak along. Show picture 4. Explain that Timmy’s Mom is going home and that Timmy and his

Mom are saying good-bye. Play the recording for the last 2 lines of the conversation.

- Mom: Good0bye.- Timmy: Bye.

Play the recording of the lines from the beginning a few more times. Encourage the kids to speak along.

B.2: Act it out

Show the picture one by one again. When showing a picture, say the lines of conversation of the picture. Encourage students to say along.

Show all the 4 pictures. Invite some kids to the screen. Play the recording of each picture again and ask them to point to the correct one.

Ask the kids to open their books. Listen and point and say the lines of the conversation.

Invite volunteers to act out the story using the puppets of Kimmy& Timmy when the teacher plays the audio again.

B.3: TEACHING NEW LANGUAGE

1. Hi/ Hello Use puppets of Kimmy and Timmy to perform the greeting of Hi/Hello. Do this

several times. Explain to students that this is used to greet people when we see them. Walk around the room and say Hello/Hi to different kids, encourage them to respond

with Hi/Hello too. Notes: Teacher should use the kid’s name when greeting him/her. Invite a few kids to go around the room and greet their friends. Allow them to use

puppets for the greeting.

2. Introducing yourself: I’m (Kimmy/Timmy). Show the picture in which Kimmy& Timmy introduce themselves. Play the recording

again. Use puppets of Kimmy& Timmy to perform the conversation again.

- Hi. I’m Timmy.- Hello. I’m Timmy.

Introduce yourself to the kids. Say Hi. I’m (Nina). Go around the room and introduce yourself to the kids. Encourage them to introduce themselves back to you.

Let the kids introduce himself/herself to other kids.

3. Good-bye Again show picture 4 on page 7 and play the recording where Timmy’s mother

saying goodbye to him. Pretend to enter the room and wave/say Hello. Then pretend to leave the room and

wave and say Good-bye/bye. Do this several times. Invite a few volunteers to do this.

C. CONSOLIDATION (10 minutes)1. Passing The Ball game

Have the kids sit in a circle Hold an item such as a ball and say: Hello. I’m (Dao). Ask the kids to wave and

respond. Hi, Ms.Dao. Throw/hand the ball to another kid. This one will say Hi, I’m (Lucy). Ask the class to

wave and respond: Hi, Lucy. Let each child have a turn.

2. Coloring Have the kids color pictures on page 4 & 5-WB.

D. HOMEWORK Ask the kids to do exercise 2, workbook page 6

UNIT 1 – LESSON 3 – ACTIONS (pages 8-9)

A. REVIEWING OLD LESSON (10 minutes) Have the kids stand in a circle and play the song “ I can see you.”. Have them do movement

during the song. Say hello/hi to the kids and encourage them to reply. Invite each kid to come in front and use puppets to greet to the class.

B. NEW LESSON (55 minutes)1. Introducing classroom Instructions: Look, speak, listen

1.1. Introducing the Words: (15 minutes)

Before starting the lesson, introduce the situation in which the kids in the pictures are going to learn to say new things in English in class.

LOOK Have the kids stand in front of you. Make sure all of them can see you. In order to introduce the language, you should play the roles of Sammy and teacher (yourself).

Change your voice for the roles. Have Sammy say: Teacher, look! Shade your eyes with your hand and search around the

classroom. Repeat the word look while you do this. Cue the class to copy you. Do this several times.

SPEAK

Have Sammy say: Teacher, speak! Answer him: Speak? Okay. Then say funny, nonsense things to get the kids laughing. Gesture to the class and say: Children, speak. Cue them to begin talking.

Do this several times. Repeat the actions for look & speak a few more times in the same order.

LISTEN

Have Sammy say: Teacher, listen! Cup your hand by your ear as though you are listening. Say Listen. Cue the kids do the same.

Repeat saying the words and actions of Look, Speak & Listen a few more times. Cue the kids to do and to say with you.

1.2. Listen and Trace (5 Minutes)

Have the kids sit down and ask them to open book to page 8. Say: Listen and trace. Hold up the Student book so the kids can see. Demonstrate tracing the frame of each box with your finger to make sure they

know what to do. Say the words of Look, Speak & Listen in order. Ask the kids to point to each

picture and trace it as they hear the word that name it. Say the word again one after one and have the kids repeat each word.

1.3. GAMES : Throw the ball to the correct picture (10 minutes) Materials:

- Flash cards of Look/Speak & Listen- 2 balls with different colors- A small rope to make line

Procedure:- Divide the class into 2 teams and have them stand facing the board.- Tick the 3 pictures of Look, Speak & Listen on the board.- Put the rope to make a line about 1metter away from the board.- Put 2 balls of different colors at the line. Assign each ball for each team.- Say a word. 1 kid from each team will run to the line, pick up the ball of the

team and throw it to the picture. - The first kid with ball touching the correct picture will be the winner.

2. Introducing Classroom Instructions: Sing, draw, color 2.1. Introducing the words (10 minutes)SING

Have Sammy say: Teacher, sing! Sing the sing (in a funny way) while you mimic the gesture of the girl on page 9. Cue the class to copy you and sing the word sing.

Do this a few times.

DRAW Have Sammy say: Teacher, draw! Say: Draw! And pretend to hold a pencil and

draw a big circle. Say: Children, draw. Cue them to copy your action while they say draw.

Say: Children, sing (you sing). Then draw (you draw). Make sure the kids repeat and copy your actions.

COLOR

Have Sammy say: Teacher, color! Pretend to color. Say color while you do this. Cue children to do the same.

Confirm that the kids understand the actions by demonstrating them and having the kids repeat each word and action.

2.2. Listen and Trace (5 Minutes)

Have the kids sit down and ask them to open book to page 9. Say: Listen and trace. Hold up the Student book so the kids can see. Demonstrate tracing the frame of each box with your finger to make sure they

know what to do. Say the words of sing, draw & colorin order. Ask the kids to point to each picture

and trace it as they hear the word that name it. Say the word again one after one and have the kids repeat each word. Repeat the listen and trace for Look, Speak & Listen

2.3. GAME: TOSS THE BAG (10 minutes) Materials:

o 2 small bean bags.o Flash cards of sing, draw, color, look, speak & listeno A small rope to make line

Procedure:o Put the pictures of sing, draw, color, look, listen & speak on the floor above the

line.o The kids line up in 2 teams behind the line.o Team one will do first. The kids take turn to throw the bean bag onto the

cards. When the bag successfully lands on a card, the kid will perform the action and say the word. If the kid is correct, he/she will take the picture.

o The winning team is the one with more pictures at the end.

C. CONSOLIDATION: GAME: THE MISSING ACTION (10 minutes) Materials:

o Flash cards of sing, draw, color, look, speak & listen Procedure

o Invite 6 volunteers to the front. Assign each one a picture.o Ask each child say and act the word of his/her picture.o Ask the other students as the audience put their heads down so that they can’t

see.o Have one volunteer hide away somewhere in the room.o Have the audience look up and look again at the volunteers doing the actions,

one at a time. o Ask the audience to tell you which action is missing.o Repeat for a few rounds.

A. REVIEW HELLO/HI, I’m……

1. Let’s Sing The Hello Song (A3) (5 minutes)

o Let the kids listen to & sing the “I see you” song and dance with them’

2. CONVERSATION: Hi, I’m Timmy. (7 minutes)

- Show pictures of Timmy &Kimmy on screen and ask the kids who they are.- Use puppets to present the conversation between Timmy &Kimmy at the

first day at school again.- Go around and greet the kids one after one and introduce your name.

Encourage them to greet you back and introduce their names too.

3. GAME: Hot potato (8 minutes) Material: a bean bag, a ball or a stuffed animal as a “hot potato” Procedure:

o Have the kids sit in a circle.o Have them pass the “hot potato” around while music is playing.o Suddenly stop the music. When the music stops, the kid left holding

the “hot potato” has to greet and introduce him/herself to the class.

4. COLORING: (10 minutes) Give the kids Coloring handout 3. Let them color the pictures.

B. REVIEW ACTIONS: Look, speak, listen, sing, draw & color

1. Review the words Look, speak, listen (15 minutes) Have the kids sit in front of you. Put the flash cards of look, speak, listen, sing, draw and color one after one on

the floor and say the words in the above order. Say the words in that order again and do the action for each word. Cue the kids

to watch and do the actions too. (do this a few times) Now you say the words and ask the kids to mime and repeat the words. (do this

a few times) Ask the kids to close their eyes, take out one card. Have them open their eyes

and ask them to say what card is missing. (Do this a few times with different cards).

2. Review the words look, speak, listen, sing, draw & color (10 minutes)

Put cards of look, speak & listen away. Repeat the above steps with sing, draw & color After that, put the cards of the 6 actions on the floor one by one. Each time

encourage the kids to say the word of each card with you. Again do the missing card game with all 6 cards.

3. Game: Touch the cards (10 minutes) Materials:

o A set of cards includinglook, speak, listen, sing, draw, color Procedure

o Put the cards on the floor and spread them out.o Divide the class into 2 teams.o Call out a word. 2 kids from 2 teams race to touch the correct

card.o The first kid to touch the card gets to keep it.o The team with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

B.1. Introducing dance, jump, walk (15 minutes)

DANCE

Have the kids sit down and look at the screen. Show picture of Kimmy& Timmy dancing on page 10. Ask the kids what Timmy &Kimmy are doing and have them say dance. Ask

them to dance as Timmy &Kimmy do. Play a free clip song and have the kids dance with you.

JUMP

Show picture of jump and ask the kids do the action as in the picture while listening to you say jump.

Hold the flash cards of dance & jump. Say and ask the kids do the actions with you. Encourage them to say the words while acting.

WALK

Show picture of walk and similarly ask the kids do the action of walking. Ask the kids walk around the room in circle while you keep saying the word. Stop the kids. Hold the flash card of walk and say the word. Have the kids

repeat. Then again ask the kids walk around with you while saying the word together.

REVIEW

Have the kids sit down with you. Show flash cards of dance, jump & walk one by one. Say the words when you show

them and put the cards on the floor. Again slowly point to the each card and say the word. Have the kids repeat after you. Have the kids stand up with you. Say and act and ask them to do the same. Say the words again in the same order and ask the kids to act. Say the words in different order and ask the kids to act and say the words too.

B2: Game: Action Race (8 minutes)

Materials:o 2 chairso Flash cards of dance, jump & walk.

Procedure:o Have the kids split into two teams and stand in lines at one end at the back of

the classroom.o Put one chair between 2 teams and another chair at the other end of the room

by the board. Put flashcards on this chair.o One child from each team stands next to the chair and Teacher calls an action,

e.g. "Jump".o Students must jump to the chair on the other side of the room and get the

correct card. Jump back and sit down in their chair. First one to do it gets their team a point.

Note: This game can be done a few rounds so that all children have chance to play.

C. TEACHING SIT DOWN, STAND UP, HANDS UP, HANDS DOWN (P.11)

SIT DOWN& STAND UP (8 minutes)

Show pictures of sit down & stand up on the screen. Ask students to do the actions as they see in the pictures. While the kids are doing, you say the words and do the actions too. Ask the

kids to follow you.It’s better you say the words in some certain funny rhythm. Now you just say the words without doing the actions. Let the kids listen and

do the actions. In this step, keep saying the words in the order of sit down first, stand up later.

Have the kids stand in 2 teams opposite each other. Make gesture to let team one sit down and ask team 2 to say the word. Then continue with stand up.

Do the same things with team 2. Now let the kids do and say in whole group. You make gestures and ask them

to do the actions while saying the words. In this step, you can say the words in different order.

HANDS UP, HANDS DOWN (7 minutes)

Do similar steps above to introduce hands up, hands down

card. The faster is the winner and gains one point for his/her team.

Use puppets of Sammy, go around and say Hi/Hello to the kids. Encourage them to wave and say Hi/Hello back.

Have the kids stand in circle. Play the song and dance with them. Encourage the kids sing the word Hello loudly and wave their hands toyou. You wave them back.

When the song stops, wave to children again and say Hello. Encourage them to say Hi/Hello back .

Now play the song again and have the kids go around and say Hi/Hello to their friends.

2. Introducing name. I’m_________. (10 Let students listen and sing

the song “I see you.” Ask them to give gestures while singing.

B. GETTING READY (5 minutes) Have the kids look at the map poster of the island. Explain that they will be visiting the preschool on the island. Point it out. Tell children that there are classrooms in the preschool. Ask them to look around their

classroom and talk about things they see.

C. WORKING IN THE BOOK: PAGE 12

1. Present the vocabulary: book, chair, crayon, pencil, table, teacher

Show the page 12 of student book on the screen. Ask the kids to look at the picture of the classroom scene.

Point to the people & things in the picture and ask them a few questions about the picture (in Vietnamese). Encourage them to say English words for whatever they know.

Use picture card of bookto introduce it to the kids. Say booka few times and ask the kids to repeat the word.

Put the picture of book on the floor and continue to introduce other words (chair, crayon, pencil, table, teacher.)

Notes : Keep in mind that always repeat saying the previous words before teaching a new one.

After placing all cards on the floor. Go back to the first card and say the word one by one with the students.

2. Actions: o Read a book.o Sit ona chair.o Draw witha pencil.o Color with a crayon.o Tap on a table.o Learn with ateacher.

2.1. Have students listen and imitate the actions One by one introduce the sentence and do action that goes with it. Have students imitate you with each action. Notes:

o Repeat the previous sentence before introducing a new one.o Keep to the order that sentences are presented.

2.2. Have students listen and do the actions& repeat the target words. Say the sentence one by one and have the kids do the action. Ask them

to say the target word with you. (E.g. Reada book.;Sit on a chair.) Notes: Remember to keep to the order that sentences are presented.

Prepare 2 bags/backpacks by placing some school supplies and a few silly things such as some stuffed animals.

Divide the class into 2 teams and have them stand/or sit down at their lines. Invite 2 kids from 2 teams and each one will touch objects inside the bag and choose

one. Before taking the object out, he/she will say the sentence I have….. If the object he/she chooses is correct, he/she gets one point for the team.

A. REVIEWING Red & Blue. (10 minutes) Have the kids sit in a circle with you. Prepare a few objects in red and blue. Choose the objects they have already learned. (crayon,

pencil, book.) You can choose 2 objects with 2 colors of blue and red. Play the game: Pass it around.

o Place the objects in front of you. Review the vocabulary of red, blue and names of the objects you want to use first.

o Play the music (any song you think they may like).o Hand the first object to the kid on your right and say the color of the thing. E.g. red.o That kid gets the thing and continues to pass it to the next one and says the color.o The object is passed around the circle, with each child saying the name of the color of the

object.o Meanwhile, begin passing another object around the circle.o Add one more object at a time until multiple items are passing around the circle.o Notes: If it is too noisy over control or students get confused because of too many objects
