One of the hardest things about being a foreign language teacher is that you can find yourself working “in a bubble”, with little inspiration or input from outside your own classroom. If you don’t regularly interact with people who have mastered the language you teach, how can you hope to maintain or improve your own level? Our courses offer the chance to re-engage with the language you teach.

In addition, by taking a refresher course you can fine-tune your technique with input from expert trainers and exchange knowledge with other experienced teachers from around the world. We offer courses for both native and non-native speakers in a range of exciting locations.

Refresher Courses for Language Teachers

Why take a refresher course?• Fine-tune your skills and update your knowledge of current methodologies with expert trainers

• Gain a recognised certificate from a reputable organisation and boost your career

• Immerse yourself in the language and culture you teach. Our courses combine training with travel, so you can brush up your methodology while totally surrounded by the language you teach.

• Get back to the source of the language you teach and re-engage with it

• Meet fellow professional language teachers from around the world, swap ideas and benefit from collective feedback

• Enjoy an active holiday in an interesting location

Who are refresher courses for?Refresher courses are suitable for anyone who has been teaching languages for a year or more. There are two broad categories of refresher course available:

Courses for native or near-native speakers. These focus on language teach-ing methodology and do not include specified language training sessions. They are appropriate for teachers with level C1/C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Courses for non-native speakers. Courses are available for teachers with intermedi-ate level (B2 on the CEFR) or above of the language they teach. These courses blend teaching methodology with language development work.

Courses can be arranged for individuals or small groups of teachers with a similar level of the language they teach.

What topics are covered?A “general refresher” course covers the whole range of teaching skills, from classroom management and lesson planning to language awareness, technology in teaching and approaches for younger learners. Depending on where you choose to study, the exact content of the course will vary slightly (use of technology in the language class-room, teaching young learners). One important element in all refresher courses is the exchange of ideas and feedback between participants.

Teachers of English enjoy a particularly wide range of options, including refresher courses dedicated to “CLIL” (Content and Language Integrated Learning methodology). These courses can be tailored to the needs of the individual teacher, so you can develop materials relevant for your own classroom.

What is the experience like? You will work closely with a group of fellow professionals, with input from expert teacher trainers. Refresher courses attract teachers who take their craft seriously and you will find yourself working with a focused group. That doesn’t mean that it is all work and no play – swapping stories and anecdotes after a long day is definitely part of the experience.

Our courses are offered at interesting and exciting destinations, so you will be stimula-ted outside of the classroom too.

Varied activity programsDiscover diverse locations through our lively and varied activity programs. Enjoy your hard-earned holiday time and explore another culture.

Entry requirementsEntry requirements vary between courses, but most are suitable for any teacher with a year or more of experience teaching languages. Some courses require a pre-course interview, which ESL can arrange to be taken online at a time that suits you. We facili-tate and oversee the application process from start to finish.

What does it cost? Our courses offer exceptional value and come with a best price guarantee. You pay no administration fee or supplement for booking with ESL, but enjoy all the benefits of working with a leading agency, including local support through all the different steps of the registration process. If you teach within the European Union or European Economic Area you may also be eligible for funding under the EU’s Comenius programme. More information is available online.

You often hear that the world is becoming a smaller place. More people are travelling internationally than ever before. Businesses are trading across the world in ways that would not have been possible twenty years ago. People fall in love across continents.

At the heart of all this is language. The world is only a smaller place for those with language skills: those who can make the connection between cultures. As a language teacher, you give people the skills to make this happen.

A qualification in teaching languages is a ticket to the world; anywhere that people need to learn your language, your skills are in demand and there is work waiting for you.

• Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing

• Language development

• Classroom management skills

• Supervised lesson planning

• Observation of experienced teachers

• Learning and teaching methodologies

• Teaching materials and resources for different contexts

• Understanding the learner and motivations
