Teacher: Hi, I am sure you have read about the functions of each cellstructure. I am giving you Activity Sheet 1 and you have to follow
the instructions on it.
Teacher gives out Activity Sheet 1 and reads out the instructions on
it.
Let us read the instructions together. First, circle in black all theparts of a basic living unit. Then underline in blue the functions of
each part of a cell. Next, underline in green the part of a cell whichcontains hereditary material. Now, try to do it yourself.
Allow time for students to carry out the activity.
Let us go through the answers. Can I have your answers? Just put up your hand. Yes, your answers
are correct.
The parts of a basic living unit are the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. Besides these, the plant cell has cell wall and
vacuoles.
The cell membrane controls the movement of substances in and out
of the cell.
The cytoplasm is where the chemical processes of the cell take
place.
The nucleus controls all the cell activities.
Cell wall of the plant supports and gives shape to the cell.
Vacuoles contain cell sap.
Chlorophyll, found in chloroplast is important in photosynthesis
The part of a cell which has hereditary material is the nucleus which
contains chromosomes.
Teacher shows labeled activity sheets of the plant and animal cell.
These are the correct labels. Did anyone labeled any of thesewrongly? It is alright to make mistakes, but correct them.
Teacher gives out Activity Sheet 2.
I want you to compare and contrast plant and animal cells. Try by
filling in the blanks in Activity Sheet 2.
Students fill in the blanks in the graphic organizer. They can work in
groups or pairs.

Under The Microscope
Read the text below and then follow the instructions
The basic cell structure includes the cell membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus. The
membrane of the cell is the thin outer most layer of a cell. It controls themovement of substances in and out of the cell. Cytoplasm is the jelly-like, and
colourless part of a cell. The chemical processes of the cell happen in thecytoplasm. The nucleus is the most important part of a cell as it controls all the cell
activities. The nucleus contains chromosomes.Plant cells contain green pigment which is called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is used
during the process of photosynthesis. The plant cell wall is made of cellulose whichsupports and gives shape to the cell. Vacuoles inside a cell contain cell sap (water
and soluble substances).
Instructions
