Remind the children that Shan has had a terrible day and went to bed very sad. Ask: How do you think she will feel tomorrow? Do you think she will feel brave and strong? Agree that hopefully, some of the feelings she’s had in the island will help her as she tackles the next day. Together, speculate on what could happen in a sequel. Perhaps Grandma Lulu will get a message to her that the monster is causing problems.

Ask: How does Max describe Shan? (brave and curious) Clarify the meaning of ‘curious’ here. (interested in things, not strange) Ask: What does the unicorn say? (“You’re amazing. You can do anything.”) Ask: How does Shan feel when she hears these things? (surprised, pleased) Why is she pleased to hear this? (She has had a bad day and was feeling bad about herself before she entered the island.) Ask the children to write out each of it’s, you’re and what’s as two words.

Read up to She needed to go home. Ask: Should Shan go home or stay on the island? Together draw up two lists. For example, ‘Stay’ (Max, dragon, unicorn, fun, Grandma Lulu, feels brave, feels safe, feels happy) and ‘Go’ (Dad, home, friends, school) Encourage the children to think how they would feel in the same situation. Ask: Why can Shan go home? (She has the paperweight.) Ask: What makes her sad? (saying goodbye to Grandma Lulu and Max)

Read to the end of the story. Challenge the children to find all the words that tell them how Shan, Mum and Dad feel, for example: joy, brilliant, fell into his arms, laughed, smiled. Why does Shan’s father cry? (He’s so happy, because he’s missed his wife, because he thought Shan had left forever.) Ask: Why do you think Shan squeezed the paperweight? (Perhaps she is just checking that it is still there because she wants to be able to go back.)

Read up to “… But you cannot get home.” Ask: How does Shan feel when she sees her father? What does the phrase She gasped. tell us? (She is shocked.) Ask: How is Shan’s dad feeling? How do you know? Agree that he is sad (he is crying) and he is missing Shan (he is sitting on her bed). How does Shan feel when she sees him? (sad) Ask: What do we learn about Shan’s mother? (She has been watching Shan through the gap and missing her.)

Recap on the previous chapter together. Ask: What do you think Shan will see through the glowing gap? (perhaps her way home) Read up to She gasped. Ask: Why does Max tell Shan that the glowing gap is dangerous? (He thinks it will make her want to go home and he wants her to stay.) Ask: Why does he want her to stay? (He’s lonely and wants a friend.) Ask: Was Max bad to lie to Shan in this way? Discuss whether the children can understand how Max feels.
