6th Grade CORE Lesson March 25, 2015

Standard: AZ-6.NS.B.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.

The Basic Steps:• Make sure the divisor is a whole number, if it isn’t move decimal point to right to

make it a whole number.

• If you moved the decimal point in the divisor, move decimal point in dividend the same number of places.

(Whatever you do to one side, do to the other!)

• Put decimal point directly above decimal point in the dividend.

• Estimate

• Divide as usual. ...

• Check your answer.

Why Estimate?• Before dividing your numbers, use one of the

estimating strategies you learned to see what the answer should be close to.

• When you divide, you can see if your answer is reasonable.

Example… To move or not to move?

Yes, move

Let’s do this together now

23.688 divided by .56

.56 23.688move decimalto the end to make this a whole number

Whatever you do toThe divisor, you do to The dividend

. Move the decimal up, then divide

Let’s do this together now

23.688 divided by .56

56 23688.4.

Let’s do this together now234 divided by 1.2

1.2 234..0

In order to move the decimal in the dividend, we first had to add the decimal to the end of 234, then we could move it

Let’s do this together now
