EVENT REPORTS Awesome Athletes Although the wild winds of June blew voraciously across the footy field at Hawks Nest, it did not deter our awesome athletes. Students participated in 100m, 200m and 800m races, high jump, long jump and shot put throughout the day. The round robin activities, which included the traditional egg and spoon race and tug-o-war as well as javelin throw and ball games, gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their determination and just have some fun. What did some of the kids think? Charli Callaghan (Year 1) said “It was a really good day”. While Kaitlyn Smith (Year 5) simply added “It was awesome.” Claire Carter (Year 4) “The egg and spoon race was really fun and so was the running even though I came second last.” Kobi Bates (Year 4) “It was great. The races, sprints and relays were the best.” Braiven Megallon (Year 6) “Long jump was the best because I’m really good at it.” Braiven won this event with a jump measuring 3.66 metres. Mrs True, noted “I took my role of timekeeping really seriously and couldn’t have done it without my fantastic parent team!” Notable individual performances from the 100m event included: 1st place in 100m Boys Girls 8 Years Ethan Avery 18.84 seconds Georgia Lawler 20.85 seconds 9 Years Sam Alchin 19.20 seconds Amelia Henning 18.44 seconds 10 Years Tyler Rodgers 16.43 seconds Haleigh Simmons 18.40 seconds 11 Years Lachlan Riley 17.57 seconds Gemma Brown 17.54 seconds 12 Years Makai Dvorik 17.66 seconds Lilly-Ann White 16.22 seconds

Student Debating In the last week of Term 2, the Tea Gardens Public School Debating team went to Bungwahl Public School for the next debate in the LNC Debating competition. The topic was 'the Olympics are a waste of money' with Bungwahl Public School as the affirmative team and Tea Gardens Public School as the negative team. Our team consisted of Kaitliyn Smith as first speaker, Bravien Megallon as second speaker, Sophie Frazer as third speaker and Caitlin Condie as team adviser. Both teams presented interesting arguments and incorporated creative rebuttals into their speeches. Bungwahl Public School won the debate by a narrow margin. Both teams are to be congratulated on their efforts.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Before and After School Care- Expressions of Interest The school has been approached by Tamlin Young who is keen to see if recommencing a before and after school care service is viable. She is currently in the process of registering as a Family Day Care Educator with Five Star Family Day Care and is keen to offer a before and after school service to the local community. Tamlin has indicated that she is diploma trained in childcare and has been working in the industry for 10 years. She will be able to claim CCB and CCR through the Family Assistance Office as a fee reduction. This will guarantee 50% off fees and then families may be eligible to another fee reduction depending on their family income. To guide informed decision making, Tamlin has requested interested families provide additional information to her in relation to the day/ days and times your child(ren) would use the service if this were to be offered. For additional information or to express your interest, please contact Tamlin at [email protected]

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome to term 3. It is a busy time for the library this term with both the Book Fair (week 3) and Book Week (week 6) coming up. The theme is Escape to Everywhere which encompasses both events. Books are an amazing place into which we can escape, whether we are escaping into an imaginary world, reading about a place we would like to visit or even planning our future and imagining what we would like to be when we grow up.

Book Fair Competition In the lead up to the book fair we are running a book cover creating competition using the theme Escape to Everywhere.

To enter the competition you must create a cover for a book with the title Escape to Everywhere. It can be any kind of book - fiction or non-fiction, picture book, novel, information book or comic. It can be created digitally or on paper. Every student will be given time to create an entry during their library lesson but may enter a second time if they wish to create one at home as well.

The winner for each stage will be announced during the book fair.

Due date - Monday 31 July

Prize - $15 to spend at the book fair for the winner from each stage

Winning entries will be published in the newsletter in week 4.

Book Fair Times The Book fair will be open during education week (week 3) on Monday 31 July through to Thursday 3 August. A flyer is attached to this newsletter. Purchases can be made both before school and at lunchtime.

Book Week Parade In week 6 the school will be celebrating Book Week and back by popular demand is the dress up parade. The Book Week theme this year is Escape to Everywhere Date - Tuesday 22nd August (Week 6) Time – 12.00 Costume - Anything inspired by books, you could be an explorer of different places, a book character from a book you like to escape to or come dressed as what you want to be when you grow up when you escape your childhood. As an added bonus see if you can bring the book that inspired your costume.

Thank you for your ongoing support

Dear Parents,Scholastic wants to help you raise readers! Research now shows that the benefits are definite and measurable when children read frequently for pleasure.

The Australian Kids & Family Reading Report™ reveals that in children aged 6–11, one of the most

powerful predictors of reading frequency is parental involvement in encouraging reading.

A Scholastic Book Fair is the perfect place for children to discover a love of books and ignite a lifelong passion for reading. Look through this invitation with your child to preselect some possible choices and pay for your books at the Book Fair.
