FIGHT PROSTATE

CANCERTea needs you!

TEA FOR VICTORYORGANISER’S INFORMATION PACK

Thank you for organising a Tea for Victory party. This pack contains tips and information that will help you grab your rolling pin and give prostate cancer its marching orders.

WE WILL FIGHT IT ON THE TEA TABLES, WE WILL FIGHT IT AT THE STREET PARTIES,

AND TOGETHER WE’LL HELP MORE MEN SURVIVE PROSTATE CANCER AND ENJOY A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.

8 January 1940 RATIONING BEGINS IN THE UK

OUR TOP TIPS FOR A GREAT PARTY• Keep calm and pick a date and venue

It could be your house, a local coffee shop, a park, at work, or even outside in your street!

• Propaganda, propaganda, propaganda! Tell as many people as you can with our invites and posters and let your friends know by email, Facebook, Twitter, telegram and morse code. Tell us too and we’ll help you spread the word.

• Bake for victory Get baking (or shopping!) and make sure you have everything you need for the day. Don’t forget local supermarkets, shops or cafes may be willing to provide some food and drink for free for your event. Don’t be afraid to ask.

• Make do and share your story Take photos and share your day and story with us. We want everyone to know how you are doing your bit to fight prostate cancer.

• Look after the pennies After the event is finished don’t forget to send in the money you have raised using the donation form.

• Have a spiffing time Enjoy your Tea for Victory party, for our greatest weapon is you and your support.

EMBRACING THE THEME We have an exclusively designed, limited edition Wayne Hemingway party pack available for £10 containing a themed cake stand, tablecloth and bunting.

Ultimately this is your party and we want you to decide how far you take the Tea for Victory theme. From wearing full 1940s style outfits, making your cakes with a week’s worth of rations to just using our themed posters and bunting, make it cake and tea at all costs.

In 2006 my step-dad Geoff was diagnosed with prostate cancer. We were all devastated but Geoff was the strongest of us all and always looked for the positives. Before Geoff became very poorly he asked me to organise a family charity event to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

My mum and sister spotted a poster about organising a tea party for Prostate Cancer UK. We know a lot of people who like tea and cake so we set a date, invited everyone we could think of, recruited our bakers and got baking! It was a brilliant day.

Sadly last year after fighting for so long, Geoff passed away. I will always feel honoured to have known and loved my step-dad. He was a wonderful husband, dad and friend. Everyone always described him as “such a lovely man”. We hope we did him proud. Lucy Weaving

4 July 1954 RATIONING ENDS IN THE UK (DID YOU KNOW THAT RATIONING GREATLY IMPROVED BRITISH PEOPLE’S DIETS FOR THE PERIOD – WITH A DIET FULL OF VITAMIN RICH FOODS AND EXTRA VEGETABLES).

Did you know?

IN THE 1940S, WOMEN USED TEA TO STAIN THEIR LEGS WHEN NYLON STOCKINGS WERE SCARCE. AND BECAUSE OF RATIONING ON LOTS OF STAPLE FOODS, COOKS HAD TO IMPROVISE CHRISTMAS CAKES AND PUDDINGS DEVOID OF DRIED FRUIT AND MARZIPAN, USING INSTEAD SPONGE OR OTHER UNLIKELY INGREDIENTS.

Fighting prostate cancer in the fortiesIN 1941 CHARLES HUGGINS DISCOVERED AND DEVELOPED “HORMONE THERAPY” TREATMENT FOR PROSTATE CANCER. IN 1945 TERENCE MILLIN INTRODUCED THE RETROPUBIC PROSTATECTOMY – SURGERY WHERE THE PROSTATE IS REMOVED THROUGH AN INCISION IN THE ABDOMEN. BOTH ARE STILL USED TO THIS DAY.

Prostate Cancer UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1005541) and in Scotland (SC039332). Registered company number 2653887 1397
