The Church is the whole Catholic community of believers throughout the world. The term can also be used in the sense of a diocese or a particular parish. 6. The three Persons of the divine community of the Holy Trinity are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. 7. Imago Dei means ‘image of God’. Humans are created in and intended to function as the image of God. seCTion Two: hear The sTory 8. Deuteronomy 7:9 describes God as always loyal and faithful to his Covenant with human beings. 9. The term ‘Covenant’ describes a solemn agreement between God and human beings involving mutual commitments or guarantees. God maintains his Covenant with those who love him and keep his commandments. 10. Salvation: The forgiveness of sins and the restoration of friendship with God, which can be done by God alone. 11. Through Noah God saved; through Abraham God called, promised and gathered his people; through Moses God freed and liberated his people; through the Torah God gave us laws that revealed the nature of the Covenant; through the prophets God renewed the divine promises for all people. 12. Go from your country to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will make your name great. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. 13. In this story God was preparing the world for the coming of Jesus Christ. 14. The Israelites leſt Canaan and fled to Egypt to escape the famine. 15. The Israelites grew in numbers and the Pharaoh felt threatened by their presence. 16. God would send Moses to the Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of Egypt and out of slavery. 17. God delivered the Torah to the Israelites aſter Moses brought the Israelites out of slavery. The Torah contains the law of the Covenant with God’s people. seCTion Three: emBraCe The Vision19. Incarnation: God became fully human in Jesus. Public ministry of Jesus: Jesus taught people, healed the sick and lifted up the brokenhearted. He preached and brought about the Kingdom of God in his Person and through his ministry. Death and Resurrection of Jesus: Because of his love for his Father and for all humanity, Jesus freely accepted death on the Cross. God the Father raised Jesus from the dead on the third day. Ascension: The return of the risen Christ to his Father; traditionally, this occurred forty days after Jesus’ Resurrection. Pentecost: The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. 20. During the Exile, the prophet Isaiah proclaimed the coming of a new creation, a new kingdom in which God’s reign would prevail. 21. Jesus announced the Kingdom of God that Prophet Isaiah had so clearly foretold. 22. Sacrifice: A free offering, a gift, made by a person for the welfare of others. The Latin roots mean ‘To make sacred’. 23. Adam was the beginning of the new creation as recounted in the Book of Genesis. Jesus is the ‘New Adam’ in and through whom the re-creation of the world began and is now taking place. 24. As responsible members of the community we are called (1) to work toward bringing about the Kingdom of God here and now; (2) to prepare for the coming of the Kingdom of God at the end of time; (3) to grow together as Jesus’ disciples by learning, by praying, by celebrating and by doing good works of charity and justice. 25. Redemption: The salvation won for us by Jesus paying the price of his own death on the Cross to set us free from the slavery of sin.

seCTion four: Think iT Through26. The sustaining power of the Church is the Holy Spirit. 27. Jesus proclaimed that the sustaining power of the Holy Spirit would always be present in the Church. 28. The Holy Spirit is always at work in every culture, in every age, until the end of time, as the hidden mystery of God’s saving presence among us. 29. The disciples were graced with the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit. 30. Jesus said, ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.’ The disciples went out to baptize people of all nations.

seCTion fiVe: Judge and aCT31. Christians had to endure imprisonment, torture and death. 32. St. Cyprian went into hiding to save his life and protect the future of the Church. 33. After the death of Emperor Decius the persecution ended and the Church re-emerged battered but not defeated.
