Port Blair, Nov. 15 The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi has said that development of A&N Islands is of paramount importance. Besides developing tourism, basic necessities of the Islanders will be given equal importance, he said. The Lt. Governor was speaking in an interview broadcast over the All India Radio, Port Blair here this morning. The Lt. Governor said, efforts are on to transform the entire Islands into pollution free Islands. He Lt. Governor reiterates his commitment towards taking Islands on the path of development said, the current power generation is diesel based, costing around Rs. 750 crores per year besides giving rise to pollution. Hence, it is his priority to make these Islands 100% green energy by Dec 31, 2018. He said, diesel generated power shall be done away with; while, at present per unit cost of the power consumed is Rs. 18 and the rest are given under subsidy. As a measure to check this, a scheme has been launched, under which, a 100 MW Solar power plant will be set up here in the Isles, said the Lt. Governor adding that the foundation stone for one solar power project has already been laid and two more will be taken up. "Once all these are set, the entire Islands will be completely changed to solar powered energy", he said. The Lt. Governor also remarked that the Raj Niwas is the first building in Islands where power requirement is met 100% through solar powered energy. Accordingly, 13 Government buildings/ Institutions have been identified for installation of roof top solar panels and within a month's time i.e. December end; these buildings will be completely solar powered. Meanwhile, efforts are on to sensitize the public to install roof top solar panel in their respective houses. The Central Government will provide 70% subsidy and the Administration will make best use of the scheme for the benefit of the Islanders. He also appreciated the fact that people of all walks of life, residing in these Islands including the Administrative Officers, avail health facilities in Govt. Hospitals in the A&N Islands. He said, he is proud of the fact that the Islands' per capita income, literacy rate and the per capita expenditure by Govt of India, are much higher compared to any other states on the mainland. The social security measures to all needy people are also in place, he said. About tourism in Andamans, the Lt Governor said, adventurous activities, like sea walk, scuba diving, are the special attraction for tourists, while sub marine scooter will be stared soon too. It has been reported that certain business houses including Hospitals, Caterers, Tent houses etc. are not accepting Cheques/Demand Drafts and online payment transfer from customers. In such cases, the customers have been advised to lodge their complaint to the District Magistrate/Dy. Commissioner (SA) over phone No.9434280018 or on the District Control Room toll free No. 1070 or submit written complaint for appropriate action against such establishment, a communication from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman said here today. Port Blair, Nov. 15 With a view to widen the existing facilities to exchange/ deposit the specified bank notes and withdraw cash from their accounts, the following additional measures so that member public enjoy as much convenience as possible in availing the facility. The limit for exchange of Specified Bank Notes, over the counter has been increased from the existing Rs.4000/- to Rs.4500. The weekly limit of Rs.20000/- for withdrawal from bank accounts has been increased to Rs.24000 and the daily limit of Rs.10000/- per day stands withdrawn. Arrangements will be made for separate queues for senior citizens and divyang (disabled) persons. As many as 200 suchidentified persons will be asked to compulsory install solar power roof top panelwithin a specified time and by March 31, 2018, the vision of turning the entire Islandsinto green Islands can be achieved. The Lt. Governor further stated that efforts are also on to study the feasibility ofharnessing energy from wind and tidal waves. Accordingly, some companies have beeninvited to carry out the feasibility study and present their views to the Administration.The Lt. Governor further stated that there would not be a need for conventional energyduring rainy season, since power generation will be sufficient, though, it may be less. Allsuch challenges have been taken into consideration already, he said, adding that everysolar panel installed in the rooftop will be connected with power grid and consumers canutilize as per their requirements while the unutilized energy will automatically go to thegrid and the consumer will be paid accordingly. Thus, the consumer can in turn utilize thesaved energy during rainy season through payment. This way, power supply will not beinterrupted. Pertaining to connectivity in Isles, the Lt. Governor said, connectivity issue is quitechallenging and the need of the hour is to ensure the availability of proper connectivityin the Islands. The Lt. Governor said, under a scheme, the idea of a submarine cableproject was conceived in 2008 and in 2011, the Planning Commission gave its approvalbut due to some reason, it was not implemented. However, during his recent meeting withthe Hon'ble Prime Minister, the Lt. Governor apprised him of the issues pertaining toconnectivity and accordingly on September 21, 2016, the Cabinet approval has beenobtained. Efforts are also on to pursue the completion of codal formalities by December31, 2016 and by January 2017, the Optical Fiber Cable Project will be inaugurated, and theproject will be completed by December 31, 2018, he said. The Lt. Governor further stated that proper connectivity is important for Tourism, astourists visiting these islands would want to remain connected with their family andbusiness in mainland. Hence, there is need to improve connectivity. He said, air connectivityhas improved significantly, as five new flights have started their services to Port Blair i.e.two flights from Delhi, Kolkata, and one each from Hyderabad, Mumbai & Bengaluru.This, he said has not only improved connectivity but has brought down the high airfaretariff. The Lt. Governor said, he has also apprised the Central Government about Veer SavarkarInternational Airport, which has been declared an international airport by the Govt. but assuch, no international flights touches Port Blair. Accordingly, the Lt. Governor hasrequested the Central Govt. that International flights flying above A&N Islands can havea short stopover at Port Blair. Through this, he said, tourism would automaticallyimprove. Flights going to Phuket can connect Kolkata -Port Blair-, Phuket which willimprove the flow of business as well as tourism activities here. Opening of newhotels here in isles for high-end tourist will also be considered while low-end touristsare also being welcomed. Construction of Hotel Taj is complete and by March 2017 itwill be inaugurated. However, the target of the Administration is to ensure moreinflow of tourists and to make these Islands all year round tourism destination. "Lowrates hotels are also available here for the tourists besides the Administration is alsoencouraging Islanders to open up their homes in the form of 'Home Stays' with 'Bedand Breakfast' facility, said the Lt. Governor adding that the concept of 'Home Stay'is picking up slowly here in these Isles too.Besides tourism, the A&N Islands are also known as 'Water Sports Capital' of Indiaand importance will be given to this sector too, said the Lt. Governor. Adventurouswater sports like Scuba Diving, Sea Walk are quite popular among tourists visitingthe Islands, said the Lt. Governor adding that efforts will be made to reintroducedseaplane services in the Isles. The Lt. Governor further stated that the Administrationis also planning to introduce 'Submarine Scooter', which will be the first of its kind inIsles as well as the country and feasibility study as well as safety aspects are beingstudied. The Lt. Governor said, virgin beaches of Isles will also be promoted for tourismactivities and five more Islands will be opened for tourists. Neeli Aayog has decidedfour new places to be opened for tourism development. Ross Island, Smith Island,Long Island and Avis Island are the Islands which will be opened for tourism activities.Subsequently, Port Blair city will be given a facelift through the Smart City Mission,added the Lt. Governor.The Lt. Governor said, plans are also in the pipeline to construct multi-storied buildingshere in Port Blair and elsewhere. As these Islands comes under seismic zone, expertsfrom Japan will be invited to study the feasibility with their technology to develophigh rise buildings. About Education in Isles, the Lt. Governor said, a Central University will be set upin Isles for the benefit of the students. He said Isles' students are quite bright andenthusiastic towards studies. "The blending of sports and education can be seenhere in the Isles and it is quite good, because development of talent is necessary,said the Lt. Governor adding that recently opened Sports Academy besides the LawCollege & Medical College will largely benefit the Islanders.He said, for quality education, a Central University is necessary which will cater tothe educational needs of the Islanders in every aspect. Quality education is importantand with the setting up of a Central University, better faculty will be available, thusimproving the quality of education here, he said. The Lt. Governor also reiterated his commitment towards taking the Islands towardsthe path of further development.
