The experimental women's
T20 ahead of IPL play-offs did
not attract a sizeable crowd but
CoA member Diana Edulji
insists the one-off game was a
positive step and will lead to
"something substantial" next
season. There was not much
crowd support for the match
played on a sultry Mumbai
afternoon ahead of the IPL
Qualifier 1 between eventual
IPL champions Chennai Super
Kings and Sunrisers
Hyderabad on May 22. Top
Indian and overseas players
including Harmanpreet Kaur,
Mithali Raj, Suzie Bates and
Meg Lanning were part of the
game which went down to the
wire. "In my view, the match
was a success and many
followed it on television. Yes,
there were not many spectators
but that was also the case
during the 2016 Women's
World T20 (when the event
was held simultaneously with
the men's competition)," Edulji
told PTI. "So, I am not so sure
i f the BCCI could have
scheduled the game better but
considering i t was
accommodated during the IPL,
the board did the best it could. I
am sure more games like these
will be played next season, if
not a full-fledged IPL, " the
former India captain said.
Irrespective of the response,
the one-off fixture has fuelled
the demand of a women's IPL.
Considering the dearth of
Despite lukewarm response for women's
T20, Edulji promises more for next IPLquality Indian players, the
league can be started with even
four teams, something that has
already been suggested by
India T20 captain Harmanpreet
and opener Smriti Mandhana.
Well, we cannot have eight
teams right now, but yes,three
or four teams. To start with it
would be a good initiative
because when the men's IPL
began (in 2008), only foreigners
did well in the first two seasons.
Later on, we started developing
India's bench strength,"
Mandhana had said of the
exhibition match at Wankhede.
Australia already has a Women's

League (UK version of women's
T20 league), which was
introduced in 2016.
Kvitova fights back to reach
French Open second roundParis, May 28
Two-time Wimbledon champion
Petra Kvitova fought back from
a set down to beat Paraguayan
Veronica Cepede Royg and
reach the French Open
second round on Monday.
The eighth seed struggled
early on Court Phi l ippe
Chatrier, but came through 3-
6, 6-1, 7-5 to set up a meeting
with Spaniard Lara
Arruabarrena.
The 28-year-old Kvitova is
one of the favourites to win a
maiden Roland Garros title after
winning four titles this season,
including on clay in Prague and
Madrid.
"I've won 12 matches straight
on clay, but I'm still a long way
from Rafa," she said in
reference to Rafael Nadal's
upcoming bid for an 11th men's
singles crown.
Cepede Royg, who
surprisingly reached the last 16
in Paris last year, claimed the
first set courtesy of a single
break of the Kvitova serve.
But the Czech roared back,
racing through the second set
in only half an hour, before
holding her nerve in a tight
decider as Cepede Royg
dropped serve in the 11th
game.

Daniel Ricciardo brought back
memories of Formula One
great Michael Schumacher in
his prime as the Australian
nursed a wounded Red Bull to
Monaco Grand Prix victory in
the team’s 250th race.
Winning from pole position for
the first time in his career,
Ricciardo drove for nearly two
thirds of the race — some 50
laps — with a car down on
power due to problems that
emerged on lap 28.
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, last
year’s race winner, finished
second — easing off towards
the finish to save the tyres — to
cut Lewis Hamilton’s overall
lead to 14 points after six of 21
rounds.
Hamilton, the reigning world
champion, was third for
Mercedes.
“You have done an amazing
job today,” team boss Christian
Horner said after Ricciardo took
the chequered flag 7.3 seconds
clear of Vettel for his second win
of the season and seventh of
his career.
“That is right up there with what
Schumacher did in 1995 and
this is payback for 2016.”

BCCI goes ‘green’ by joining
hands with UNNew Delhi, May 28
The BCCI and UN
Environment on Sunday
signed an agreement to
promote ‘green’ cricket in India.
BCCI acting secretary Amitabh
Choudhary and Erik Solheim,
Execut ive Director of UN
Environment, signed a letter of
intent at the BCCI headquarters
in Mumbai ahead of the IPL final
between Chennai Super Kings
and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
“The partnership aims to
spread greater awareness
about key environmental
challenges facing the country,
and highlight alternate and
more sustainable solutions. The
BCCI will endeavor to reduce
its environmental impact by
greening operat ions and
engaging cricketers and fans
in green initiatives,” said the
BCCI in a statement.
Commenting on the initiative,
Choudhary said: “We will help
make cricket green and
sensitize spectators towards
minimizing waste generation
during matches.”
The partnership will also focus
on phasing out single-use
plastic across stadiums in the
country.
Even during the course of IPL,
a film with messages from
captains of various franchises
was created and aired in
stadiums highlighting hazards
of plastic pollution.
At the four matches played at
the Holkar Stadium, a Green
Protocol based on the concept
of 3Rs – to reduce, reuse and
recycle was implemented.
“A plast ic audit is being
undertaken there to assess the
types and volumes of single-
use plastic generated and chart
a course to implement waste
management system,”read the
statement further. Similarly, at
the M Chinnaswamy stadium
in Bengaluru, the Karnataka
State Cricket Association
replaced plastic cups and
bottles with environment-
friendly alternatives for over
32,000 fans.
Venus Williams knocked out by
China's Wang Qiang in first roundParis, May 28
Former world number one
Venus Williams suffered a shock
defeat by Chinese player Wang
Qiang in the French Open first
round on Sunday.
The 37-year-old ninth seed
was well short of her best as
Wang claimed a 6-4 7-5 victory
and gained a measure of
revenge for her first-round loss
to Venus at Roland Garros last
year. The seven-time Grand
Slam champion has now lost
both her matches at major
tournaments this year, having
reached the Australian Open
and Wimbledon finals in 2017.
Wang, the world number 91,
has never made the third round
of a Slam, and will face Petra
Martic of Croatia for a place in
the last 32 after the biggest win
of her career.
answers to these raging issues, he added.
Saying that the process of questioning and seeking
solutions lies at the heart of research, the Vice President
said that human progress is not possible without the
quest for deeper understanding of the world around.
Research and innovation make us grow and they
transform the world we inhabit, he added.
The Vice President said that posing relevant questions
and seeking answers must be a way of life. He said that
children and young adults must be encouraged to ask
questions and search for answers. Quality of research
is an important indicator of the quality of an educational
system and said that it also determines the pace of a
country's development. Paying tributes to the first Prime
Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary, he
said the former Prime Minister felt that integration of
science and technology with national planning was
necessary to improve the socio-economic conditions of
the teeming millions of people of our country.
He also recalled the contribution of Dr. Shyama Prasad
Mukherjee, who was the first Vice President of CSIR. He
said that CSIR has also instituted a special fellowship
as a tr ibute namely, "DR. SHYAMA PRASAD
MUKHERJEE (SPM) FELLOWSHIP" to commemorate

After equaling World Record in
qualifying, Anjum Moudgil fizzles in final
at ISSF World CupMunich, May 28
It was Anjum Moudgil’s second
shot in the second elimination
series of the standing position
and with a score of 8.5, the
Chandigarh shooter, placed
third before the start of the
series, slipped to seventh spot
in the final of the women’s 50m
Rifle 3 Position event at the
ISSF World Cup in Munich.
Moudgil, who had shot just one
shot of more than 10 in the six
prior to that, then shot three
scores of more than 10 to go
into the single shot elimination
in fourth spot. But her first shot
of 9.2 meant that the 24-year-
old bowed out of the
competition.
Before the standing series in
the final, Moudgil, who shot a
score of 1177 in the qualification
round, had ended the kneeling
and prone series in second
spot. The field included Rio
Olympics silver medallist Binbin
Zhang (bronze) and three-time
World Cup medallist Chen
Dongqi (silver), both from
China. Six of the eight shooters
who qualified for the final had
their lowest scoring series as
the standing series and Anjum’s
score of 386 in qualification
meant she qualified in sixth
spot.
On Saturday, when Moudgil
had shot a world record
qualifying score of 1180 in the
elimination relay, her score of
390 was her lowest in the
standing series. Sunday’s gold
medallist Elaheh Ahmadi of
Iran shot the best score of 396
in the standing series in
qualification but had the lowest
score of 387 in the kneeling
position series.
Paris, May 28
Despite losing out in the third
round of the French Open
qualifiers, India’s third-highest
ranked singles player Prajnesh
Gunneswaran was given an
opportunity to make the main
draw as a lucky loser.
However, the 28-year-old had
already confirmed his
participation at next week’s
Euro 64,000 Challenger in
Vicenza, Italy, and as such, is
not allowed to play the main
draw in Paris. Since the world
No. 183 had already confirmed
his participation at one event,
he is not allowed to pull out of
that and compete in another
tournament in the same week.
On Sunday, world No. 23 Nick
Kyrgios withdrew from Roland
Garros, putting the Chennai-lad
in contention for becoming the
eight lucky loser to make it to
the main draw of 128 players.
Prajnesh, however, had
already confirmed his
participation for the Challenger
on Friday, and had, in fact,
boarded a flight to Italy when
news broke of his chance to
make the main draw.
Had Prajnesh not confirmed
participation in Italy, he would
have still had time to travel to
Paris to sign-in as lucky loser.
The Grand Slam rulebook
states that a substitute player
must “report to the Referee and
sign the Lucky Loser Sign-In
Record at least half-hour prior
to the start of the first match of
each day.”
Prajnesh Gunneswaran takes flight to
Italy as spot opens up in Paris
