Cultural programme held on 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao'
LG calls upon all to create conduciveenvironment for holistic development
of women & girl children
Addressing the
gathering, the Lt. Governor
remarked that various
Departments and agencies
have been organizing 'Beti
Bachao Beti Padhao'
awareness programmes
across the country, as there
is a need to change the
mentality of the society
towards girl children.
"Despite, 70 years of
Independence of our
country and this being 21st
century, women are still
being looked down upon,
whereas they are equally
important for the growth
and development of the
society", he said.
The atrocities meted
out to women/girl children
and the low sex ratio
witnessed in certain parts
of the country have
become a cause of concern,
but here in A&N Islands,
the situation is much better
when compared to other
parts of the country, said
the Lt. Governor. However,
the need to further improve
the sex ratio has been felt
here too, and efforts are on
by the Administration to
achieve equal sex ratio, by
conducting various
awareness programmes.
"Due to concerted efforts
and advocacy on gender
equality, recently, the
Islands have witnessed
improvement in the sex
ratio, which is a good sign;
and should continue", he
said.
The Lt. Governor further
stated that the 'Beti
Bachao-Beti Padhao'
scheme was launched by
the Prime Minister on
January 22, 2015 with an
aim to improve the
efficiency of welfare
services intended for girls
and to improve the sex ratio
in the country. "The
scheme has been
propagated in every nook
and corner of the country,
as there have been cases
of unfavourable sex ratio in
certain parts of the
country", said the Lt.
Governor. Along with other
States, the Nicobar District
in A&N Islands has also
been selected in the first
phase under 'Beti Bachao-
Beti Padhao' programme to
help improve the status of
girl children and several
awareness programmes are
being organized to achieve
the goal. Similarly, in Port
Blair and other parts of the
Islands, programmes to
create gender sensitization,
stress on importance of
higher education are being
held while zonal level
sports for girls are also
being organized to
empower girl children, the
Lt Governor said.
The Central/State
Governments, civil
societies, NGOs, media and
other agencies are also
playing important roles in
promoting the welfare of
women and girl children in
the country. The Bureau of
Outreach and
Communication and the
Song and Drama Division
of the Ministry of
Information &
Broadcasting, GoI are
creating awareness on 'Beti
Bachao Beti Padhao'
scheme among the rural
masses through various
outreach programmes to
achieve equal sex ratio, said
the Lt. Governor adding
that through such
initiatives, the entire
country is now being
awakened towards the
need for empowering
women/ girl children and to
ensure their safety.
The Lt. Governor
remarked that women

Man is subjected to
exploitation by his own race
socially, economically and
politically at times. Its not
Darwin's theory 'survival of
the fittest' that applies here
but a sense of compassion
and love towards fellow
human beings. Value of life
is not judged by the fact ,
what we have achieved in life
but by our actions. Sanitary
workers are regarded as
the most deprived sections
of the society and to uplift
their life we need to shoulder
the responsibility by
engaging ourselves into a
disciplined life in the efforts
towards waste management.
The municipal
sanitary workers are an
important asset of our
society. The noble work
done by them often goes
without any recognition or
reward. Without them, the
city would be filled with
unbearable stench. The
Sanitary workers are no
lesser than our soldiers
serving in difficult terrains.

Sanitary workers-custodian
of clean city
Seen here are the PBMC sanitary workers engaged in
their daily routine of cleaning up the mess we make.
The Safai Karamcharis/
Sanitary Workers help us in
keeping our environment
spic & span by subjecting
themselves to many
diseases. Every morning we
see them with brooms in
their hands and gunny sacks
lifting wastes and garbages
thrown by us. The wastes
produced in the city are
collected, segregated and
discarded by them at the
designated dumping sites.
Littering of garbage in the
open, drains, roads and
other public places does
cause lot of problems.
Engaging sanitary workers
to keep the city spic and
span is a cumbersome task
and to fix the whole burden
on these fellow human
beings is not at all justified.
People should come forward
and launch a movement
urging the city dwellers not
to resort to throwing
garbages at their whims and
fancies rather they should
articulate the need for safe
and proper disposal of
plastics, wastages etc. The
Swachcha Bharat Mission
launched by the Prime
Minister has changed the
mindset of the people to a
large extend.

Mohamed Salah was today named as the Football Writers'
Association Footballer of the Year for 2017/18 after scoring 43
goals so far in an incredible debut season for Liverpool. The
Egypt international narrowly topped the poll of the 400-strong
FWA membership ahead of Manchester City midfielder Kevin
De Bruyne, the margin understood to be less than 20 votes.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane was third. Between them, Salah,
signed by the Reds from Roma last summer, and De Bruyne,
who helped City claim the Premier League title with five games
remaining, collected more than 90 per cent of the journalists'
votes. Salah has scored 43 goals in 48 appearances in all
competitions this season and spearheaded Liverpool's push
towards a potential place in the Champions League final -- the
Reds lead Roma 5-2 ahead of Wednesday's semi-final second
