Description of Changes

TE Connectivity is proud to announce that on or about July 1, 2015 we will be introducing and going into production with a new universal contact on the modular plug family. Presently the TE Connectivity modular plug family utilizes two different contacts, one for stranded wire and another one for solid wire , resulting in two different modular plugs. In July 2015 this will change to a single version modular plug using a contact designed to be used on either stranded or solid wires . TE Connectivity will be discontinuing its present offering of modular plugs on or about October 1, 2015 depending upon inventory consumption. All present modular plug part numbers for both solid and stranded modular plugs will be discontinued and replaced with a new part number for the modular plug using the universal contact. Reason for Changes:

Product improvement.This significant engineering and tooling investment was undertaken based on the voice of the customer desiring only one version of contact and resulting modular plug to reduce inventory management and availability concerns. Additionally TE Connectivity development has insured that the new universal contact has equal or better reliability on both wire types. The new version has several advantages over the present modular plug. They are: reduced inventory management concerns replacing two parts with one, increased availability with reduced lead-times and increased reliability of wire-to-contact interface. There are no limitations or disadvantages to the new universal modular plug other than managing the transition phase from existing to new and the associated part number changes.There are no changes to the application tooling either for the hand-tools or semi-automatic machines. There are no changes to installation procedures.

TE Connectivity offers a new and improved version of its high-performance shielded modular plug, incorporating a slim-line boot supporting the highest-density applications. The transparent color eliminates the need of multiple colors for matching every cable assembly jacket color. Additionally, the new strain relief/shield provides 360° contact with the cable to offer increased strain relief and resistance to bending forces with minimum disturbance to pair-twist for enhanced performance. However, this new modular plug utilizes the same proven contacts, modular plug housings and performance-enhancing load bars as previous products. Also, the new modular plugs can be terminated with the same semiautomatic and hand-held tooling previously specified.

Summary: TE Connectivity is introducing a new version of the Shielded Modular Plug (Cat 6A, 6, and

5E EMT) with product availability on April 17, 2015.

1. What are the benefits of the new modular plug over the existing version?

The new version has several advantages to the new shielded plug. They are:

New Slim-Line Boot that supports high-density applications

The Slim-Line Boot is transparent in color so no need to match the boot to the patch cord

cable jacket and to inventory multiple colors

Innovative 3600 strain relief that

o Provides excellent pull and bending resistance,

o 3600 contact with cable shield providing superior shield effectiveness

o Minimum disturbance to pair-twist enhancing electrical performance

2. Are there any limitations/disadvantage of the new version?

For selected customers that are doing overmolding of boots, they would have to check the

overmolding process they are using with the new shield and potentially modify. We hope these

customers will see the benefits of the new design and change their patch cords to use the new

slip-on Slim-Line boot with the new shield.

3. Are the existing and new shields and boots compatible/interchangeable?

The new shield supports the same range of cables and conductor sizes. The modular plug body

and the load bars remain the same, so the new shield is compatible with present plug body.

However, the new Slim-Line boot will only fit the new shield and the existing boots will only fit the

existing shields.

4. Are there any changes to application tooling or installations procedures?

There are no changes to the application tooling either for the hand-tools or semi-automatic

machines. There are only minor changes in the installation procedures. A new revised Instruction

Sheet is available.

5. Availability and Price?

The new modular plug kits using the new shield/strain relief and the new Slim-Line boot will be

available April 17, 2015. While the new product offers significant benefits and advantages over the

present product, TE Connectivity will be offering the new product at the same price as the existing

product.

6. Samples?

Samples of the new modular plug kits and the Slim-Line boot will be available by March 27, 2015

via TE Connectivity’s E-Commerce Web Site.
