    Londons River Revealed

    Uncover secrets from the deep in ourexciting series of events running as partof the Festival of British Archaeology.Explore the archaeology of the Thames

    with two weeks of free adult and familyevents. Meet experts who will revealhidden histories of Londons river. Enjoyweekday gallery tours and talks and awhole host of family activities on theweekend of 1 and 2 August. Handle someof the intriguing objects found in theThames and find out just how they arepreserved. You can make your own boatsand Roman style lamps and learn aboutthe skeletons of people that lived andworked by the river.

    All these events and many more will betaking place at the Museum of LondonDocklands. From lectures on sunkenTudor ships to riverside tours, Iron Agestorytelling to paper boat making - theriver runs through the activities for allages. Our experts have fishy tales andforeshore finds aplenty, featuring allmanner of weird and wonderful waterytreats including coracles, mudlarks,

    elephant gods and whale-bones.

    Archeological DowsingMiddlesex and Surrey Archaeological Dowsers

    Saturday 18th July 2009 10.30am - 4.30pmTerrace Room, Gunnersbury ParkMuseum, Popes Lane, Acton, W3

    The Middlesex and Surrey archaeologicaldowsers will be locating and marking outthe sites of hidden buildings which mayinclude an ice house and a medievalbuilding. Dowsing can be used to assistarchaeologists in their work by quicklylocating hidden buildings etc. and markingthem out for further investigation. Thedowsing team will be locating andmarking out any hidden buildings in thegrounds of Gunnersbury Park, weatherpermitting. There will also be a talk anddemo of dowsing and information on whatthe archaeological dowsers are doing.

    Dr Damian Goodburn, the ancientwoodwork specialist, will bemaking reproductions of ancientwoodwork, archaeological artistswill help children make foreshoreinspired art for them to keep andthe TDP Foreshore Recording andObservation Group will be workingon the archaeology at Chiswickwith an information stall withimages and finds from the project.

    Adults and children alike will bedelighted to know that Punch &Judy will be back and for theyounger ones a bouncy castle.Browse a great selection of stalls,have a bite to eat from the BBQ, adrink from the Fullers bar or tea,cakes and ice cream. Relax andsoak up the atmosphere by the

    river whilst listening to our everpopular band Shenanigans. Thefun starts at 12.30 when the PierHouse and the bar open.

    pen Foreshore Sessions 25th & 26th July

    This annual event will centre around public access to the Thamesreshore at the Tower of London, the only time of the year when this isossible. The foreshore here is an outstanding archaeological resource,ith finds giving evidence for 2,000 years of activity at the site. Make no

    istake this is real archaeology, really from the Tower of London!elated activities (on dry land!) will involve the City of Londonrchaeological Society, Thames 21, Thames Discovery Programme, theoyal Armouries, the Port of London Authority and others. The eventakes everything as hands-on as possible, with real artefacts as well as

    eplicas, and a wide variety of activities relating not only to archaeologyut also ecology, river safety, armour and art. You can find out more aboute COLAS events on their website

    Foreshore access depends entirely on tidal conditions. Low tideccess this year is expected to be from approximately 10:30 am until2:30 pm on Saturday and approximately 11:00 am until 1:00 pm onunday. These timings are dependant on the tides and may vary.here will be a variety of activities on Tower Wharf between 10 amnd 4:00 pm on both days. In the interests of public, staff andolunteers safety, Historic Royal Palaces and its partners in thisvent reserve the right to vary times and access arrangementsepending on tidal circumstances. Access to the foreshore isrictly controlled because of the tidal nature of the river Thames.
