Impressive Rally... Ron the Greek had a hard time keeping up early, racing well in the back as Ultimate Eagle (Mizzen Mast)and Gladding (Sarava) exchanged blows throughpunishing early fractions of :22.26 and :44.55. Thehandsome bay began to make a visually impressive

middle-move down thebackstretch to reachcontention, then started toidle a bit. Jose Lezcano wentto work on Ron the Greek onthe turn for home, and theFlorida-bred began to re-rally.He hit the front in thestretch, and kept on findingmore to report home a much-the-best winner. “The lastthree races he has beenimproving,” Lezcano said.“His last race in Florida hewas racing a shorter distanceand the other horse openedup early and I couldn’t catchhim. He was really comingthe last three-sixteenths, but

the other horse opened up too early.” The 28-year-oldRodolphe Brisset, an assistant of five years to Bill Mott, made the trip to California for the Hall of Fame trainer.“There was a lot of speed in the race, we just wantedto stalk the pace and see what happens,” Brisset said.“[Lezcano] did very good to make a move on thebackside and give him a little break on the turn and hejust came running again, so it was a very good race.”Brisset continued, “This is my first time at Santa Anita.I came six months ago to Hollywood Park and we wonthe Shoemaker with Courageous Cat, so that’s twotrips to California and we won two Grade I’s, so I liketo come here.”

Private Purchase Pays Off... Co-owner Adam Wachtel told TDN earlier this weekthat he first tried to buy Ron the Greek as a 3-year-oldfollowing his impressive win in the 2010 GIII LecomteS. at Fair Grounds (TDN Feature). Apparently good thingscome to those who wait. Along with partner Nils Brous, the New York nativecompleted a deal to obtain a two-thirds interest in Ronthe Greek from breeder Jack Hammer last summer, andthe 5-year-old has done little wrong since. Transferred to Bill Mott, he finished second in a$75,000 optional claimer at Saratoga July 29, thenreceived some time off. He resurfaced with a five-length tally in Aqueduct’s Sunny And Mild S. Nov. 17,his first time getting his picture taken in ninesubsequent starts since the Lecomte. Ron the Greekadded another victory in the Queens County S. at theBig A Dec. 10, and punched his ticket to the Big ‘Capwith a strong effort in the Sunshine Millions.

FIRST UP...BARRETTS MARCH With Barretts launching the juvenile season Mondayevening with the March sale at Fairplex in Pomona andOBS, Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland=s counterparts not far

behind, the 2012 schedule hasbeen whittled down to mereweeks, providing bothadvantages and disadvantages tobuyers and sellers alike. AIt=s going to be a hectic sixweeks,@ said Wavetree Stables=Ciaran Dunne. AI don=t reallyknow if there is really any goodway around it. It seems asininethat we are going to hold fourselect sales between the firstweek of March and early April. Itseems that we are putting all ofour product on the market in avery short period of time. Nobodyreally wants to sell any earlierany more and there is a limit tohow late some of them want to

sell. Keeneland has their sale in conjunction with themeet, so that is pretty set.@ Eddie Woods, who consigned last year=s sales=topperBa colt by Pomeroy that brought $625,000--offered his perspective on the juggling of sales= dates, beginning with OBS=s decision to halt the OBS Februarysale three years ago to Fasig-Tipton opting to move itssale to coincide with the GI Florida Derby at the end ofMarch. AWe=re going to find out how all the change in thedates for the major 2-year-old sales will turn out,@ saidWoods. AHopefully, it will now turn into a 2-year-oldseason. It=s a buying season and spread over six weeksnow as opposed to three months like it used to be. Thedates has changed the whole dynamic. Now they havetightened everything up where there are only two weeksbetween each sale all the way through the Keenelandsale in April. It=s made things pretty hectic for everyone. We=ve had to expand because of the schedule, but itseems to have worked out okay so far. It will bechallenging to get to all the events in the shape that youneed to get to them, but we will go with the hand thatwas dealt to us and we will make the best of it. We=llsee what happens.@

Dunne, responsible for three of the top four juvenilessold at the 2011 renewal, indicated that, while oftenchallenging, the seemingly endless rearrangement of thejuvenile sales= schedule over the past few years hasrequired no small amount of adjustment, including bothbuyers and consignors. AIt probably didn=t affect us as it did some otherpeople,@ admitted Dunne. AWe have always sold atevery sale. The schedule has always been pretty tough, especially for buyers. People used to be concerned witha horses= gallop out, but the new >in thing= is that peoplewant to see them >prep-breeze=. In the past, people werein a position where they had to decide to stay in Ocalato watch them prep-breeze or if they were going tocome out here for the sale. Barretts had lost somepeople because of that, but buyers don=t have to makethat decision this year. I think from that perspective, there will be a few more East Coast people here thistime.@ Despite the inherent difficulties of the currentschedule, Dunne was quick to point out some of thebenfits granted to the sale given its position on the2012 schedule. AIt=s now the first sale of theyear, and everyone is a little bitexcited about it,A explainedDunne. AThe guys on the WestCoast don=t usually get theexposure that we do on the EastCoast, and I think they arepumped up about it. Instead ofthe sale being squeezed in themiddle somewhere, it stands outas the first now. The local buyerscan stay home, come out andlook at the horses at theirleisure.@ Regarding the larger cataloguefor 2012, Dunne added, AI thinkit may have also become a littlebit easier for some otherconsignors to come here now that it is the first sale ofthe season. So, I think Barretts may have gotten a fewhorses as a result. I think the biggest winner, given themusical chairs with the 2-year-old sales, is Barretts. We=ll just have to see what transpires in the ring.@ In light of the challenges, many of the sales= mostactive and successful consignors make the pilgrimagefrom the east year after year. Chief among them, Dunneand Woods emphasized the importance of bringing theappropriate horse for the local market.

AFor an East Coast consignor, it=s a long way to comeand it is an expensive trip,@ said Dunne. AUnless wethink we have something that is worth hauling acrossthe country, we=re going to stay home. So they getsome really nice horses out here because of that.@ Woods, who has already seen a GI Kentucky Derbywinner come out of his previous 2-year-old drafts in theform of 2007 Keeneland April graduate Big Brown(Boundary), echoed the sentiment. AWe generally bring to California very good physicalsand then you can worry who they are by and out oflater,@ explained Woods. AWe generally select them onconformational attributes, except when you have ahorse like the Brother Derek filly [Hip 142]. She is a verynice horse and a beautiful mover, and more of a3-year-old type. We thought Brother Derek would bemore acceptable out there than anywhere, becausethat's where he did all of his best running. He was quitepopular, so I thought it was a good move to bring herhere.@ Woods added, AIt is the first sale of the year andCalifornia buyers have always been pretty active in the2-year-old game, so I thought it was a good spot tobring some really nice horses and kick off the game, soto speak. They might not be the very best, but thehorses we are bringing to Barretts this year are prettyclose to the best 2-year-olds we have.@BC Bossinakis

Louisiana racing commission needs to complete the

Bob Fortus, The Times-Picayune

AThe American Graded Stakes Committee, an arm of

Editor=s Note: Bill Oppenheim=s column on TOBA (Clickhere to read) in Wednesday=s TDN and TOBA=s reply inThursday=s TDN continue to generate comment from ourreaders.

After reading Mr. Koester's letter to the TDNregarding the TOBA's decision to not move forwardwith the banning of Lasix for 2-year-olds in gradedstakes this year, I had to comment--it got under myskin. If he thinks that it is the right of the public to havetelevised access into the barn of all trainer's KentuckyDerby day and show on television the injection of lasix, why isn't he calling for the television cameras to go intoall professional sports locker rooms before the gamesare played? Do they show those athletes gettingcortisone shots for pain? If so, do you really thinkeveryone would turn the channel? Sometimes I wonderif any of you have ever known any professionalathletes. Do you really know what goes on in othersports? If they implemented the drug tests that racehorses have to go through, we might not be watchinganything but knitting on Sundays. When are we going tostop pretending we need to follow the rest of the worldin what they do? I do not want to adopt rules andcommon practices such as eating horses, cats, dogs, rats, etc. as they do in these same countries that yousay treat the horses better because they are not gettinglasix on race day. Should I be regulated to have onechild, as is the law in China/Hong Kong? Oh, but theydon't give horses lasix on race day, they must besmarter than us and more civilized. And I have traveledthe world, and don't consider myself to be living in abox! Why is lasix always the blame (and unproven) forhorses starting less? Why couldn't it be that crookedhorses that had cosmetic surgery went off to thebreeding shed at three, instead of later when we figured out their soundness issues? Or that the economics ofracing have changed and it=s a lot smarter to run a horseless and wait for big purses than it is to run them oftenas they did in the past when the purses, were muchlower? The real problem, as I see it, is that a bunch ofolder folks don't want to change with the times andwant to go back to the past when they had the reinsand controlled things from their mansions. Sorry, it=s 2012, we have the internet and iPads. Wehave legalized gambling on other sports. Time to moveforward and stop the blame game.Cont. p14

Letters to the Editor cont.

Banning lasix is not the answer to bringing peopleback to the track, and fighting like children in highschool doesn't help. The people that complain that thepublic thinks the horses are Adrugged@ are the same people bitching and whining about the decline inthe popularity of the sport. Most non-racing industrypeople I speak to about horse racing don't ever bring upthe subject of drugs regarding the horses. And if theyhave they ask questions, they don't assume it's bad. When you read racing publications as the averagecitizen does not, all you see is infighting in an industrythat doesn't need it. It=s a good thing the averageperson doesn't read this stuff. They would be put off by the negativity that is spewed on a regular basis. It's starting to sound like a Jerry Springer episode. Andwho watches that? The TOBA took a stance that I agree with, they arenot playing the bullied victim or step child to the rest ofthe world. American racing is good and they stood upfor that!!!

--Robin Cardoza

The TOBA should not have shown fear in the face ofthe enemy. Modern day society will not tolerate gameday medication in their baseball players, football players,or bicycle riders. They certainly will not tolerate it in asport involving an animal! If we keep fighting thisrearguard action to keep as much medication as wecan, for as long as we can, there will not be a sport leftto defend.

--J.William Boniface

I have just resigned from TOBA also. We have 175 horses on this farm, and It is time for the ownersto stand up and not be bullied on the drug issue. Weneed to build a better fan base and breed sounderhorses. Drugs are the exact opposite of what thisindustry needs, and it is time to get rid of them.

California Report cont.

Santa Anita Third Declared No-Contest: A horse that broke through the gate before the startof Saturday=s third race at Santa Anita, a $32,000claimer going 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside turfcourse, resulted in the race being declared a no-contest(video). The field had been loaded when, just prior tothe starter springing the latch, Muny (Najran) brokethrough stall three. A split second later, the rest of thedoors opened. Amid the confusion, three assistantstarters held their horses, while three other horsesbegan racing. Those three naturally finished 12-3, withMr. Bossy Pants (Victory Gallop) edging Sky Cape(Najran) and Oak Key Why (Whywhywhy). Afterward, Santa Anita, in agreement with theThoroughbred Owners ofCalifornia (TOC), said it willdistribute purse money as though the race had been runwithout incident. Mr. Bossy Pants will thus receive the$21,000 winner=s share of the $35,000 purse, withSky Cape getting $7,000 and Oak Kye Why earned$4,200. The remaining monies will be divided amongstthe other four horses, with each getting $875. Alljockeys, trainers and owners will all be paid normalpercentages and fees according to where theirrespective mounts finished. All single-race monies wagered on the seven runnersrefunded. In making their ruling, stewards ScottChaney, Kim Sawyerand Tom Ward cited CHRB rule1544 b., which stipulates that if Adue to mechanicalfailure or interference, the majority of the field iseffected, then the race is to be declared a no-contest.@In addition to refunds on wagers placed on runners inthe third race, all third-race horses used in the PickFive, Pick Four, Pick Threes and rolling doubles wereconsidered as winners and those wagers were still live.
