Terms and Conditions

1 Bursary Eligibility

1.1 This form is used for payment to those trainees who are eligible for the core teacher training bursary (please refer to the education.gov website on the front page for further information)

1.1.1 You must be studying, at this university, a PGCE, School Direct (Tuition Fee) course that leads to a QTS award, or a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course. Payments cannot be made to trainees enrolled with other ITT providers.

1.1.2 You must hold the relevant UK or overseas equivalency to UK qualifications. 1.1.3 You must not already hold a QTS, and must be defined as an unqualified teacher. 1.1.4 You must not undertake any other paid teaching work. 1.1.5 You are eligible for only one bursary award whilst studying a teacher training course.

1.2 Trainees awarded a scholarship by the Institute of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Computing must attach a copy of their scholarship award letter to their application form. The University does not receive notification from the relevant Institutes of your scholarship award.

2 Attendance

2.1 You must be fully enrolled on your course or payments will be withheld. The following steps must be completed: 2.1.1 The online enrolment 2.1.2. Collection and activation of your student ID card.

2.2 Payments will be stopped for nonattendance, suspension or withdrawals from your course. You must inform the Education Programmes Office of your intentions to either suspend or withdraw from your studies. 2.2.1 If you withdraw from your course you must repay any bursary overpayment made to you. 2.2.1.1 You will be invoiced for any overpayment. 2.2.2 If you are returning to your course after suspension from a previous academic year. 2.2.2.1 Payments will resume after your last payment date 2.2.2.2 Please ensure you complete a new bursary form as resumption of payments is not automatic.

3 Bursary Award Notification 3.1 Trainees will receive a letter confirming their eligibility for the training bursary award once their details have been verified.

3.1.1 Notification is sent by email. Please ensure your contact details are up-to-date. 4 Bursary Payment 4.1 Standard bursaries are paid between 5th October and 5th July 4.1.1 Payments are made in advance for the month 4.1.2 Any entitled missed instalment payments will be backdated 4.1.3 You will be entitled to the bursary instalment payments for each month up to, and including the month in which you withdrew from your course, if you were officially still on the course at the time of the bursary payment date of the 5th of each month.

4 Bursary Payment (cont’d) 4.1.4 Payments will cease if a trainee discontinues with the QTS element of their course

4.1.5 Ineligible trainees must repay any payments made to them in error (due to bursary award ineligibility) 4.1.6 You must repay any overpayments made to you in error (wrong bursary rate awarded) 4.1.7 Bursaries up to £12k are paid in 10 equal instalments 4.1.8 Bursaries more than £12k will receive 10 basic instalments plus 4.1.8.1 The remaining balance will be paid as two enhanced equal instalments 4.1.8.1.2 The enhanced payment instalments will be on 5th February and 5th July.

4.1.8.1.3 You must still be on your course as of 1st January of the current academic year, to receive the 1st enhanced instalment on 5th February.

4.1.8.1.4 You must complete the course to receive the 2nd enhanced instalment on 5th July. 4.2 Payments are made via our payroll department and you will receive monthly payslips. 4.3 As non-university employees; 4.3.1 No PAYE deductions will be made as this incentive bursary is non- taxable, but may be treated as capital income. 4.3.2 Neither a P45 or a P60 will be issued at the end of your studies. Please ensure you keep your payslips for future reference. 4.4 The bursary award is non -taxable but may be used in assessing your income if you are receiving state benefits. 4.4.1 You are advised to contact your local benefits office to check if you may be affected. 4.5 Payments will only be sterling to a UK or Northern Ireland bank account. Please ensure that your bank details are correct – that we have: 4.5.1 a 6 digit sort code 4.5.2 an 8 digit account number. If in doubt – please contact your bank. 5 Bursary Usage 5.1 This externally funded incentive bursary is paid by the University to you on behalf of the National College for Teaching & Leadership. 5.2 It is the trainees decision how they intend to use this funding, for example: 5.2.1 towards your living costs 5.2.2 towards your tuition fees. We cannot directly offset this bursary against your tuition fees. If you select this option, you must arrange to pay your tuition fees of £9000 to the university as either: 5.2.2.1 a ‘self-payer’ or 5.2.2.2 a ‘split payer’ if part self-payer and SLC or Sponsor funded 5.2.2.3 Tuition fees can be paid in instalments after an initial payment of £2000 is made at the start of your course. The remaining balance of £7000 can be paid by either : 5.2.2.3.1 Direct debit (in 3 instalments) 5.2.2.3.2 RCP (recurring card payment by debit or credit card)

5.2.2.3.3 3 equal termly instalments or 7 monthly instalments (requires agreement with the Righton or Crewe Finance Service Centres)

5.2.2.3 All tuition must be paid in full by the start of the Spring term 5.2.2.4 Alternatively, you can apply for the maximum tuition fee loan amount from Student Finance England at www.gov.uk/browse/education/studentfinance to cover payment of your tuition fees. 5.2.2.4.1 You can also apply for a maintenance grant and a maintenance loan. 5.2.2.4.1.1 The tuition fee and maintenance loans are repayable at the end of your studies: once you are earning.

6 Qualifications 6.1 The bursary rate you are awarded depends on your qualifications

6.1.1 Part credits for (incomplete) Masters of PhD courses cannot be taken into consideration. 6.1.2 Exceptional factors (e.g personal circumstances) cannot be taken into consideration. 7 Completion of Course 7.1 You are expected to seek a teaching post in England upon completion of your initial teaching training course, if you are in receipt of this bursary and undertaking a designated route to (QTS) Qualifies Teacher Status. 8 Personal Details 8.1 Finance must be notified separately of any changes to your 8.1.1 Names 8.1.2 Bank details 8.1.3 Address details These changes effecting your bursary cannot be amended via the Enrolment/Student Records System 9 Student Travel

9.1 Trainees in receipt of the training bursary are unable to claim, from the university, travelling expenses for school experience placements from their home address to their school placement. This bursary covers all your travelling costs.
