Upon arrival deputies found Jason Sher- man, 38, with a knife wound to his left side. Sherman, who lives in Mill City, told deputies he was sitting on the hood of his vehicle in front of his home when a small group of people came walking by. A ver- bal argument erupted between Sherman and members of the group. One male of the group, identified as Matthew Jeffrey Sears, 29, also of Mill City, threatened to shoot Sherman. At this point Sherman ob- tained a baseball bat from his vehicle for self-defense. Two females in the group be- gan pushing and hitting Sherman at which time Matthew Sears used a knife with a blade 3 to 4 inches long to stab him in his left side. After the stabbing the people in the group, including Sears, fled the scene on foot. Deputies searched the area for Sears but he was not located at that time. According the victim, that prior to the attack on him, Sherman had witnessed the females from the group engage in an altercation with his neighbors. The fight escalated to a point that Sherman handed the phone to his twelve year old daughter instructing her to call 911. The group then passed by Sherman’s home, where Sears, while reaching into his pants pocket, threatened to shoot Sherman. Sherman re- ports he then grabbed an axe handle from his car, an object he keeps there to prop the hood up, and held it up in defense. (he denies having a baseball bat.) The females from the group then began striking Sher- man in the face, backing him up his front walk. At that point he saw Sears approach from behind the women and felt as if he had been punched in the side. The group ran off whereupon Sherman discovered he had been stabbed. A neighbor came running to attend to Sherman. Medics from Mill City Fire and Lyons Fire Departments responded to the scene. Jason Sherman was transported to the Stayton Hospital where he underwent sur- gery for the stab wound. The knife dam- aged eight inches of muscle tissue, but managed to avoid internal organs. Sher- man, an unemployed construction worker and single father, was scheduled to start a new job with a flooring company this Monday, but was able to due to the in- jury. He has no medical insurance. Sherman moved to Mill City with his daughter Cheyenne just this past May for the affordable rent and to be nearer his family who lives in Gates. “It’s a nice community, I like it here. This has me pretty shook up though. This sort of thing happens all the time in the larger cities, but you don’t hear about it because it’s more common place, I just want to keep my daughter safe,” he said. On July 14 at 11:26 a.m. Linn County deputies located and arrest- ed Matthew Sears in Mill City. He is currently lodged in the Linn County Jail. On July 16, an arraignment was held and Sears was charged with as- sault in the 2nd degree. Deputies are continuing the inves- tigation. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office was unable to substantiate or discount the story as told by Mr. Sherman. Mill City man stabbed, suspect in jail Matthew Sears. Photo courtesy of OSP. The current status of the Santiam Canyon School District is difficult to track as changes continue week by week. On June 27, in a special board meeting the 2012--13 budget was passed to meet the state appointed June 30 deadline. This may likely change, however. According to Dan Lemke, the Board Chairman, “a budget document is a best guess, it’s fluid, and subject to change throughout the year.” Issues surrounding fairness in insurance cov-erage and perks offered to the “confidential” employees was brought up, with promises from the board to investigate further. has been busy accept-ing resignations from staff members and searching for an interim superintendent. Steve Nielsen, the district budget direc-tor announced he will be leaving his po-sition, and accepting the role of business director at the Corvallis School District. Nielsen has worked with the district for 11 years, and has seen many changes. “I’m excited for the opportunity, but also sad to leave here. It’s bittersweet,” said Nielsen. Nielsen’s move came to many as a surprise, as his leadership and dedication was well respected during the recent budget crisis. The board also accepted the resigna-tion of Nichole Scholz, the Agricultural Instructor and advisor of the successful and popular Future Farmers of America club at Santiam High. Scholz, who was unable to be reached for comment, accepted a position at Ma-dras High School. The hiring committee has been dedicat-ing countless hours to pouring over the twenty applications of candidates for the interim superintendent position. The board will be meeting with the can-didates next week for interviews in an executive session with the goal of having the new superintendent begin employment August 6. “We have a lot of good can-didates here to choose from, I was surprised at the number and quality to choose from. I’m confident we’ll find the perfect match,” said board member Ar-nie White. “It will be nice to have someone from the outside come in with a fresh set of eyes- new thoughts

and new ideas- but more importantly help be visionary for our future,” said Steve Nielsen. When asked if they were working over-time in the search, the volunteers chuck-led. “Fishing is good from what I hear,” said Dan Lemke. Lots of moving still has to happen be-fore September 4, the first day of the new school year. The library has been moved and consolidated to the Mill City cam-pus, and now is in full function, opened on Tuesdays and Thursdays to the pub-lic. This Saturday, July 21, there is an-other moving party. The classrooms at Gates are packed and ready to go. There are about 10 classrooms all boxed up, plus their furniture, to be loaded up and moved to the new Santiam Elementary in Mill City. The plan is to meet at Gates Elementary Saturday at 9 am with pick up trucks, trailers, hand trucks, screw drivers and strong arms. Call Roseanna at 503-897-2368 ext 25 if you have any questions. The plans for moving the playground equipment from Gates Elementary to Mill City is in the making also. Please call board member Arnie White to help. 503-897-3338.

John Neal Park is a family friendly and all-abled accessible destination. Nestled on 30 acres in the heart of Lyons, this treasure is abundant in wildlife. Watch for nutria, beaver, blue heron, turtles and other animals. Geese and ducks will flock to your feet if you take a bag of cracked corn feed them. (You can pick up the feed at True Value in Mehama) The ½ mile Beaver Trail skirts the edge of the ponds winding through trees and over picturesque foot-bridges. Creeks filled with lily pads and beaver chewed sticks line the edges of the stroller, wheel chair and bike friendly gravel paths. In addition to trails, John Neal Park of-fers camping, pond fishing, river access and playgrounds. If you’re looking for a kid friendly place check this one out. Your kids are going to love it!Getting There: From Mill City, travel west on Hwy 22 approx 7 miles to Me-hama. Turn left at the double blinking light onto Main St and proceed approx. 1.4 miles. Just past the fire department,

turn left onto 13th St and travel another ¾ of a mile into the park. You will see a couple big ponds and a swing-set on your right. The trail begins be-tween the two ponds and ends up in the park itself where picnic tables and public restrooms are available also.

This is a recipe for getting rid of those pesky ants that come every spring and summer. Mix up the solution, pack cot-ton balls in a jar cover, put the solution on and they will be gone.Ingredients:1 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons boric acid (available at Mill City Pharmacy), and 3 cups warm water.Directions:1. Mix the sugar and boric acid well.2. Add the warm water slowly, mixing all the while so it won’t be too lumpy.3. Store in a jar until ready to use.4. When ready to use, put cotton into the

top of a jar lid to fill it and then saturate the cotton to the top.5. Place it in the location where needed.6. Note: This solution will keep for a long while. A good technique is to drip a drop or two over the edge of the lid to rest on the counter so the ants will find the solution sooner. It sometimes takes a little while for them to find it, but find it they will. When they do, do not disturb them as they drink. They will hang over the edge of the lid and drink for a while and then take it back to the nest killing the colony. Almost overnight they will be gone.

An unusual sighting last week was a five inch turtle sunning itself in DeWitt Canyon. It was on a branch just above water level, and had all four legs and neck with head sticking out gather-ing rays from the sun. Usually, all the turtles live in sidewaters, where the temperature is warmer. This may have been a wild native turtle, or it may have been an escaped pet. Because it hid af-ter seeing us, perhaps it was wild. In the same area, we have recently seen eagles and osprey. There are certainly lots of steelhead in a few locations. A few salmon are also hanging around many of the deep holes

and drifts. Big trout occasionally rise to hatching caddis and stone flies. Most of the trout are feed-ing on nymphs and crawdads. We did have an aggressive 11 inch trout attack a 3 inch spoon, which was more than a mouthful. River temperature is warming up, and fish like different river sections dif-ferent times of day. Fish that like the Mehama area in the early morning will want to swim upstream to get in colder water as the day wears on. Fish that are recently arriving from the Willamette will be in a hurry to swim through the lower river in order to get to better con-

ditions in the upper river. Quite a few raft and kayak people are enjoying the river, and most of them put in after 10 o’clock in the morning. They usually put in at both Packsaddle and at the Mill City Bridge. It is easy for anglers to avoid them by adjusting their fishing time during the rush hours in selected locations. Bruce later married his wife Minta, of 24 years in Dallas,OR. They raised their family, two boys and two girls in Mill City,OR. Bruce and his family spent their time hunting, fishing, and camp-ing throughout Oregon. One of

our favorite memories is waking up on Saturday morning to a big ol’ breakfast, he always made sure to make enough for all the neighborhood kids too! And on Sunday you could always count on Bruce to have a special pot of beans ready on the stove. Bruce worked at Phillip Indus-tries for 17 years. He then later felt fortunate to have worked along the side of his two sons for River City Excavation driv-

ing truck, where they shared lots of good memories in the hot sun. This last year he spent driving truck for A&B Septic in Albany,OR. There was nothing Bruce loved more than hanging out with his fishing buddy Brayden.(oldest grandson- the fish slayer) He showed him all his favorite fish-ing holes and how to reel the big ones in. Bruce always talked about the days he could teach all
