Corporate Social Responsibility
Tata Consultancy Services‟ (TCS) commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) stems from the Tata Group‟s abiding concern for society and environment. A concern that is captured in the words of the Founder, Jamsetji Tata: “In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in our business, but it is in fact, the very purpose of its existence.” Corporate Social Responsibility is integral to the sustainability of a company. Sustainability is a state of „being‟ and not a state of „doing‟. It is a state of being in balance between Corporate Economic Responsibility (CER) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). When the company is economically responsible, profits are earned ethically, due diligence is deployed all through the supply chain and human resources are nurtured. When the company is socially responsible, it undertakes programmes for communities where it operates and which are affected by its business while contributing towards nation building at large. Within CER and CSR, all stakeholders of the company are considered. When both CER and CSR are in balance, the company is a responsible corporate citizen and its business is sustainable within a socio-economic system. The guiding principle of TCS‟ CSR programmes is “Impact through Empowerment” where empowerment is a process of strengthening the future today so that risk is minimized, value is created and certainty is experienced. Empowerment results in enabling communities and people to take a lead in their own lives and improve their well-being. TCS strives to ensure that communities engaged with us through our CSR initiatives also experience certainty in their lives. The core themes for TCS‟ CSR programmes are:
Education
Health
Environment
The choice of education as a theme flows from TCS being in the knowledge domain. Similarly, attention to the cause of health acknowledges that health is a vital precondition for promoting the social good. Concern for the environment is a global cause, which demands the attention of all. Themes are established centrally for adoption or adaptation across all geographies. TCS has chosen the following channels to drive its CSR initiatives:
Developing innovative solutions to address large-scale societal problems through utilizing its IT
core competence.
Volunteering on projects that address the felt need of communities in which TCS operates, while
aligning with the core themes of TCS CSR.
Participating in community development programmes championed by its clients.

Partnering with select Non-Government and Civil Society Organizations.
Support of large scale causes such as disaster relief or, any other cause as determined by the
Corporate CSR Council.
TCS nurtures people and planet wherever we operate. In India particularly, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) paradigm has matured to the use of core competencies. While volunteering by employees is a strong component in CSR at TCS, the company also utilizes resources and manpower in using core competencies to address developmental issues. As a global company, TCS geographies around the world are encouraged to identify target beneficiaries in line with needs in their locations, while at the same time aligning with the corporate CSR perspective.
