Chopper lands on UNTHSC campus to demonstrate emergency transportOn Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, a medevac crew landed their helicopter on the lawn of the Medical Education and Training (MET) building.

Fortunately, the chopper’s visit wasn’t in response to an emergency: the well-planned visit gave future health care providers an up-close look at how collaboration saves lives in emergencies.

“It’s great to see how they support life while in the air,” said TCOM second-year student Kimberly Lacson, referring to the PHI Air Medical chopper’s set-up. “It’s an important aspect of emergency medicine to be able to transport quickly.”

The gear aboard includes IV pumps, catheters, intubation equipment, oxygen, and intra-bone infusion drill to inject fluids or medication into bone marrow, as well as a stretcher or “sled.”

“We can carry anyone from 10 pounds or 30 days of age, up through geriatrics,” said Flight Nurse Susan Smithwick. “We once carried a 550-pound patient.”

in addition to Smithwick, Flight Medic Jacob Long and Pilot Kevin Gagnon answered student questions about emergency flight operations and care.

“Collaboration is important because mutual respect and communication are

the best things for the patient,” said Gerald Friedman, DO, Faculty Advisor to the TCOM Emergency Medicine Interest Group and TCOM Director of Medical Simulation.

The event was arranged by students with the Emergency Medical Interest Group (EMIG) in support of UNTHSC’s collaborative and interprofessional efforts. In the new “Flight Ride Out Program,” EMIG members can experience air medical medicine by flying as observers with PHI or CareFlight.

Spotlight on …

Michael Williams, DO, MD, MBA, TCOM ’81, Interim President of the UNT Health Science Center

A Fort Worth native, Dr. Williams, 58, served on the UNT System Board of Regents prior to being named Interim President of UNTHSC on Dec. 21, 2012. He has served as CEO of Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas, since 2008.

In January, Dr. Williams spoke to faculty, staff and students at a Town Hall meeting. A few excerpts:

On His Role: “I’ll continue executing on the strategic plan as approved by the Regents. We will continue our focus on education, research, patient care and community engagement. We also have a number of important initiatives that I will continue to pursue with all the vigor and energy I have.”

On the Potential Merger of UNTHSC and UNT Denton: “Merger talks have been tabled for the foreseeable future, so it’s not an issue. I’m not even thinking about it. That’s not why I’m here.”

On the Possible Addition of an MD Degree Program: “We have one of the nation’s leading DO programs, and now the potential to grant an additional degree. But, for some reason, there’s a perception that it’s an either-or choice, which isn’t the case. I don’t see how adding an MD granting program could in any way diminish the decades of DO degrees we have granted. I have already had a number of constructive meetings with leading DOs across the state and will continue to talk with alumni, with the DO leadership in Texas and with TOMA to find a collaborative way to work on this in order to better serve the needs of Texas.”

On His Position as Interim President: “The interim role is no guarantee that I ultimately will get the job, and I understand it will be a competitive process. However, I have told the Chancellor that I want to be a candidate for the permanent position and will pursue it with everything I’ve got.”
