It’s about that time. Time to put the ice scrapers in the trunk and get out the

umbrellas. Time to put away the sleds and tubes and break out the bats and gloves. For many spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. For me, March is all about anticipation.

I can’t wait for warm summer nights driving with the windows rolled down to an ice cream stand for a sundae or watching a double feature under a beautiful clear night sky at the drive-in. I’m excited to turn off the heat in my house and sleep with a summer breeze blowing through my open windows. I get a smile on my face just thinking of sunny afternoons at a ballpark or watching my favorite bands while lounging in the grass at an amphitheatre. I’m looking forward to the crack of hard line drives over the fence and the smell of fresh cut grass and burgers on the grill.

But, until then, the simple pleasures of not waking up 15 minutes early to scrape ice from my windshield and not having to stomp snow from my boots every time I come home will do.

It’s been a long, cold winter and it’s time to start getting our yards cleaned up, the grill back on the deck and the salt washed off of our cars.

March surely has more to offer than just being a rainy segue to the warm, sunny summer months. Soon we’re going to hear local fisherman telling fish-tales of all the giant bass they’ve been reeling in at local fishing holes. And, of course, all of the basket bingos and ham dinners at churches, rod & gun clubs and volunteer fire companies bringing people together as well as the special fellowship that Lent brings to our communities.

I’m trying to learn to slow down and notice all the wonderful things around me. I hope everyone stops for a minute and, although it might be pouring down rain, takes time to appreciate the beauty that comes with every season. “Be here now” is a Buddhist saying about appreciating the moment and I think we all need to learn to stop, look around and appreciate the splendor all around us even if we would rather be laying on the beach instead of sloshing though rain puddles.

33Cub Scout Pack 201 Holds Pinewood Derby

On February 27th engines were roaring as Cub Scout Pack 201 held their annual Pinewood Derby. Pack members along with family and friends gathered in the fellowship hall of St. Paul’s UCC in Indianland to race their unique cars fashioned from blocks of wood. The five winners will represent their pack at the North Valley District Competition at Springhouse Middle School on March 26th. The 1st place winner was Cameron followed by Zachary, Micah, Craig and Brendan. A trophy was awarded to Julian for most stylish car.

To participate in this effort, the Northampton Area Public Library, 1615 Laubach Avenue, Northampton is sponsoring a family storytime featuring Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job by Stephen R. Swinburne, “encouraging young readers to guess which shoe matches which job.” This storytime will take place on Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. Please join us for stories, games and activities.

Children’s Book Week is the national celebration of books and reading for youth. Celebrate the love of books at the Northampton Area Public Library by participating in our Family Story & Craft. This program will take place on Thursday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. or 6:00 p.m.

Bringing your pup into the vet clinic doesn’t have to be a scary thing. When pups come into our clinic we want them to leave in a better emotional state than when they came in. Our ultimate goal is to have adult dogs that drag their owner in, instead of having the owner drag their dog in. Overall we have been pretty successful over the last 20 years. Most of the dogs that started out as pups at our clinic, do drag their owners into the clinic.

There are things that you can do to help make your pup or dog’s experience even better. By working with your pup on these simple behaviors their experience at the vet clinic should be like a walk in the park, instead of a drag down misery lane.

Touch- a simple thing that is so important. Of course everyone touches their pups and loves to hug and hold them. It is important that your dog is comfortable being touched anywhere and everywhere. Yes, everywhere that includes the unspeakable places such as under the tail. Bottom line is if they lick it or scratch it in public it is fair game for us to touch it.

We will also need to examine and touch their eyes, ears, toes/nails, tail, and mouth including opening it up and looking in. These are often sensitive as well as common problem areas where we need to administer medicine. If your pup is used to being touched in these places then the exam should not be frightening for them. If they are painful or having problems and they are already comfortable with people touching these areas it is a lot easier on everyone. Otherwise it will require us to teach them to allow us to touch them while they are painful; this can be a very challenging task for us and very frightening for the pup.

Handling by strangers, taking treats and letting

them hold your pup, helps to socialize them. 20 cookies by 20 strangers before 20 weeks of age, is a good rule of thumb.

Tight hugs should mean good things. Hugs are not natural for dogs; in case you didn’t notice dogs don’t hug other dogs. Hugging is a human thing. Most of the time in our clinic we try to minimize restraint as much as possible. Occasionally there are times when we will need to hold your dog tight for a certain procedure. Teaching your dog to be comfortable with this in advance will reduce his stress during the procedure.

Stand still- sounds easy, but for some pups, I think they’d rather have their teeth pulled!

Many times when doing an exam I like the dog to be in the standing position. It also enables me to look for structural discomfort as well as see and feel abnormalities from left to right. Standing still also makes it easier for you to apply topical medications on your dog’s back. This very easy trick helps during bath time, attaching a leash, grooming and when you stop to chat with a friend on a walk.

Krysta Hankee Scholarship Fund

Family, friends and LCCC staff were on hand to honor Krysta’s memory. The plaque recognized all of the students who have been awarded Hankee scholarships for LCCC. Schoonover is currently enrolled at LCCC in the Nursing program. She is from Emmaus High School’s Class of 2010 and will graduate from LCCC in 2013. The next recipient of LCCC’s Krysta Hankee Memorial scholarship will be chosen in April 2011.

If you already filed your federal tax return and are due a refund, you have several options to check on your refund. Here are eight things the IRS wants you to know about checking the status of your refund:

1. Online Access to Refund Information Where’s My Refund? are interactive tools on http://www.irs.gov and are the fastest, easiest way to get information about your federal income tax refund. It’s quick, easy and secure.

2. When to Check Refund Status If you e-file, you can get refund information 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of your return. If you file a paper return, refund information will generally be available three to four weeks after mailing your return.

3. What the Online Tool Will Tell You Once you enter your personal information, you could get several responses, including:

Acknowledgement that your return was received and is in processing.

The mailing date or direct deposit date of your refund.

Notice that the IRS could not deliver your refund due to an incorrect address.

4. Toll-free Number If you do not have internet access, you can check the status of your refund in English or Spanish by calling the IRS Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954 or the IRS TeleTax System at 800-829-4477. * Size up your space - When plotting out the size of your garden, you'll want to be sure it's big enough to yield a good harvest to make your efforts worthwhile. But if you're limited on yard space - or have none at all - you can grow vegetables and herbs in containers on a deck, terrace, balcony or even on the windowsill.

* Let the sunshine in - Your plants need plenty of sun - at least six hours a day. A sunny and open location is your best bet for producing a plentiful harvest.

* Pick your plants for your plot - Grow vegetables that are expensive to buy in the grocery store or at the farmer's market, such as tomatoes and peppers.

A tried-and-true prolific producer, the Bonnie Original Tomato, was developed exclusively for Bonnie Plants in 1967. They come in

environmentally friendly, biodegradable pots that you plant right into the soil. Recent trials, planting five of these tomato plants in 25-gallon containers, averaged 100 tomatoes each at an average of 37 pounds per plant. Another tomato that will tip the scales is Bonnie's Sun Sugar tomato, a yellow cherry type. Trial garden plants averaged 1,228 tomatoes each.

Basic Cake Ball Pops

Ingredients 1 box (about 18 ounces) cake mix

1 box (about 3.4 ounces) instant pudding mix4 eggs

1 cup water1/3 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup Creamy White Decorator Icing1 bag (14 ounces) Candy Melts

Lollipop Sticks

Preparation Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray two 8-inch or

9-inch round pans or one 13 x 9 x 2-inch sheet pan with vegetable pan spray.

In large bowl, combine cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, water and oil; beat at medium speed with electric mixer 2 minutes. Pour into prepared pans.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes for round pans; 35 to 40 minutes for sheet pan, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling grid and cool completely. Divide cake in half; freeze one half for future use.

In large bowl, use hands to crumble cake until no large chunks remain. Add icing; mix with fingers until well combined. Form mixture into balls. Chill in refrigerator at least 2 hours.

Melt Candy Melts according to package directions. Dip sticks into melted Candy Melts and insert into cake balls; let set. Wait until candy is completely firm before dipping the pops completely in melted Candy Melts.

TRANSLATIONHow many people know of Russel and Florance

Baver? Russel was born in 1908 and died in 1977. His wife Florence was born in 1911 and died in 1999. Many people remember them as school-teachers, but they are better known for their work to continue the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition and dialect.

In 1952 they along with others started the Bush-kill Fersammling. In the early years 500 people were in attendance. Just think, 500 people com-ing together to hear the dialect! If someone had not bought a ticket the previous year they had to put their name on a waiting list for the current year’s Fersammling. People could only get a ticket if a previous year’s attendee didn’t show up.

Later in their life Russel and Florence started the Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Culture Society in Lenhartsville. The society had a one-room schoolhouse and a building where they displayed books and items of interest from Dutch culture. When Florence got older she gave many of these items to Kutztown University. Today you can see her collection at the Pennsylvania German Cul-tural Heritage Center at Kutztown U.

From 1953 until 1964 Florence wrote a dialect column for a Nazareth newspaper. In that col-umn she reminisced about how people lived in the past and what her friends were doing to up-hold and honor Dutch culture and dialect. We are going to feature some of her columns in future issues of the Town & Country Gazette in coming months to honor Russel and Florence.

Consider Veterans Administration Benefits When Planning for Potential Long

Term Health Care NeedsIndividuals planning for or in need of in-home, as-

sisted, or skilled nursing home care should be aware of the availability of Veterans Administration Benefits to reduce the burden on their families, and even assist in the sheltering of the individual’s assets.

Of particular interest to those veterans, surviv-ing spouses or dependents of veterans, are “Veterans Pension” benefits administered by the VA. A veteran for the purpose of Veterans Pension benefits does not necessarily require that one have been deployed in a combat zone, or to have served during traditionally accepted times of active combat with enemy nations, as the time period for eligibility is set by Congress and oftentimes extends beyond the period of active hostili-ties. “Veterans Pension” benefits are not pensions in the traditional sense of the word, but rather, constitute a variable income supplement available to those veter-ans, or qualified spouses or dependents of veterans who meet certain income and asset criteria. The criteria to qualify for “Veterans Pension” benefits are signifi-cantly less stringent and burdensome than traditional Medical Assistance (aka “Medicaid”) benefits for skilled nursing home care, and may provide a valuable addition or supplement to asset planning strategies for older individuals.

VA Pension benefits provide an additional stream of income to qualified veterans. The general eligibility requirements are as follows:

A veteran is eligible for VA Pension benefits if he or she meets the following criteria:

1. The veteran has been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions, and

2. The veteran served 90 days or more of active duty with at least 1 day during a period of war (as designated by Congress – which may extend beyond the period of actual hostilities by a substantial amount of time), and

3. The veteran’s countable income and net worth are below the established thresholds, and

4. The veteran is permanently disabled OR5. The veteran is age 65 or older.A dependent or surviving spouse of deceased veteran

is eligible for VA Death Pension benefits, provided he or she meets the following criteria:

1. The deceased veteran was discharged under other than dishonorable conditions, and

2. The deceased veteran served 90 days or more of active duty with at least 1 day during a period of war (as designated by Congress), and

3. The dependent is the surviving spouse or unmarried child of the deceased veteran, and

4. The dependent’s countable income and net worth are below the established thresholds

Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) will host a Job and Transfer Fair from 10 am until 3 pm, Tuesday, March 29. The event will take place in new Community Services Center (CSC) Conference Center at the college’s main campus in Schnecksville.

(NAPS)—March is National Nutrition Month, and with this year’s “Eat Right with Color” theme the American Dietetic Association encourages Americans to include a colorful variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy on their plates every day.

“Adding a splash of colorful, seasonal foods to your plate makes for more than just a festive meal,” says registered dietitian and ADA spokesperson Karen Ansel. “A rainbow of foods creates a palette of nutrients, each with a different bundle of potential benefits for a healthful eating plan.”

Ansel offers ways to brighten up your plate with this quick color guide:

Green produce indicates antioxidant potential and may help promote healthy vision and reduce cancer risks. Fruits include avocados, apples, grapes, honeydew, kiwis and limes. Vegetables include artichoke, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, green peppers and spinach.

Orange and deep yellow fruits and vegetables have nutrients that promote healthy vision and immunity and reduce cancer risks. Fruits include apricots, cantaloupe, grapefruit, mangoes, papaya, peaches and pineapples. Vegetables include carrots, yellow pepper, yellow corn and sweet potatoes.

Purple and blue options may have antioxidant

Eat Right With Colorand anti-aging benefits and may help with memory, urinary tract health and reduced cancer risks. Fruits include blackberries, blueberries, plums and raisins. Vegetables include eggplant, purple cabbage and purple-fleshed potatoes.

Red produce may help maintain a healthy heart, vision and immunity and may reduce cancer risks. Fruits include cherries, cranberries, pomegranate, red/pink grapefruit, red grapes and

watermelon. Vegetables include beets, red onions, red peppers, red potatoes and tomatoes.

White, tan and brown foods sometimes contain nutrients that may promote heart health and reduce cancer risks. Fruits include bananas, brown pears, dates and white peaches. Vegetables include cauliflower, mushrooms, onions, turnips, white-fleshed potatoes and white corn.

Ansel reminds Americans to also include a variety of colorful whole grains, lean meats and fish and low-fat dairy with their meals.
