Always ProtectingYour Pennies

This spring has started well for us as we have become the first travel company

to receive the new Civil Aviation Authority Flight-Plus accreditation. This new

licence is the result of proposed reforms by the Government in order to offer

travellers more encompassing protection when booking their holidays.

As travel industry leaders in Customer Financial Protection, we are delighted Travel

Counsellors way of doing things has been recognized in this way. This licence validates

our approach to always putting our customers first, but it’s important to note that we always

have and still do protect much more than this.

On exiting ABTA eight years ago, we launched our Customer Trust in 2004 in order to

ensure that our Travel Counsellors could provide a full financial guarantee to their

customers. This meant that we were best placed to meet all the requirements for full

accreditation when the Flight-Plus scheme was introduced.

Travel Counsellors Managing Director Steve Byrne comments; “The new Flight-Plus

initiative still leaves a vast amount of travel outside of its scope. Our Trust covers these

weekend (2-5 June) and escape somewhere warm. I would love some ideas

about the best places to visit at this time of year, which are also suitable for

families (my children are 6 and 10 years old).

Mr Roberts, Oxford

“With June temperatures averaging at around 25°c, this is a great time to visit the Algarve.

Just a short flight from the UK, it has the most wonderful sandy beaches. There is a wide

range of accommodation and many hotels have kids clubs too. The people are lovely and

the prices are good as well. There’s lots for families to do including four water parks and

a wonderful zoo”

Sandra Burnley, Travel Counsellor, Leeds

“We are off to Dubai - as it’s not too hot in June! We are staying at the Royal Meridien Beach

Resort and Spa, which has many child friendly facilities and very welcoming staff. We

have also booked to go to Atlantis for the day. My 10 year old is swimming with dolphins

with Dad whilst my 6 year old and I enjoy the resort’s fantastic water park.”

“The Sani Beach Resort in Halkidiki would be perfect at this time of year. Just a short flight

from the UK, it boasts beautiful ‘child-friendly’ beaches and a wide choice of

accommodation. There is a good choice of restaurants and leisure facilities, including a

kids club and that all important spa for Mum! I have sent several families to the Sani Resort

and they have all loved it!”

On this 11 night round trip from Dublin you’ll be

taken on a whirlwind tour of the best of both

Northern and Southern Ireland.

Dublin Days 1 & 2 An UNESCO City of Literature, Dublin also boasts hip

shops, cool pubs and stacks of history making this a top

city break destination. Its vibe is infectious - sing out a

chorus and verse of Molly Malone on an open top bus tour

(not realising you already knew all the words by heart!)

sample the produce from the world famous Guinness

Storehouse and Old Jameson Distillery or try and get your

own creative juices flowing with a trip to Dublin Writers

Museum.

Cork Day 3 Today you move south to delightful Cork. Dubbed the

‘Venice of Ireland’, it is built on an island in the River Lee

and intersected by many charming bridges. Voted by

Lonely Planet as one of the best places to travel to in 2010,

Cork is cool and confident. Shop for local cheeses and

artisan breads at the historic English Market, learn about

before you cross the River Shannon by ferry to reach

Galway. This lively seaside town is a tangle of cobbled

streets that reveal lively pubs and excellent restaurants.

Stroll along the promenade to see the sun set over Galway

Bay or stand on Salmon Weir Bridge and watch the

fishermen reel in the day’s catch.

The 22 April 2012 marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day, when millions of us around the world will be urged to go green. So we thoughtwhat better way to mark this than to watch our carbon footprint and come up with the definitive self drive tour of the Emerald Isle. Of course, apart from helping to save the planet, self drive holidays also offer great value for money and flexibility too. Plus no luggage restrictionsmeans you can bring everything from the dog to the barbecue, even Granny!

contemporary art in the Glucksman Gallery or admire the

spires of the imposing Fin Barre Cathedral.

Killarney Days 4 & 5From Cork it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to Blarney and

its famous castle where tradition has it that those who kiss

the stone high up on the battlements will be endowed with

the gift of eloquence, or "the gift of the gab", as the locals

call it. Then on to Killarney, where you’ll spend the next

two nights. Dominated by an 800 year old Norman castle

overlooking the ancient streets, Killarney is a vibrant

city with a fascinating medieval history. It’s also a great

base from where to explore the awe inspiring 100 mile

Ring of Kerry (driving in a counter clockwise direction is

the best way to get the views). Boasting some of the finest,

unspoilt beaches in Europe, Iron Age forts and picturesque

fishing villages there’s lots to discover.

Galway Days 6 & 7 Today it’s on to Galway. The seaside town of Dingle, where

you can smell the sea as you watch the trawlers bringing

in the catch of the day makes a pleasant detour en route

1. Find Your Perfect BalanceThe graceful movements of the ancient art of tai chi are

reputed to balance the body’s yin and yang. Why not

improve your body and soul and take part in a free tai chi

class led by Mr William Ng (the qualified instructor that

put Tony Blair through his paces on his visit here!)? He

leads free tai chi classes three mornings a week outside

the Hong Kong Museum of Art in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.

2. Go For a HikeThere are dozens of walks across Hong Kong’s urban and

rural spaces ranging from 30 minute strolls to 100km long

distance treks. Favourites include the circular Peak Trail for

breathtaking views over Hong Kong’s cityscape, the sea

caves and majestic mountains on Sai Kung Peninsula and

the feng shui woods and lovely coastal paths of Lamma

Island.

3. See the Stars Located on Victoria Waterfront is the Avenue of Stars, Hong

Kong’s take on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (look out for

the statue of its most famous son, Bruce Lee). This is also

a great vantage point from which to watch the Symphony

of Lights, a son et lumière extravaganza across the harbour

front dubbed the ‘World’s Largest Permanent Light and

Sound Show’ that is put on absolutely free every evening

at 8pm.

4. Tantalise Your Taste BudsAs you can imagine Hong Kong has its share of Michelin

starred eateries that come with a handsome price tag. But

one of them, Tim Ho Wan, can be enjoyed from as little as

80p. Officially the world’s cheapest Michelin starred

restaurant, an average diner’s bill for a meal of these

celebrated dim sum is around just £3.50. And if you fancy

a cup of tea to round off your meal, head to the Lock Cha

Tea House where you can take part in a complimentary tea

appreciation class.

The best things in life are free (or verynearly!) in Hong Kong. We share ourfavourite activities in this Asian metropolisthat don’t come with a designer price tag.

Compact and accessible, a city at the crossroads ofwhere East meets West Hong Kong has long been afavourite destination for British travellers. It’sprobably one of those places you think you knoweven if you’ve never actually been there. But thinkagain. Yes, there are sleek skyscrapers, glitteringshopping malls and über stylish hotels but most ofthese are reserved for Hong Kong Island andKowloon alone. In fact, only 30% of Hong Kong isactually developed with the remainder made up ofgreen countryside, beaches and over 260 outlyingislands. So with minimal effort (and travel funds!)it’s possible to escape the heart of the city andexperience un-crowded beaches, traditional fishingvillages and soaring mountains. And even if you’reshort on time and confine yourself to Hong KongIsland and Kowloon, you’ll be surprised how manyof the city’s highlights are available for free.

SeventhHEAVEN

Here’s our pick of our seven favouritefree (or inexpensive) ways to experienceheavenly Hong Kong!

5. Culture on the CheapAll of Hong Kong’s 600 or so temples have free admission.

A visit to some of these provides a fascinating insight into

the region’s culture. Highlights include Tin Hau Temple,

Chi Li Nin Nunnery (a great example of Tang dynasty

architecture) and the richly decorated Lo Pan Temple (the

only one dedicated to the patron saint of builders!) Also on

Wednesdays seven of Hong Kong’s leading museums –

including the Science Museum, Heritage Museum and

Museum of Art can be visited for free.

6. Get on the MoveHong Kong has a wonderfully inexpensive transport

system to get you from A to B. One of the cheapest ways

to admire the harbour skyline has to be by travelling on

the Star Ferry between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon

(from 20p). The same fare will take you from one end of

Hong Kong Island to the other on the tram. Or for

vertiginous thrills, board the longest covered escalator in

the world for free and experience the cosmopolitan

atmosphere of SoHo. Elevating over 135m in height, total

journey time is 20 minutes but you can hop on and off as

you like.

7. Hit the BeachBeachfront properties may be the preserve of the rich, but

visiting the beach isn’t! All Hong Kong’s beaches enjoy

public access. Some of the best ones are Stanley Beach

(on the south of Hong Kong Island it’s a great option for an

afternoon dip), Lo So Shing Beach on Lamma Island

(highly rated due to its pristine clear waters and relaxed

ambience) and SilverMine Bay Beach on Lantau Island

(great safe swimming for families, plus you can visit the

island’s giant Buddha too!)

Fancy a splurge? If all these inexpensive past times have left you with

some holiday spends burning a hole in your pocket

here’s our top three ideas on how to best splash your

cash.

Have a flutterHong Kong’s Happy Valley racing season runs from

September to June. The perfect excuse to dress up

take a punt!

All Made UpThe home of the 24 hour suit, Sam’s Tailors has

outfitted a world of celebrities from Bill Clinton to

George Michael. No would be fashionista’s trip to

Hong Kong is complete without a visit here!

Defy gravityThe highest bar in the world, the Ozone, sits on the

top floor of the stylish Ritz Carlton Hotel. It’s a great

spot for some people watching whilst enjoying a

signature cocktail against the backdrop of Victoria

Harbour.

A five night stay in Hong Kong is available from £917

per person based on two people sharing a superior

room on a bed and breakfast basis at the four star

Cosmopolitan Hotel departing 05 May 2012.

Includes return flights from London Heathrow. Price is

inclusive of one free night and complimentary

Have kids, will travelIf you were thinking about throwing out the suitcase to make room for the moses basket, think again. We caught up with four of our Travel Counsellors, all veteran family holiday survivors (oops travellers!) to guide you through the maze of travel with little ones.

Yorkshire based Gold Travel Counsellor, Katie Chamberlain, and mum to Josh, 15, and Sam, 9. And Manchester based Travel Counsellors Karon Edmonds(mum to Alex, 5) and Nikki Pennington (mum to Gracie, 4, and Bailey, 2), together with West Sussex Travel Counsellor, Claire Horne (mum to Daniel, 7,and Maggie, 5) share their top tips below.

On your way!1. No journey is too long if you plan it right.

Nikki: “Both my children have little trolley cases that they each put in their favourite toys,

books and snacks which keeps them occupied at the airport and during the flight.”

2. The time of day does matter – do your research.

Claire: “Go for an early morning flight. That way by the time you have got to the airport,

checked in, had breakfast and boarded the plane, the kids usually fall asleep or at least sit

still!”

Settling in1. Short transfers are best.

Karon: “Try to avoid long airport transfers, this is the hardest time to settle tired little ones.”

2. Make sure you have some personal space.

Karon: “Try to get a balcony or a terrace with your accommodation. Quite often the kids

are tired in the afternoon and want to be inside out of the sun and we don’t! It’s also a

good place to camp out and enjoy an relaxing evening drink or even a meal when they are

asleep later on.”

Packing Smart1. Don’t overpack – less is more (in your bank balance at least!)

Karon: “Don’t fill your cases with nappies and baby food. You can get these items locally

and remember under 2s don’t get a luggage allowance so you’ll be using your own. Or

worse paying excess baggage!”

2. Hope for the best – prepare for the worst!

Claire: “Spread your things across each suitcase. That way if one case is lost, you’ll have

some holiday essentials in the cases you do have.”

Choosing The Perfect Trip1. Make sure your break has something to offer little ones.

Claire: “We always try to book somewhere near a water park as it is always a great day out.”

2. Involve older children in the planning of your trip.

Katie: “We each choose something we would personally like to do or see. The boys had

me paragliding in Dubai last year which is something I would have never have done but

we had great fun!”

Katie and the boys enjoy a Caribbean Cruise. Daniel and Maggie on the last leg of their journey to St Vincent.

Nikki, Gracie and Bailey hit the beach. Karon and Alex ‘Down Under’!

We’re all hearing more and more about how China is opening up to the West. So much so that specialist tour operator, Wendy WuTours, has even started selling five day long trips. But could you really pack in enough over a long weekend? We caught up withtwo of Oxfordshire based, Travel Counsellor Dawn Gascoigne’s customers, Helen Loggin and Jerry Wright, who embarked on a twoweek Chinese adventure last summer to hear more about the country’s highlights.

TC “So what made you want to travel to China?”

Helen “We’d never been anywhere in Asia, and China

seemed the obvious place to start. My partner, Jerry, was

really keen to see the place before it changed forever and

became more westernised. Another big draw was the

pandas – Jerry’s always had a fascination with them and

Chengdu Panda Reserve in South West China has the

largest population of these rare creatures in the world.”

TC “How did you enjoy seeing the country on a

guided tour?”

Helen “It was great. We got on really well with our group;

seeing the country in the company of such an interesting

group of like minded travellers actually enhanced the

experience for us. Our national guide was called Bruce

(after Bruce Lee). We were amused to meet several other

Bruces during our tour. (Apparently it’s a favourite choice

for Chinese men who need to adopt a name that tourists

can pronounce!) Joking aside, we really benefited from

their knowledge and expertise throughout our journey. And

it meant that we packed the most we could into our trip.”

TC “Did you have any preconceptions about the

place that were proved wrong?”

Helen “Yes! I’d visions of an austere, communist state. I

couldn’t have been more wrong. At night the cities were

alight with western neon signs. And young girls ran around

in the latest mini skirts and T-shirts with English slogans

(often mistranslated with some amusing results!)

Despite this it still felt very foreign. The parks had outdoor

gym equipment in them and it wasn’t unusual to walk past

an al fresco Tai Chi class. And far from blending in as ‘just

another tourist’ even in the most populated areas our little

group got some inquisitive stares. Our fellow travellers

were often approached by schoolchildren wanting to have

their picture taken with them. There was a real fascination

still to see Westerners.”

TC “What were your highlights of the trip?”

Helen “The terracotta warriors and the pandas; both were

just as good as we’d hoped but it was the smaller

encounters we had on the way that made them so special.

When we saw the terracotta warriors, we met the 80 year

farmer who found them. He turns up every day to sign

autographs! Similarly we’d no idea that the city of Xian

where they are located would be so beautiful. One of my

fondest memories is our cycle ride round its city walls.

Throughout the trip, there was always ample time to make

your own discoveries.”

TC “Was there anything that you weren’t prepared

for?”

Helen “The vastness of the country; the distance we

covered and the contrasts we saw along the way were mind

boggling. We started in cosmopolitan Shanghai. There was

so much to discover from the Chinese temples to the

riverbank promenade, The Bund, lined with 1920’s colonial

palaces to the incredible Shanghai Museum which houses

over 120,000 pieces of jade and ceramics. Our next stop

couldn’t have been more different. We flew over 600 miles

west to cruise the steep sided, verdant gorges of the

Yangtze River, discovering stunning waterfalls and hidden

limestone caves. After visiting Xian, home of the terracotta

warriors, and the pandas in Chengdu we finished our tour

in Beijing. This was something totally different again. The

monumental scale of the place was breathtaking and

matched only by the incredible sense of humanity. It’s hard

to put into words the sense of awe we felt as we walked

through the splendour of the Forbidden City (Imperial

Slow Boat to China? No longer – we find out how this country of contrasts can be visited in just five days.

Palace for over 500 years) and climbed the Great Wall of

China (well Jerry got further up than me, it is very steep

and you can buy the souvenir T-shirts at the bottom as

well!)”

TC “We hear a lot about the exotic nature of Chinese

cuisine. What were your experiences?”

Helen “Sampling the local cuisine was definitely a

highlight. Everywhere we went we were assailed by the

sights and sounds of colourful street markets. In Xian, they

roast walnuts instead of chestnuts, and this is one of the

aromas I remember from the trip. I’m a vegetarian and I

must say that all the food I ate was simply delicious. The

meat eaters in our group were equally appreciative

although their menu was a bit more eclectic than mine, if

they wanted it to be! I’ll never forget one lady in our group

ordering goose head (and giving it a go – although she

did leave the beak!) And on our final night, we were taken

to a restaurant where the fish tank was filled with the catch

of the day – bullfrogs!”

TC “The tour operator you travelled with, Wendy Wu

Tours, has recently launched a five day trip to

Chengdu. Would you ever consider visiting again for

a short break?”

Helen “Do you know I would? The flying time into

Chengdu is around 10 hours so comparable to Las Vegas,

which is often visited over a weekend. Chengdu was

interesting in that it was a totally un-touristy Chinese city,

with some wonderful street markets. Also, the Giant

Buddha of Leshan is near there. It stands at over 200ft tall,
