“Even before I started this degree I was interested in the work of the UNESCO organization because I’m really interested in international arts policy. Born in Israel, I am very excited about the recent hype about the Middle East; everyone’s talking about the Louvre and the Guggenheim opening in Abu Dhabi, in general it is very interesting to see what the Guggenheim is doing in terms of its global initiatives. I believe it is key today for an art administrator to have a very wide international perspective.”

Tali will graduate in May with a Masters in Arts Administration and then begin an internship at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

“Museums are great resources for the community. People may have a stereotyped image of what a museum is; but once you’re there and looking at all the different things that a museum actually contains and the different events and programs that it offers to the community, it’s a whole other kind of learning environment. It’s not just for students K-12; it caters to families, teens and adults as well as many other diverse audiences.”

Erika is graduating from Teachers College in May with a Master’s in Art and Art Education with a concentration in Museum Education. Prior to earning her degree, Erika received a Master’s in Elementary Education from the University of Scranton.

“My biggest take away is that good teachers never stop learning." I had the opportunity to work alongside two fantastic, veteran teachers during student teaching and what I saw in their classrooms was that effective teaching requires doing your homework: getting to know the students and their situations, figuring out how they learn best, and what they need from you as the teacher... I know I'll remain a student in my own classrooms.”

Gillian has been working with child immigrants and researching traumatic immigration. Esquivia-Cohen will be moving back to Colombia where she will continue this work as part of her Integrated Project by working with internally displaced children.

"As an educator you have to understand d i!e re nt c u l tu re s an d d i!e re nt backgrounds that people are coming from. You have understand the di!erent talents and how you can apply your teaching skills in a variety of ways... to try to take in as much understanding as you can."""""""""

Janice is graduating with her PhD in History and Education. She has been a piano teacher at the Emma Willard School for several years, and will continue teaching there. She is thankful that her time at TC has helped broaden her horizons and she is exploring di!erent ways in which history and music can be brought together. "

“… my professors and classmates have become, i f not f r iends, cer tainly companions in the challenges of education as we navigate into an increasingly uncertain XXI century. The advice, discussions, and conversations (and parties!) we shared... are forever with me as I step into my first classes… On many levels, TC is already part of what I call home.”

Guillermo, a PhD graduate in the Philosophy and Education program, will be" leaving TC with an empowered commitment to go on learning from everyone he comes across. Post-graduation, Marini plans to resume a teaching position at the School of Education of the Universidad Catolica de Chile.

“As much as we spend time talking about educational theory, classroom practice, curriculum development, and lesson content, this whole teaching thing really comes down to our students. "If you teach with your students as the driving force behind your practice, you're going to be okay. "Teaching isn't about me, it’s about the kids.”

Michael is graduating with his Master’s degree Teaching of Social Studies and has “loved every last minute of it.” Through the encouragement and support of his peers, instructors, and professors, Tillman feels he has found his place philosophically in the realm of social education and gained confidence as both a student and a teacher.

Mari Black|MUSIC EDUCATION Michael Tillman|SOCIAL STUDIES Daniel Mann|TESOL/AL"#ere are good e!orts being made by college programs to incorporate multi-style music, but we don’t know much about how college programs really a!ect students who want to become professional performers... I believe it’s important for someone to start documenting these issues from an insider’s perspective." I hope to continue this work that I’ve started with my dissertation and help build college programs for multi-stylists”

Mari is a multi-style violinist and has completed her dissertation concerning the college experiences of professional multi-style violin string players. She is graduating from the doctoral Music Education program.

“What makes humans special? We’re the only creatures that have the capacity for language. Why is that? How do we acquire language? What is the mechanism for doing that? For me, that’s interesting and can tell us a lot about the mind and what it means, simply, to be human…”

Daniel is pleased to be graduating with his Master's in Applied Linguistics. He appreciates the diversity of classes he has had the opportunity to take here at TC and believes they will ground his future studies. Mann will begin a PhD program in theoretical linguistics at the CUNY Graduate Center. Having been awarded full funding for the program, Mann looks forward to building an understanding of what it means to learn a language.

"I would" tell" aspiring teachers" to really $gure out what you want to teach, what your primary goal is, and then take everything you learn here in stride." #ere are lots of great ideas out there, but they don't always gel." Pick and choose what approach you're going to adopt as your own based on your personal compass." Form your own ideological stance on teaching and measure everything against that."

Marisa is graduating with her Masters in the teaching of English. She likes the student-centered approach of TC and wants to focus on teaching literature and writing to 7th-12th graders.

“Always acknowledging our limits and having humility about how much we know are an added bonus, as there is always more to know. It goes without saying that all of these qualities require sustained reflection; but it's more than that- educators need to be conscious of being reflexive rather than just being reflective, whereby feedback from our interactions with our community and our own reflective self evaluations are used towards making constructive change both within us as educators and as people and within the community that we are situated in. If I am able to teach this practice of being reflexive to students then i feel that i

have delivered one of my responsibilities as an educator and as a citizen."

-Razia Sadik | Art and Art Education

“Never give up easily. Allow time to reflect. For me, the most productive reflection tends to happen! incidentally, and when I am 'off-line'. Inspiration and insights often come when I am going about totally unrelated tasks... When your thinking gets nowhere, it means that your brain needs a reboot - take a road trip. Non-academic activities can be as much a source of stimulation as academic activities.”

-ZhaoHong Han | TESOL/AL

“You are completing a circle; today you close one door and open another.! !As you close with us to continue on, we wish you the best.!!We may not have prepared you the way you wanted to be prepared.! !You may have already found this out and, if not, soon will.! !What is opening up to you is a new a world and pathway of everyday practices that you will create as the years go by.!!What we hope you close this circle with is an idea of how to create knowledge and how to imagine possibilities; it is what we hope you will carry with you for a lifetime.”

-María E. Torres-Guzmán | Bilingual/Bicultural Education

“Ultimately, teaching is about listening. Thank you for making me listen.”

-Hansun Waring | TESOL/AL

Words of Wisdom“As you move on to a different path in your profession, carry these words around in your l ife luggage...Hold high expectations and show respect for every student, independently from color, race, or ability. Remember that they will be teaching you as much as you will be teaching them; and never stop being imaginative, you know it can be done!”

-Patricia Martínez-Álvarez|Bilingual/Bicultural Education

“As you graduate from TC, recognize that you join a proud heritage of distinguished alum who have been and continue to be leaders in their respective fields.  We hope that you will take up that challenge in the many journeys that await you!”

-William Gaudelli | Social Studies & Education

“I warmly encourage graduates to carry with them, wherever they go, the intense joys of learning they experienced here with their faculty and peers.! These joys will carry them through difficult times while also inspiring their future colleagues and students.”
