Page 1: TBL-1103 Technical Bulletin - Teledyne Marine · The Teledyne ODI Gross Alignment Funnel (GAF) can be used in conjunction with the Enhanced Latching Indicator (ELI) System to overcome

As Teledyne ODI approaches 100,000 NautilusTM and Rolling Seal Hybrid connectors deployed, we understand that ROV intervention time due to operator variability, and environmental conditions such as current and visibility, can significantly increase costs. Teledyne ODI now offers two wet-mate connector enhancements, designed to optimize ROV mating efficiency and reduce operator time, thus lowering total installed cost. The Teledyne ODI Gross Alignment Funnel (GAF) can be used in conjunction with the Enhanced Latching Indicator (ELI) System to overcome severe approach angles of ROV connectors during mating. Easily installed onto an existing NautilusTM or Rolling Seal Hybrid bulkhead mounted connector, the Teledyne ODI Gross Alignment Funnel significantly reduces ROV operator variability, ultimately resulting in faster mating/demating, and lower overall operator cost.

In many cases, mating is further complicated when the bulkhead mounted connector end is shrouded by a protective bucket or mounting plate, so the Teledyne ODI enhanced Latching Indicator presents visual mating indication closer to the handle area of the ROV NautilusTM or Rolling Seal Hybrid connector. When unmated, four high-visibility yellow indicators rest inside the handle and when a successful mate occurs, the indicators extend out. The Enhanced Latching Indicator is easily retrofitted onto NautilusTM or Rolling Seal Flying Lead Connectors already in the field. When used with the GAF, the ELI provides additional fine alignment registration.

The GAF/ELI System is Field Retrofitable. A bolt on system is utilized that reduces ROV mating times while protecting connector shell interfaces to remove opportunity for connector damage in mating operations. GAF prohibits severe approach angles to assure optimal alignment. The benefit—Lower installed cost and lower risk. GAF prohibits severe approach angles to assure optimal alignment

In 2009 Teledyne Oil & Gas joined with BP in studying operational variability on ROV interventions leading to significant variability in mating times and as a resulting by-product, to instances of ROV induced damage to connectors. The development of the GAF/ELI system focused primarily on removing these last operator variables from the mating process to lower mating times from as high as 45 minutes to more consistent mating times measured in single digits thereby reducing total installed costs significantly. By design the GAF/ELI system created a fine alignment mechanism working in conjunction with the Gross Alignment function to further remove connector to connector contact prior to complete alignment. This function eliminates the opportunity for connector shell damage during the mating process which in turn ultimately reduces program risk. The GAF and ELI system are now recommended and quoted with every hybrid connector, and are considered standard kit and best practice for the Teledyne Oil & Gas hybrid connector.

The Teledyne Oil & Gas hybrid wet-mate connector (without the use of the GAF and ELI) has a demonstrated history of reliability in approximately 170 subsea projects around the globe. Hybrid connector damage events that have been reported have been primarily due to issues surrounding ROV intervention. Recurrences of these events have been successfully mitigated with the advent and use of the GAF and ELI-truly a continuous Improvement initiative.

It is the position of Teledyne Oil & Gas that all personnel who are tasked with mating the hybrid wet-mate connector should be properly trained and familiarized with the Teledyne Oil & Gas Operation and Installation manual (O/I) for Hybrid Wet-Mate Connectors (D/N 10272) in order to prevent damage during mating and demating of connectors. This is especially important when ROV configured connections are to be mated manually as the process calls for precision mating operations associated with proper mating speed and considerable mating forces. The Teledyne Oil & Gas O/I manual, provides checklists for inspections of both the bulkhead plug and the OFL prior to mating of the connectors. These checklists should be utilized each time a connector is to be mated. This will prevent any damage from an OFL having rolling seals out of proper position or a damaged center actuator on a bulkhead plug.

Teledyne supports and will assist in awareness and technical training programs and training aids for all field and program engineering personnel, on request, as a function of our Field Service Support.

Teledyne Oil & Gas has been manufacturing its hybrid wet-mate connector since 1996, with over 4400 subsea hybrid wet-mate connectors deployed globally to date. Device reliability has been exceptional, with a calculated “Failures in Time” (FIT) value of 54.8 per billion hours with approximately 201 million in service hours to date. It is noteworthy that these deployments do not utilize the GAF and ELI, as these mating aides have only recently been made available.
