CAROL FORBES ROTH, the eldest of four children and daughter of JOHNBOWER and MARGARET (HOLLAND) FORBES, was born in San Diego, California.When she was seven.her father was transfered to the General Dynamicsfacilities in Pomona and the family moved there and then to nearbyClaremont, California. She grew up surrounded with puzzles of everysort, from jigsaw to crossword, and remembers her father giving thechildren word puzzles at the dinner table. After high school, it wasa natural step to attend San Diego State College(now San Diego StateUniversity) from which her parents, aunts and uncles had graduated.While earning her BA in Mathematics, she worked in the dormitory as aResident Assistant. A few months before graduation, Carol marriedSTEVEN J. ROTH, whom she had met in her sophomore year.

Steve's military duty with the SeaBee division of the Navy carriedthem up the California coast to Costa Mesa, Ventura and then in 1971to Santa Barbara. During these years Carol worked in the accountingdepartments of Ford Philco Aeroneutronics and Sears, Roebuck & Co. In1979, Steve and Carol opened the doors of their own business, AppliedInformation Systems, Inc. They provide computer services for many localfirms and also match pen pals for an I.T.T. sponsored program.

After their move to Santa Barbara, Carol joined the Goleta Newcomers Club which offered a choice of many activities. One of thesewas a group interested in Genealogy. Under Cathy Maddox's guidance,Carol began learning basic techniques. She and Cathy felt a need fora local society and with the help of a newspaper ad gathered 27 peopletogether to begin the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society. Carolserved as the first president and later as librarian and treasurer.Steve also contributed to the society; first his muscle (carrying thesociety's books between meetings), then his skills (with Dave Kirkwood'shelp he built the first bookcart), and always his patience.

In 1974, Steve and Carol adopted a son, MICHAEL JOHN. In his firstmonths he was in regular attendence at the Society's meetings. Now atage seven, he keeps his parents busy with soccer and T-ball games.

Besides her interest in genealogy, Carol also loves needlework ofany kind. She has combined the two, stitching an eight generationfamily tree for her parents. Carol also continues to add to her stampcollection which she began when eight years old. She also paints andtries most crafts. Puzzles still interest her and Steve calls genealogythe ultimate puzzle. The Roths are active in Trinity Baptist Churchand Steve has led a Bible study for couples in their home for two years.The family also enjoys camping and love exploring back roads in theirJeep.

At the July meeting it nas voted not to hold a meeting on the regular meetingdate, as it falls on the Labor Dayweekend, but to concentrate on attendance at theSeptember 19th workshop, scheduled to be held at 3740 State Street, Santa Barbara.

At the time of going to press announcement has been receivedof the second annual Summer Institute on Local History to be heldat the University of California - Santa Barbara. The program isdesigned,for teachers, staff members of historical societies andmuseums, volunteers, librarians, and citizens interested in thehistory of their community. Specialists in different aspects oflocal and community history are to be in residence at Santa Barbara for the Institute to give lectures, workshops, and demonstrations on new approaches and ideas in community history. The focusis upon the local experience in the Western United States, althoughthe Institute is not necessarily concerned with only Western history. The Institute is under the co-sponsorthip of The CaliforniaHistorical Society, The California Conference of Historical Societies, The Arizona Historical Society, The Nevada Historical Society, and The Utah State Historical Society. INGRID WINTHER SCOBIE, family and social historian, Del Mar,California, currently writing a biography of California congress-woman Helen G. LEONARD PITT, Department of History, California State University, Northridge, a specialist on ethnic history, heads the Urban Archives project serving all the San Fernando Valley and collects material on voluntary associations. Topic: Documentation and LocalHistory Research.

RICHARD ESPARZA, Director, San Diego Historical Society, whois a specialist on management and funding of historical societies,the energetic head of one of the West's outstanding historical organizations and was responsible for creating the new Ventura historical museum. BARBARA MARINACCI and LISSA SANDERS, co-editors in charge oflocal history, Windsor Publications, Los Angeles. They are jointlyresponsible for one of the largest publications programs (more than65 volumes schedules) on local history in the United States today.Topic: Editing and Publishing Local History.

SBCGS will hold a workshop on September 19th from 10:00 to 3:00.It will be held in the offices of Applied Information Systems, Inc.located between the Cattlemen's Inn and the Sandman Inn at 3740 StateStreet. Everyone is invited to bring books from home and care is beingtaken to protect books loaned to us. A copier will be available onthe premises. Norman E. ScofieldAnyone who has been pursuing his or her own family history for several

years has accumulated notebooks and folders full of genealogical data.Most of us have experienced difficulties and frustration in trying to

find specific items that we remember recording but have lost track of.Sometimes we may find outselves repeating a search because we have eitherforgotten the original search or can't put our hands on the results.

At the same time the siren song of miracles of data storage and retrieval performed by computers has caused some of us who have used themin our jobs to consider using them in our avocations.

The point of this essay is to consider the ways in which a computerprogram can assist an amateur genealogist in pursuing his hobby.

Let us first consider the various activities of the genealogist. Thereis research in primary and secondary sources in libraries and archives;next there is transcription, referencing and indexing. Then analysis andsynthesis, compiling individual data sheets and family group sheets -family history notes - lineage charts and ancestor tables and finally,publishing family histories and genealogies.

There may be no immediate substitute for legwork and copying the original data, although one may look forward to some day having what is nowon microfilm in the vaults of LDS in Utah in a computer data bank accessible to anyone with a personal computer in his home or community library.

It is in the various data copying, sorting, indexing and collationactivities that the genealogical computer program may enourmously enhanceour abilities to make the most of our available time.

One of the first uses of a computer is simply to store date and selectively print out items in any desired format. Next the forming of alphabetized lists such as indices of names or places or the formation ofchronological lists, has been increasingly used. See, for example, thenumber of computer indexes of the U. S. Population census publications.

Agreed that all of the above can be made available, what else can thecomputer do for us? The answer is linkage. This is the process of makingconnections between separate items of individual history to build up afamily tree structure.

All of the processes of historical research come into play here: froma collection of all pertinent facts and an immersion in the local historyof a certain place and period to the generation of hunches and hypothesesfired by intuition. Then the subjection of these structures to criticalanalysis and the requirements of evidential proof. Certainly, the computer will not supplant the investigator in these activities bit it mayaugment his powers; for instance, by pulling out from his data base likely candidates for linkage that he otherwise would have overlooked.

Finally, we have the abilities of a computer program to quickly insertadditional data, delete old data or make changes and be ready to print outfinal copies in any desired format.

All of this sounds very good, but what will it cost the family researcher in time and money? For a discussion of the latter see a recent article by Jack McKay.* As to the former, this depends upon the desires andabilities of the researcher.

At one extreme he may be unwilling or unable to do more than use thecomputer as a useful ready-made tool. In this case he will probably electto purchase or rent a personal computer with various standard softwarepackages. Some of these are now available to perform rudimentary genealogical functions such as read-in of data in a fixed format and production ofpedigree charts or ancestor tables fromthe stored data. He will still haveto learn the standard input formats and crontrol key commands to obtainthe various outputs.

At the next level the investigator may be interested in learning enoughof the computer programming language to enable him to modify existing programs and/or to write new ones to do whatever he wants.

Finally, the innovative individual may want to assemble a custom computer from various commercially available components and either write his ownsoftware in standard languages or, perhaps, devise higher meta-languagesfor family history and genealogy applications.

This interest in the application of computers to genealogy is growing;there have already been several articles about it published in both computing and genealogical journals. At least two regional conferences on thesubject have been held. A bi-monthly newsletter, "Genealogical Computing"

published by family researchers Sara and Paul Andereck of Fairfax, Va.is starting up and genealogical query bulletin boards have been set upby phone-linkage between computers.

Both personal computer ownership and the hobby of genealogy are in arapid growth phase. There are going to be a lot of people trying to apply software and consulting assistance to these new users.

EARLY MIGRATION TO THE WEST ^

A number of SBCGS members have indicated an interest in earlysettlers of states bordering on the Ohio River.

A discussion of the organization and development of the area maybe helpful. Until after the close of the Revolution, these westernlands were almost entirely unsettled. By Royal Proclamation of Oct.7, 1693, granting of land west of the Alleghenies was forbidden andon June 22, 1774, Parliament annexed the western lands to the Provinceof Quebec. In 1776 the only white habitations were in the southernappalachian region.

There were many claims to lands west of the Alleghenies; New York,Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Indian tribeshad claims. At the suggestion of Maryland, which had no such claims,all ceded their claims and a new territory, to be known as the Northwest Territory, was formed in 1787.

The first division of this territory occurred in 1800 when IndianaTerritory was established. Ohio was admitted as a state in 1803.Michigan Territory followed in 1805 and Illinois Territory in 1809.The state of Indiana was admitted in 1816. In 1818 Illinois wasformed from the southern section, the northern part being annexed toMichigan Territory.

During the French and Indian War two westward roads through Pennsylvania were blazed. In 1753 Braddock's Road ran from Alexandria,Va.by way of Fort Cumberland to Laurel Hill, near Uniontown, Pa. Forbes'Road was north of Braddock's and ran from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh.

Boone's Wilderness Road to Kentucky started near his home on theYadkin River in North Carolina through Cumberland Gap to Boonesborough(1775) and on to the Ohio River at Louisville (1779). By 1784 therewere 30,000 whites in the Kentucky County or District, still a part ofVirginia. It was twenty years before this trail was passable foranything on wheels.

A turnpike system, with tollgates usually some 7 miles apart, e-volved, including parts of the old Braddock and Forbes roads. TheLancaster Turnpike was the first macadam road in America - a road 37feet wide with 24 in stone, and 62 miles long. The most importantearly turnpike was the National or Cumberland Road, projected to runas far as St. Louis. At first it extended 130 miles from Cumberlandto Wheeling and was a 60-foot road. In the early 1800's Irish laborers were imported to build the road.

The westward movement to the Northwest Territory was in three maindirections. Across New York State - From Massachusetts an overland route crossed the Hudson River below Albany, then continued tothe headwaters of the Susquehanna, then down the river, merging withcross-Pennsylvania movement or going directly westward by the CatskillTurnpike a^id its extension to Cleveland in the Western Reserve or bya more northerly route through Albany, following the Mohawk Valley andlater the Erie Canal, opened in 1825.

Across Pennsylvania - emigrants from Rhode Island and Connecticutwent overland, crossing the Hudson River at the Newburgh Ferry, following along near the southern line of the Connecticut-claimed portion ofPennsylvania and across in a southwesterly direction to Fort Pitt orfollowing the Delaware to Easton and joining the route of the New Jer-seyites headed for the Symmes Purchase or those from Philadelphia.

From Virginia - Virginians moved through the Shenandoah Valleynorthward or westward across Kentucky. There was a Wilderness Roadfrom Cumberland, Md., to Danville, Kentucky.

Dated of admission of the various states should be kept in mind.Vermont 1791; Kentucky 1792; Tennessee 1796; Ohio 1803; Louisiana 1812;Indiana 1816; Mississippi 1817; Illinois 1818; Alabama 1819; Maine 1820(earlier part of Mass.); Missouri 1821; Arkansas 1836;Michigan 1837;Wisconsin Territory former 1840,state 1848; Iowa 1846; Oregon Territory1846; Florida, acquired from Spain 1819,state 1845; Texas annexed 1845(included a strip up across Colorado and into what is now Wyoming);Mexican Cession of 1848,embracing Utah,Nevada,California,Arizona andparts of New Mexico and Colorado; Minnesota 1858;West Virginia separated from Virginia 1861, state 1863; Alaska purchased from Russia 1867.The Carolinas and Georgia originally extended to the Mississippi River.Portions were ceded to form the states of Alabama and Mississippi.

Amy Woods MarwedeWOODS FAMILY REUNION

The reunion of the family of the late Supt. Edward Melyen Woodsof Melrose, Mass. was a marvelous affair which took place at the homeof one of his granddaughters, Diane Marwede, wife of Eugene LewisSkeen, at 5060 Griffin Lane in Medford, Oregon, the week of the 18thof July, 1981.

The Woods family has traced its ancestry back to Stephen Hopkinswho came on the Mayflower in 1620, through Supt. Woods' mother, Ange-line Hamilton born in Yarmouth, N. S., 13 Sept. 1849.

Relatives started to arrive all during the week by air, cars,andMobile Homes, helping to ease the sleeping arrangements and the transportation problems to and from the airport and on side trips.

The Skeen family has a nice home and 8 1/2 acres of land so itmade an ideal place to have a reunion and they were very gracious hosts.Every one pitched in to help with the meals and Dorothy Whitford fromRutland, Vt., took charge of shopping for food and planning and cooking the meals and did a great job.

The weather was perfect all week, in the 80's and 'nary a dropof rain, a little unusual for Oregon.

During the week some of the men - John Marwede, Bud Wentzel andAl West, a former builder in Santa Barbara, California, built a chicken house, which was finished in a couple of days. Apparently it looked very inviting to the younger children, as some of them decided tomake good use of it before the chickens arrived, so armed with theirsleeping bags they slept there for several nights leaving more room onthe living room floor for the rest of the children, who slept in rowsof sleeping bags. They had fun.

One of the girls confided to me that she was a little scared outthere. I couldn't blame her as we could hear the coyotes howling atnight and snakes were found in the wood pile in the yard. We all sawdeer often only a few yards from the house.

During the week there were trips to historic Jacksonville Oregon, a pioneer village five miles west of Medford where on of theWest's most extensive displays of horse-drawn vehicles and covered wagons is shown. The ladies and children enjoyed the nice old shops andhomes for lunches while the men played golf.

One of the highlights was a dinner at the Mon Desir Inn nearCentral Point, a few miles north of Medford near Route 5. This beautiful old house was built in 1910 by Conroe Fiero, a Chicago Millionairefor his brice, Grace Andrews, who was starring in "Beverley of Graus-tark on the stage in New York when Mr. Fiero brought her to this landwhere 'fruit is prodigal and not a forbidden tree."

•.,.« Archltects Whitehouse and Foyon built the house in the center ofa 140-acre estate in the Rogue River Valley. They later designed RadioCity in New York. The house was the scene of fabulous parties in theearly part of the century. Folks of fame and fortune from two continents gathered there. We had a beautiful dinner in wonderful surroundings.

A memorable trip was to Crater Lake, eighty miles to the north ofMedford. A beautiful ride through tall pines and along the Rogue andother rivers. We took our lunch with us and sat at picnic tables overlooking the spectacular lake - such a gorgeous shade of blue.

Woods Family Reunion

The last night was the highlight of the reunion, a family showput on by many of the family. The children, ranging in age from 17years to 20 months, outdid themselves. They planned their own programs and,there was everything from piano recitals to ballet dancing,singing, a talk by one of the boys on a soccer trip to England, Scotland and Wales last summer, cheer leading routines and many more.Mabel and Dorothy Woods and Al West gave a short history of theirlives. There were slides of many of the families over the years,which brought back a lot of memories and laughs. Bot West who worksfor Mobil Oil showed most interesting slides from one of his trips toEgypt. It all came to an end with fond goodbyes and more hugs andkisses and hopes of doing it again soon.

A few days since, a Mr. Henderson, resident of Wayne Township, in this county,"net death by falling into the fire, when deeply intoxicated. It was his practicefor some years to drink to excess, and sometimes to exhibit the appearance of a man,with reason dethroned and passions in full sway; nothing however, could put a checkto his folly; but rushing on in his maddened career, he met death in the awful manner above described.

This is a solemn warning to those who trifle with the bottle, and make salvesof the minds and bodies which God designed for nobler purposes. It teaches such tostand back from the destruction which awaits them, and shun the rock on which Henderson wrecked his hopes and prospects. And those who deal out damnation to persons who have drank away their reason and their judgment, should learn from thisthat the price of blood isupon their heads. ***** '

To what our correspondent h-s said above, we would add, that Mr. Hendersonwas sane fifty odd years of age, a man of family, and possessed of some property;and, aside fran being addicted to the vice of intemperance, we believe sustained afair character. He was an old resident of this county. His death, which occurredon Sunday last, was caused by falling from his chair into the fire, during a shortabsence of his family from the room, and from which, in consequence of intoxication,he was unable to extricate himself. After lying on the fire for, as is supposed,about half an hour, he was discovered by his daughter, who dragged his cripsed androasted corpse from the flames. An inquest was held over the body by Henry Lehman,Esq. of this town, and a verdict rendered in accordance with the above facts.

Author, Patricia Meade White, member of SBCGS, who beginning in 1936as Florence White wrote the "Amazing America" travel columns for theNew York Times, introduced the bock the weekend of June 20th at thefirst Santa Barbara Book Fair at the Museum of Natural History inMission Canyon, Santa Barbara. Displayed with the emerald-greencovered book was a large photograph of President Reagan and a copyof his letter of thanks for an advance copy, disclosing that thebook meant very much to him because his father, having been orphanedat the age of six, had never known much or told him much about hisfamily. Original personal research was done by the author years agoin Ireland primarily in connection with an historical novel aboutGrace O'Neill, kidnapped in 1618 and taken to Virginia. The bookis well illustrated with maps, charts of lineages and family relations,and photographs secured by Kevin Joyce on a business trip to Ireland,with the assistance of Liam O'Ranlon of Shanhonside Tourism andPadraig O'Reilly, photographer, including Glen Regan and the Gap ofGLendine, Slieve Bloom Mountains. The author also expresses deepgratitude to P. 0. Faolain, Historian for the Ancient Order of Hibernians, for his enthusiasm and cooperation.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

One of California's 27 originalcounties. While the county wasactually created in 1850, the history of the area dates back to1542. In that year Juan Cabrillodiscovered the Santa Barbara Channel and later, according to legendcrossed to San Miguel Island,wherehe died and was buried. A secondSpanish explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino, entered the channel on theFeast Day of Saint Barbara in 1602and named the area accordingly. Fr.Junipero Serra founded the SantaBarbara mission in 1786. SantaBarbara Royal Presidio, established April 21, 1782, was the last offour royal presidios in Alta California - San Diego, Monterey, SanFrancisco and Santa Barbara. SantaBarbara had all three Spanish forms-Presidio representing the military;Pueblo, civil and Mission,religious.

In 1873 Ventura County was established from the southern portionof the original Santa Barbara area.
