• Evaluation for Participation and Recognition: Initialevaluationtoestablishparticipationand receiveprogramrecognition.Annualevaluationto ensureactivecompliancewiththeprogramcriteria anddeterminetheprogram’seffectiveness.

Why Practice Responsible Viewing?Hawaiianspinnerdolphinsarefrequentlyseeninthenearshore,shallowcovesandbaysoftheHawaiianis-landsandcanbeeasilyviewedfromshoreorboat.Watchingthemintheirnaturalhabitatcanbeanexhilaratingexperience.However,whenweapproachwilddolphinstooclosely,movetooquickly,ormaketoomuchnoise,weincreasetheriskofdisruptingtheirnaturalbehaviors,suchasresting,nursing,breathing,breeding,sheltering,andsocializing.DisruptionofthesenaturalbehaviorsisaformofharassmentandagainstFederallaw.

What is Dolphin SMART?DolphinSMARTisaunique,voluntaryrecognitionandeducationprogramofferingparticipationincentivesforcommercialdolphinviewingbusinessesthatvoluntarilyfollowthe“programcriteria,”andeducatetheircustomersabouttheimportanceofresponsibleviewingofwild

dolphinsinHawaiianwaters.Theprogramalsoincludesanimportantresearchcomponentthatprovidesinsightaboutthedailylivesofthelocal,wildmarinemammalpopulations.

Dolphin SMART Program Purpose:• Minimizethepotentialofwilddolphinharassment causedbycommercialviewingactivities.

• Reducepeople’sexpectationsofwantingtoclosely interactwithwilddolphinsinamannerthatmay causeharassment.
