  • LessonSummary:Thepurposeofthislessonistobuildknowledgeofhowtoclassifyanimals.Studentswilllearntoclassifyspeciesintotheirdomain,aswellaslearnthehierarchyofgroupingsintaxonomy.Followingalessononthetopic,studentswillbegintoresearchtwoanimalsoftheirchoice,livingorextinct.Itisencouragedthatstudentsstudyananimalavailablefordissection,butitisnotrequired.Therewillbeclasstimegivenforthis,noneoftheprojectshouldbedoneoutsideoftheclassroom,otherthanforfinishingtouches.Resourceswillbeprovided.Afterthestudentsfindabulkoftheirresearchfortheiranimals,theywillcreateapowerpointcomparingtheanimalstaxonomyandevolutionofthespecies,usingasmanyvisualsaspossible.EstimatedDuration:Five50minuteclassperiods.

    Commentary:Mygoalforthestudentsisforthemtounderstandwhywecategorizespeciesintodifferentgroups.Ihopethattheywillfindappreciationintherelationshipsamongsuchalargenumberofspecies.Iamgivingthestudentsthefreedomtochoosetheiranimalstomakeitmoreinterestingforthemandkeepthemmoreengaged.Ianticipatethelessonapproachingtheresearchwillbeachallengeinkeepingthestudentsinvolved.Itwillalsobeachallengereviewingwiththestudentshowtoresearch.Itisaround10thgradewhenstudentsfirststartlearningthedosanddontswithoutmuchpractice.Ifindbiologyexcitingandwilldowhateverittakestokeepmystudentsengaged,aswellasansweranyquestionstheymayhave.TherearemanyacronymsIcouldteachmystudentstohelpthemremembertheorderofclassification.TokeepthemmoreengagedIcouldprovideliveexamplesofsomesmallanimals,andexplaintheirtaxonomyandhowitworks.

    InstructionalProcedures:

    Day1:

    Onthisdaythestudentswilltaketheirpreassessmentquiz.Thefirst5minutesofclassIwillpresentthequizandletthestudentsknowthatitsjusttoseewhattheyknow.Thequizwillbeshortandtakenolongerthan20minutes.Itwillbeturnedinandlatergradedforcompletion.Thelast25minutesofclasswillbelecturebasedusingaSMARTboard

  • demonstratingmyownpowerpoint.Thiswillbeoverthefirstsectionofonechapteraboutanimalclassificationandnomenclature.

    Day2:

    Forthefirst10minuteswewilldoashortreviewofthelecturefromthepreviousdayandansweranyquestionsthestudentsmayhave.Iwillpassbackthestudentspreassessmentandgoovertheanswers,lettingthemgradetheirownpapers(10minutes).Thenext20minutesofclasswillbealessononproperresearchandinstructionsfortheproject.UsingmySMARTboardtodemonstrate,Iwillshowstudentsappropriatewebsitestoutilizeandgiveashortreviewonhowtocitetheirsources,doingafewpracticeones.Dependingonwhetherthereisalast10minutesofclass,Iwillgivediscussiontimetothestudentstostartthinkingabouttheanimalsfortheirproject.

    Day3:

    Day3willbespentonlaptopsintheclassroom.Eachstudentwillbeprovidedwiththeirown.Thisisthefirstdayofresearchandtheentire50minuteswillbespentonit.Studentsareindependentlyworking,writingdownanyinformationandwebsitestheyfinduseful.Iwillbeinvolved,minimally.

    Day4:

    WhenthestudentsarriveforclassIwillhaveasamplepowerpointontheboard.Iwillslidethroughitgivingthestudentsanideaofhowtoapproachtheproject,answeringanyquestionstheymayhaveabouttheprogram.Laptopswillalreadybesetupontheirdesks.Fortherestofclass(about25minutes)studentswillcontinuetheirresearchandideallybegintheirpowerpointpresentations.Illbewalkingaroundcheckingtheirprogress.

    Day5:

    Thiswillbethelastdayforstudentstocompletetheirpowerpointpresentations.TheresearchportionshouldbecompletedandIwillbecheckingthatallstudentshavemovedon.Studentswillbeallowedtoworkontheirprojectsathomeifanyfinishingtouchesneedtobemade.

    PreAssessment:

  • Thepreassessmentinvolvesashortquizonthestudentsknowledgeofthesubject.Mostlikely,theydonthavemuchofabackgroundtothislevelofbiology.Idliketoseewhattheymayknowandgettheirbrainsworkinginthebeginningofclass.

    ScoringGuidelines:Ondays3,4,and5,Iwillbemakinglapsaroundtheclassroomansweringquestionsandcheckingstudentprogress.

    Thepreassessmentwillbegradedforcompletion,andwillbepassedbacktothemtobegradedontheirown.Thegoalisforthemtolearnfromtheirmistakesvisuallyandverbally.PostAssessment:Thepostassessmentistheirfinishedpowerpointproject.Ontheirdaybacktoclasstheywillbegivenasimilarquiztothepreassessmentoverthesectionthatwillbegradedaccordingly,notjustforcompletion.

    ScoringGuidelines:Finalprojectsshouldcontainaminimumof5graphicsandaminimumof8slidesdemonstratingtheirunderstandingoftaxonomicgroupsandtheirnaming.Theymustalsouseproperresearchstrategiesandcitetheirsources.Spellingofallanimalclassificationsmustbespelledcorrectly.Thegradeforthiswillbecalculatedusingarubricandwillbeapercentageoutof100points.

    DifferentiatedInstructionalSupport

    Describehowinstructioncanbedifferentiated(changedoraltered)tomeettheneedsofgiftedoracceleratedstudents:

    Thesestudentswouldmostlikelyjustfinishtheirprojectsmorequickly,askinglessquestions.Itisalwaysniceforstudentstoconsultwithotherstudentsandevencheckeachotherswork.TypicallytheoverachieversarehappytohelptheirfellowstudentsandIwouldencouragethemtodoso.
