• Taxes are a fee charged by a government on a certain good

• Allows the government to raise money for services

Sales tax

• Sales Tax—a consumption tax on the sale of a wide range of goods and services.

• Although collected from sellers at the retail level, consumers bear the cost of sales taxes.

Excise tax

• Excise tax: a tax paid only on specific types of items, such as alcohol, gasoline, luxury items

tariffs

• Tariff—a tax placed on imported and/or exported goods (things).

• High tariffs affect the price of goods: a higher tariff makes the cost higher

• People are less likely to buy a good if it is more expensive

Proclamation 1763• -what did it say?

• Colonists could not move west of the Appalachan mountains

• -why did the British want this?

• To stop the fighting between Native Americans and colonists after Pontiac’s Rebellion

• -why would the colonists be upset by this?

• They wanted to move west because they felt like they had the right to do it since they moved to the Americas

Townshend Act 1767

• •laws made Americans cover the costs of having troops stationed in the colonies

• • created new taxes on popular things like glass, lead, paper, paint and tea

• Gave a British company (East India Tea Company)

• Exclusive control of the tea trade: a monopoly

• What ways do you think that settlers got around having to pay for the taxes?

• And tariffs on those goods from out of the country wha????
