She said DaeDae would walk in the room and his smile would touch hearts. “We thank DaeDae for that,” Colwell said. Along with the balloon release, a purple-leaf plum tree was planted in his memory. Guidance Counselor Jessica Eason said it is one of the first trees to bloom in the spring and is a symbol of immense strength, pro- tection and life. “Planting a tree in memory of someone you love can bring great com- fort as it sets new life into the earth,” Eason said. As it continues to grow, he will always be remembered. “This gift of life will forever be in the memory of DaeDae as it inspires energy, faith, devotion and courage,” Eason said about the tree embrac- ing the warmth and sky above. Before the balloon release, fourth-grade students Daelyn Kittell, Emma Matthews and Malachi McCants read a poem in honor of their classmate and to give comfort to family mem- bers. “Hold a hand, say a prayer, close your eyes and see me there,” the students said while citing a portion the poem. “I know you may feel a bit torn apart, please know that you’ll be forever in my heart. Now fly away as high as you can go …” Once again, Colwell thanked DaeDae’s family for allowing him to be a little Leopard. “DaeDae was very spe- cial to us and always will be,” the principal said. “What comes from the heart goes to the heart — that is one quote I believe in. His smile definitely went to our hearts.” He was a fan of Caroli- na Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. To assist with medical expenses, the students showed sup- port through the “Dabbin 4 DaeDae” campaign. Newton made the dab popular during celebra- tions at football games. “We will forever dab for DaeDae,” the stu- dents said. The funeral service for DaeDae will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Charles E. Perry School in Roseboro. Condo- lences may be sent to www.butlerandson.com or through the Facebook page, #TeamDaeshaun. Prior to the memorial, many school officials expressed their sympathy for the family. Jeana Carr, director of elementary education for Sampson County Schools, was among them. “DaeDae always had a smile on his face even during adversity,” she said, “and was a wonder- ful role model for others.” Reach Chase Jordan at 910- 249-4617.
