yearsagoagroupofdedicatedpeopleofTawahadthecourageand
foresighttoformabowlingclubandwewhoarenowprivilegedtobe
membersofitcanenjoythefineamenitiesandgoodfellowshipthat
makesuptheTawaBowlingClub.
AsyoureadthroughthisbookletyouwillgainaknowledgeoftheClubas
ithasbeenoverthepasttwenty-fiveyearsandofthemanychangesthat
havetakenplaceinthattime.Itispleasingtoseeseveralofthoseearly
membersstillverymuchapartoftheClubanditsactivitiesandnodoubt
othernameswillrefreshmemoriesofpastfriendshipsandmemorable
associationsbothonandoffthegreen.
Inlookingbackoverthosecrowdedyearsbetween1960and1985one
cannothelpbutfeelhowfortunatetheClubhasbeentohavehadsomany
willingworkersasmemberstodoalltheprojectsthathavebeencarried
outinthatperiodoftime.Todaywecanfeelproudoftheireffortsin
providinguswithatrulygreatClub.
Mythanksgotofoundationmemberandpastpresident,ChookFowler,
forthemanyhoursofpainstakingresearchwhichwentintogathering
mostofthematerialforthebookletandtothesubcommitteemembers,

EarlyHistory
TheformationoftheTawaBowlingClubevolvedfromadesirebylocal
bowlerstoformaclubwithintheTawaBoroughratherthantravelto
otherlocationstoplaybowlswhich,insomeinstances,werequite
distant.
Priorto1960severalgroupswereworkingtowardsthisgoal.Onewasto
formtheTawaServicesBowlingClubbasedontheTawaR.S.A.
organisationsituatedinOxfordStreet,whiletheremaindercametogether
toformtheTawaBowlingClub.
Apublicmeetingheldearlyin1959attheLindenCommunityCentre
attractedsufficientinteresttowarrantafurthermeetingbeingcalledon
7thApril1959atthesamevenue.

asasubcommitteetoinvestigatecostsandmethodoffinancingthe
projectandtodraftRules.
AdeputationhadwaitedontheTawaBoroughCounciltoinvestigatethe
availabilityoflandandlaterreportedthattheCouncilwaspreparedto
offeranareaintheGrassleesReserveandthatthematterofaleasewas
beingconsideredbyCouncilsolicitors.
Thiswasprogressindeed!Thoughnumbersattendingthoseearly
meetingsweresmalltheirenthusiasmwasconsiderable.
EldonArmstrongandCedricHoganhadbeenworkingondrawingup
someRulesforthenewclubwhichwerereportedatameetingon27th
January1960attheTawaScoutHallandwhich,induecourse,were
approvedbytheNewZealandBowlingAssociation.Theuniquefeature
aboutthoseRuleswasthattheyweredesignedtoprovideforacomposite
ormixed(maleandfemale)club,withfullplayingrightsbeingmade
availabletobothmenandwomenmembers,whichwasinaccordance
withthewishesoftheTawaBoroughCouncilinitsmakingavailableland
inGrassleesReserve.
On11thFebruary1960theRuleswereadoptedatageneralmeetingof
members,againheldintheTawaScoutHall,anditwasfromthismeeting
thattheClubofficiallybegan.Alsoatthismeetingitwasresolvedto
proceedwiththeestablishmentofamenitiestothemaximumlimitthat
financeswouldallowanditwasherethatthefirstExecutiveCommittee
waselectedwhichcomprisedthefollowing:-

TheonlyfinancialmembersrecordedatthisstagewereEldonArmstrong
andChookFowler.
ThelandmadeavailableintheGrassleesReservewasthatareawhichis
stilloccupiedbytheClub.Previously,however,whenabowlingclubin
TawahadfirstbeenmootedKowhaiParkatLindenwasmentionedasa
likelysitewhileanotherstrongpossibilityreferredtowasatTakapu.
BecausetheClub'sfinanceswereseverelylimitedworkingbeessoon
becametheacceptedmeansofgettingthingsdoneandthiswasvery
evidentintheformationofthefirstgreen.
Ithadbeenestimatedthatasumof£1,800wouldberequiredtolaya
greenandformsurrounds.Whenpledgesfordebentureswerecalledthey
totalledonly£800butitwasdecidedtoproceedanywaytothelimitof
moneyinhand.hopefullyatleasttothestageoflayingandsowinga
green.Thisoptimismwasfoundedonthepremisethat70peoplewould
eachcontributeanaverage£20bywayofdebentureloansandthese
fundswouldbeaugmentedbytwopaidcontributinglifemembershipsof
£100each,EldonArmstrongandChookFowlerhavingdecidedtotakeup
thisformofmembership.
Aquotationfor£1,140tolayagreensuitableforplaywasacceptedfrom
alandscapingcontractor,OwenH.Rees.Membersweretoprovidethe
levels,dotheconcretefoundationsandconstructsurroundsunder
supervisionofErnieMexted.TheClubwasshortofcapitalandlacked
greenlayingexperience,butnotenthusiasmandenergy.The
establishmentofthefirstgreenhaditshiccoughsbut,byarrangement
withthecontractor,somecostswereoffsetthroughallowancebeing
madeforlaboursuppliedbymembers(atarateof10/-perhour)andthe
jobwaseventuallycompleted.
Thestandardoftheditcheswasnothighwhichcausedsomeconcernand
endeavoursweremadetoraisetheheightandimprovethequalityofthe
walls.Withdeeperditchesthanarerequiredtodayaconsiderableareaof
turfhadtoresisttheonslaughtofdrivenbowls.Allclubshadthis
problemasgrasssurfacedditchestendedtobreakupandcrumbleand
werenoteasytorepair.Itwasnotuntil1964infactthatwecameto
gripswiththesituation.AsmallgangheadedbyBarryHorsnell,a
memberwhojoinedtheClubin1962andwhoseenergyandorganising
abilitywasaninspiration,decidedonacompletereconstructionofall
ditches.
Withtheaidofamould,healthyturfswereremovedfromgrassedareas
aroundthebanksandgraftedontore-shapedditches–atediousand
back-breakingtask.
Plansforaclubhousewereapprovedanditwasdecidedtoengagea
builder,W.Quirk,toerecttheframework,rooftrusses,foundations,
roofingandtocloseinthemainwallsona"labouronly"basis.The
remainderoftheworkwascompletedbyafewclubmembersunderthe
directionofPeterBroadandmuchofthisworkwasdoneatnight.
Materialsintheformofallwindows,framesandsashesaswellastheroof
andmuchofthetimberforthisprojectweredonatedbyEldon
Armstrong.Thisfinegesture,togetherwiththeconsiderableworkcarried
outbyvoluntarylabour,enabledthecompletionoftheclubhouse,an
accomplishmentwhichthemembersatthetimefeltjustifiablyproud
eventhoughtheareasofthemen'slockerroom,hallwayandkitchen
wereleftopentoprovideonelargecommonarea.
1961-62
AnAnnualGeneralMeetingwascalledfor26thJuly1961andwasheldin
theuncompletedclubhouse.

thereforeresolvedthattheladiesformtheirowncommitteeandthat
theyapplyforaffiliationtotheWellingtonWomen'sBowlingCentreif
theysowished.AnhistoricmotionmovedbyHec.Wottenwasseconded
byMrs.W.McCarter"thatthemayorbeinvitedtoopentheClub".This
motionwaspassedandMr.E.Kemp,theMayorofTawa,wasinvited
whichsetaprecedentthathasbeenmaintained,withfewexceptions,ever
since.
Atacommitteemeetingheldon29thAugust1961whichwasattendedby
womenmembersMesdamesElliottandHogan,itwasdecidedthat
women'ssubscriptionsbesetatEntranceFee£3,FirstYearsubscription
1/-andAnnualSubscription£2/10/-thereafter.
AgeneralmeetingoftheWomen'sSectionwasheldonthe20th
September1961attheGirlGuidesHallwiththeClub'sPresidentand
Secretaryinattendancebyinvitation.Mrs.HoganwaselectedPresident
oftheWomen'sSectionwithexecutivemembersbeingMesdames
Armstrong,McCarter,ScottandSinclair.Itwasformallydecidedto
affiliatewiththeWellingtonWomen'sBowlingCentre.
Messrs.AlanTurnerandCedricHoganattendedthefirstcommittee
meetingoftheWomen'sSectionheldon16thNovember1961atthe
homeofMrs.HoganwhereMr.Turnerinformedtheladiesoftheentrance
feeandsubscriptionasmentionedaboveandsuggestedthattheyappoint
theirownSecretarybutnotTreasurerasfunds,meantime,wouldbe
handledbytheClub'sTreasurer.
ThosepresentwereMrs.Hogan(Chairperson),MesdamesJ.Armstrong,
W.McCarter(electedSecretary),D.ScottandM.Sinclair.
TheClub'sofficialopening,whichwastohavebeenheldon9thDecember
1961,wasdelayedtoenablememberstocompletetheclubhousetoa
stagewhereitwashabitable,agooddecisionforitrainedheavilyonthe
day.
TheopeningwasattendedbytheMemberofParliamentforthearea,Mr.
H.May.OtherspeakersweretheMayorofTawa,Mr.E.Kemp,President
oftheWellingtonBowlingCentre,Mr.P.Bray,andrepresentativesofthe
TawaServices,Johnsonville,PoriruaandTitahiBaybowlingclubsand
twofurtherclubswhodonatedfurnitureandequipmentandprovided
support–MiramarandSeatoun.
AtthisfunctionahighstandardofcateringwassetwhichhasbeenaClub
featureeversince.Originalmembershaddefiniteideasonthematterof
catering.Theywereoldfashionedandtable-proudandeventhoughthe
buildingwasonlypartlylinedandconditionswerecrampedand
congestedontheday,thehospitalitywonthroughandthefriendly
goodwillthatpervadedthefunctionwassomethingtoremember.
GoodrelationswiththerecentlyformedneighbouringTawaServices
BowlingClubweremaintained.Topromotefurthergoodwillbetweenthe
twoclubsJimGraham,amemberofTawaServicesclub,donatedatrophy
in1962forinterclubcompetitiononatwiceannualhome-and-awaybasis
whichovertheyearshasprovedpopular.KnownastheJimGraham
trophyitisnowplayedforannuallyandisregardedasakeyeventonthe
Club'sprogramme.

ThisseasonsawtheClubbeginningtodevelop.Thesurfaceofthegreen
wassteadilyimprovingandcompetitionshadbynowbeenestablished.
PeterBroad'sgangofwillingworkershadalmostcompletedthe
clubhouse,withworkingbeesafeatureofClublifewithoutwhich
progresswouldhavebeenslow.Theybecameawayoflifeatweekends,a
fulfillmentinthemselves,forcharactersinplentywereamongour
members,providingentertainmentandmakingworkinghoursfullof
enjoyment.O.T.WilsonandHec.Wottenresignedasmembersbutthey
werereplacedbyJimBrassandPaulCouchmanwhoensuredthattedium
neverspoilttheClub'sactivities.
Moneyraisingwasalsoaneverpresentpreoccupation.Theoriginalsub
committeeofMessrs.Anderson,CrossandFowlerraisedfundsbysmall
rafflesandgamblingactivitiescombinedwithsocialeveningswhich
involvedhilariousgamesandutilisedsuchunlikelycreaturesaslive
slaters.Thissubcommitteeeventuallygavewaytoacommitteeheaded
byPatBarrett.Patintroducedamoredirectandbusinesslikeapproachto
fundraisingwith200Clubsandlargerrafflesbeingtheorderoftheday.
Manymembersfoundthatsellingraffleticketsmeantalsobuyingtickets
fromotherorganisationssimilarlyplacedtous.Somemembers,suchas
NoelEvans,soldanamazingnumberoftickets.ItwasahappyCluband
developingasbestitcouldwithalimitedamountoffinance.
ThisyearsawtheacquisitionofthefirstClubflag.WallyGreenhalgh
reportedthatasuitableonecouldbepurchasedfor£5,whichmetwith
theExecutiveCommittees'approvalandhesubsequentlyobtainedand
donatedthistotheClub.Aflagwasnotmuchusewithoutaflagpoleso
EldonArmstrongquicklyorganisedthemanufactureanderectionofthe
presentfinemastwhichhealsodonatedtotheClub.
AnotherachievementwasthedevelopmentofadistinctiveClubbadge.
ClubmemberRoyScott,acommercialartistofsomerenown,was
requestedtodevelopseveraldesignsfortheCommittee'sconsideration
andasuitablechoicewasmadeattheOctobermeeting.Costofthe
originaldieforthebadgewas£10andcostofthebadgeswas5/-but
theseweresoldfor7/6inordertorecoverthecostofthedie.Aninitial
orderwasplacedfor80badges.
ThusthecurrentandratheruniqueClubbadgewasevolvedandforhis
effortsRoywasimmediatelyrequestedtodesignaClubsign.Thishedid
byadoptingthepatternofthenewlycreatedbadgeandbeforethe
openingofthenextseasonthiswasproudlydisplayedoverwhatwasthen
afrontgatewaywherethepresentpathtoDaviesStreetmeetsthepaving
stones.Thesignremainedinthispositionuntillate1983whenitwas
removedtomakewayforanupgradingofthefrontagetotheclubhouse.

Thegreenwasstillnotplayingparticularlywellbutmemberswere
learningingreenmaintenanceandtheplayingsurfacewasimproving.
Grassgreensneedanoversowingofseedeachseasonwhichissownonto
asurfaceloosenedbygroovingandcoveredbyathinlayeroffinelysifted
soil.Eventhoughtorrentialrainwasexperiencedatsowingtimethat
yearandmostoftheseedlost,membersmoralewashigh.
TherewasagrowingconfidencewithintheClubandthiswasreflectedby
theincreasingnumberofmembersenteringinoutsidecompetitions.It
wasthefirstyearoftheClub'sparticipationintheTaranakiOpenFours
TournamentandteamsskippedbyJockDavidsonandLionelBearsley
bothqualified.
Planningfortheestablishmentofasecondgreenhadbeengoingonfor
sometimeandthiswastakenonestepfurtherwhen,ataSpecialGeneral
Meetingheldonthe25thNovember1963,itwasdecidedtoproceed.
Estimatedcostwas£1,100andtheExecutiveCommitteewasgiven
approvaltocalltendersandletacontractprovidedtheestimatedcost
wasnotexceeded.W.WattLtd.wastheonlycontractortosubmita
tenderandasitmettheconditionsofapprovalacontractwasentered
into.FinanceforthiswasprovidedbytheBankofNewZealandbywayof
anoverdraft.
Withaviewofagainachievingsavingsmembersundertookthe
excavationoftheditchesandconstructingthesurroundandwooden
cappingtodefinethegreen.AnonmemberandemployeeofDowner&
CompanyLtd.Mr.TomHindley,providedallthelevelsanddidnotcharge
forhisservices.Allthisworkwascarriedoutovertwodaysontwo
successiveweekendswhenonthefirstday31membersturnedoutand
20fronteduponthesecondday.
Withincreasingsocialactivitiesconsistingofdrawingmajorraffles,fund
raisingeveningsandothergeneralentertainment,asystemfordispensing
refreshmentshadbecomeanecessitysoacanteenwassetup.
Thefirstmodestarrangementconsistedofimprovisedshelvingbythe
walldividingthemen'stoiletfromthethenmainhallareawithanold
counterservingasabar.ThiswaspresidedoverbyTrevorNewlandwho
waslaterassistedbyGordonWetherall.Itwasanelementarysetup–an
openbarwithnolockupstorage,nowashingfacilities,infactnofacilities
fullstop!WhenthosetwomemberslefttheClubtherewassome
difficultyinfindingsomeonetotakeoverfromthem.Itwastheever
helpfulCedricHoganwhosteppedintothebreach,amanwhohardly
"indulged"atall,andindoingsoconductedthecanteeninamostefficient
manner.Openingtimewasconfinedtolunchandafternoonteabreakson
galadaysandattheconclusionofeachday'splay.
Aninnovationtriedbythefund-raisingcommitteeduringtheyearwas
Housie,anactivitythathadprovedfinanciallysuccessfulforseveral
bowlingclubsintheWellingtonarea.Unfortunatelythiswasnotsoinour
case.

Duringtheyearplantandequipmentwasgreatlybolsteredbythe
purchaseofanewmowerforthegreen,aportablerotarymowerfor
cuttingthegrassonthebanksandanorderwasplacedforafertiliser
spreader.

Thisseasonsawtheintroductionofthesecondgreen.Unfortunatelyit
hadawaterloggedbaptismwhenimmediatelyaftersowing,soilandseed
werewashedawayandthiswasfollowedbyaninvasionofseagulls.A
freshsowingofseedwasmoresuccessfulbutasthiswasdonealittlelate
intheyeargrowthwasnotgoodenoughtoproduceaplayingsurfacefor
thatseason.Sightswerethensetonimprovingitforthefollowingyear.
Theopendrainalongthenorthernboundarywaspipedandcovereda
sufficientdistancetoallowaccessbyheavytruckstothesoilshed.This
wasmadepossiblebytheClubbuyingtwolargeeightfootconcretepipes
whichwereaugmentedbythedonationoftwopipeseachbyEldon
ArmstrongandChookFowlerandlaidbyasmallbandofwillingworkers.
Anotherimprovementwasthecompletionoftheboardfenceonthe
easternboundarybesidetherailwayline.Thisprojecthadmadegood
progressduringthepreviousseasonandwasmadepossiblebyNew
ZealandRailwaysprovidingtheposts,whichwereoldrailway"sleepers",
andbyEldonArmstrongdonatingthehearttimberpalings.
ThereweresomefirstsfortheClub.One,whichunfortunatelywasasad
one,wasthepassingawayoftwoofourmembers,JackHurcomband
WallyMacklin.
ForthefirsttimetheClubenteredtheCentrePennantscompetitionsand
successatCentrelevelcamewhenBobPlattandKenFisherwonthe
ChampionofChampionsPairsevent.Jubilationranhighandalarge
numberofClubmemberswereonhandtowitnessthefinalwhichwas
playedattheWoburnclub.
Withasecondgreentocarefor,theSaturdayrostersystemwasinneed
ofoverhaul.Previouslyrosterdutiesconsistedofcuttingandrollingthe
green,mowingthesurrounds,cleaningtheinterioroftheclubhouseand
settingoutscoreboards,matsandjacksetc.Aseverymemberwasnot
capableofmowingabowlinggreen,thetimehadcometodivorcegreen
cuttingandmowingsurroundsfromtheweekenddetail.Therewasvery
littledemandforSundayplaybuttherosterwasmaderesponsiblefor
rollingandpreparingbothgreensforthetwodaysofeachweekend.
Mowingthenowextensivesurroundsandfrontlawnswaspartlydone
midweekundercontractandkeymemberswhowerealreadyheavily
involvedoncommitteeswereexemptfromrosterduties.
Anareatowardsthesouth-eastcornerofNo.1greendespiterepeated
topdressingwithsievedsoil,formanyyearscontinuedtosubsideand
leaveaslightdepression.
FromthetimeitfirstappeareditwasreferredtoasFowler'sGully,
namedafterfoundationmemberChookFowlerwhowasoneofthefew
bowlersintheearlydaysoftheClubwhocouldmasterthegreeninthis
particulararea.Atthetimethegreenwasformedthecontractorhad
identifiedwhatusedtobeanoldwatercoursewhichhadanextensivesoft
area.Althoughthe"Gully"hasnowdisappearedthereisasuspicionthat
itsshadowstillhauntsthegreen.
TheMatchCommitteeinstigatedasystemofmatchplayforsinglesand
pairswherebygameswereplayedinthemembersowntimeasandwhen
possible,subjecttosetfinishingdates.Thissystemwastobepersevered
withforseveralyearsbutbecauseofthemanyhasslesinvolvedingetting
gamesplayed,especiallywhenwetweatherhadinterferedwiththe
programme,itwaseventuallyabandoned.

Anewinter-clubcompetitionwasthehighlightofthe1965/66season.A
foundationmember,CurlyBlight,whohadretainedmembershipofthe
PoriruaBowlingClubdonatedatrophytobecompetedforannuallyby
TawaServices,Porirua,TitahiBayandourClub.Thebasisofthe
competitionconsistedoffourfoursteamsperclub(oneofwhichwasto
comprisethreejuniorswithaseniorskip)eachplayingthreegames
againstteamsfromeachoftheopposingclubs.
Fittinglytheinauguralcompetitionwasanexcitingeventwithsuccess
goingtotheTawaServicesclubwhichnarrowlyheadedoffourClub.
AnexperimentconductedbyBarryHorsnellandLionelBearsleyinthe
off-seasonpaidoff.Byusingatechniqueadoptedduring1964in
improvingtheditches,barepatchesofNo.1greenweresuccessfully
returfedandlargeexpansesofdustdisappeared.Thenewgreen,
designatedNo.2,wasstillnotuptoexpectationsbutanearlygrooving
andseedinggavehopeforanimprovedsurfacelaterintheseason.No.1
greenwascalleduponbytheCentreduringthewomen'sNational
Championshipswhenitperformedwellandattractedpraise.
BynowtheClubhaddevelopedahappysocialtogethernesswiththree
functionshighlightingeachyear.Theopening,Christmasandclosing
functionswerehilariousget-togethersinterspersedwiththeoccasional
fundraisingevening.Avividvisioncomesreadilytomindofgroupsof
memberssingingto"piano"musicproducedbyJimBrassfromanold
wornteachest,soconvincedweretheythathewasintunethattheodd
off-keynotecouldbeclearlydetected!
RecommendationsmadeattheAnnualGeneralMeetingledtosome
minorchangestotheClub'sconstitution,mostofamachinerynature,and
indicativeofayoungclubgrowingup.Twoalterationswereofnote,one
theadditionofJuniorVicePresidenttotheExecutiveCommitteeandthe
other,alimitationtothetermofpresidentialofficetooneyear.
InrecognitionofseveralannualsocialvisitsmadetotheClubbyits
members,theBankofNewSouthWalesSports&SocialClubthisseason
presentedtwohonoursboardswhichhadbeenmadeinthedistrict.These
boardsarestillbeingusedtorecordtheofficebearersandmain
championshipwinnersinboththeMen'sSectionandWomen'sSection.
DifficultyinmanningthecanteenpersistedandCedricHoganwas
prevailedupononcemoretoaccepttheappointmentofsteward.Opening
timeswerestillconfinedtolunchtime,afternoonteatimeandafter
completionofplay.
CedricHogan,withthesupportofsomeotherclubs'delegates,was
anxioustoseethelawrelatingtothesupplyofliquorinclubschangedto
meetthesocialneedsofthattime.Theireffortswerenotinvainasthe
NewZealandBowlingAssociationeventuallymetwiththeMinisterof
Justicetopressforlicensedbowlingclubs.
Systemstokeepourcanteenoperationswithinthelawhadbeena
headachesincetheClubopened.Privatelockersystemswereunworkable
ongaladaysandpre-orderedflagonsofbeerwithnamelabelsattached
wereexperimentedwithaswereothersystems,noneofwhichproved
entirelysatisfactory.
ThePresidentandSecretarywereauthorisedtonegotiatewiththeTawa
BoroughCouncilonthematterofrentalforthefollowingtermoffive
years,thefirstsuchtermbeingabouttoexpire.LaterintheseasonEldon
ArmstrongreportedthattheClubwouldshortlybeinformedbyletter
thattheleasewouldberenewedfora"peppercorn"rentalof1/-.

The1966-67seasonusheredinmorethanjustafewchanges.Entrance
Feeswereabolishedandsubscriptionswerelittlechanged.
AftersixyearsinofficetheoutgoingPresident,EldonArmstrongwas
honouredwithlifemembershipforcountlesshoursofdedicatedservice
toandleadershipoftheClub–thefirsttoreceivethisraredistinction.
BarryHorsnell,whowastransferredawayfromthedistrictattheendof
theseason,waspresentedwithaspecialHonourBadge,thefirstofits
kind.Itwasresolvedthatthebadgebestruckwiththewords"For
OutstandingService"inrecognitionofhiseffortsoverthetermofhis
membershipofmorethanfouryears.
Itwasabusyyear.AtlasttheClubhadapermanentsoilshedforwhich
muchcreditmustgotoJ.Whooleywholaidtheconcreteblocksforthe
walls.TheMen'sNationalTournamentwasheldinWellingtonthisseason
andforthefirsttimeourgreenswereusedforsinglesplay.Barry
Horsnellwastheumpire,havingqualifiedforhisbadgesomethree
monthspreviouslywithBobPlattandNevilleSwinburntobecomeour
firstumpires.
ThisyeartheClubjoinedwiththeTawaServicesBowlingClubto
conductathreedaytournamentoverLabourWeekendutilisingthe
greensandfacilitiesofbothclubs.Thistournamentwaslatertobecome
knownastheTawavillaOpenFoursTournamentandsponsoredbythe
CommercialBankofAustraliaLtd.whichisnowapartofWestpac
BankingCorporation.Itwasaresoundingsuccesswitheachclubnetting
£100profit,quiteasuminthosedays.
Aproposaltoextendtheclubhousewasinvestigatedandtwospecial
generalmeetingswerecalledtodiscussthematter.Thegreenlightwas
finallygiventotheprojectandfinancewasarrangedwiththeWellington
SavingsBank(nowknownasTrusteebankWellington).Tohelpmeet
repaymentsoftheloanitwasproposedtoraiseadditionalrevenueby
hiringthehall,andalreadythreeindoorbowlingclubsandtheNorthern
IndoorBowlingSubCentrehadmadeoverturesforitsfutureuse.
TheMen'sSectionmembershiphadpassedthefiftymarkwhilethe
Women'sSectioncouldonlymuster15mainlybecausethemajorityof
womenmembersatthattimewereworkingduringtheweek.Many
prospectivewomenmembersseemedtogravitatetotheTawaServices
clubwhichhadaflourishingwomen'ssectionwithastrongmidweek
competition.Itwasaperplexingsituationasfrominceptionourintention
wastohaveacompositeClub.WhentheConstitutionwasfirstdrawnup
thewomen'smembershipwaslimitedtoonethirdoftheClub'stotal
membershipbutitwasfarbelowthislevelatthetime.
Toattractnewladymemberstheirsubscriptionwassetatlessthanhalf
thatoftheTawaServicesClub.andaboutathirdoftheMen's
subscription.Itwasapparentthatuntilmidweekplaywasintroducedthe
women'smembershipwouldnotgreatlyincrease.
Ataspecialmeetingwiththewomen'ssectiontheladieswereassuredby
theExecutiveCommitteethattheirinterestswouldnotbeoverlooked
andthatexceptinspecialcircumstances,acertainnumberofrinkswould
alwaysbeavailabletothem.
Aproposaltoseeklandforathirdgreenwithapossibleviewtohaving
onegreenentirelyforladiesdidnotreceivemuchsupport.However,asit
wasbelievedtheTawaBoroughCouncilmightuselandimmediately
southofoursecondgreenforpurposeswhichcoulddetractfromthe
Club,anapproachtotheCouncilwasmade.Therequestwasdeclinedas
theCouncilhadsetasidethislandforafutureswimmingpool.
DuringtheyearitwasdecidedtoplantaPhebaliumhedgedownthe
centrestripbetweenthetwogreens.

Achangeoffeelingwasevidentamongsomeoftheclubmembers
concerningthemeritsoftheproposaltoextendtheclubroomsandata
specialexecutivecommitteemeetingamotiontorecommendtoaspecial
generalmeetingofmembersthattheprojectbedeferredforatleasttwo
yearswascarriedbyonevote.Subsequentdiscussionbecamealittle
heatedandtwomembersleftthemeeting,oneintendingtoresignfrom
theexecutivecommittee.Aspecialgeneralmeetingwascalledandthe
matterwasthoroughlydiscussed.Themeetingendorsedtheoriginal
decisiontoproceedwiththeextensionforthwith.Thecostofthebuilding
wastobefinancedbyaloanof$18,000fromtheWellingtonSavingsBank
securedbyamortgageoverthespecialleaseofthelandwhichtheClub
occupied.TocompletelegalitiesEldonArmstrong,ChookFowlerand
AlanHodgeswereappointedTrusteesoftheClub.
AnagreementwiththeRailwayswasenteredintowherebythenarrow
stripoflandbetweenthegreensandrailwaylinewasleasedtotheClub
ata"peppercorn"rental.
Thereasonforenteringintosuchanarrangementwastoavoiddamage
beingdonetothegreensatthetimetheRailwayssprayedthesidesofthe
lineasvapourfromthespraywasinclinedtodriftontotheplaying
surfaces.Intermsofthelease,whichisstillcurrent,theClubis
responsibleforkeepingthatpartoftheRailwayembankmentwhich
bordersontheeasternboundaryofourpropertyclearofnoxiousplants.
Inviewoftheproposedsitingofapublicswimmingpoolsouthofthe
secondgreenitwasdecidedtoerectafenceonthesouthernboundary.
Thetreesalreadyplantedtherewereoutsidethis.
ThisyearsawtheClub'sfirstsuccessintheCentreinter-clubcompetition
whenitwontheInterClubPennant.

wouldbecalledinthemonthofJune.Atthismeetingitwasalsodecided
thatourfinancialyearwouldconcludeattheendofAprilinsteadofthe
endofMay.
ThiswasalsotheyearinwhichtheJohnsonvilleBowlingClubmovedtoa
newsiteatFrankmoreAvenue,Johnsonville,andbecausethegreenswere
notreadyforplayweextendedaninvitationtoitsmembersofferinguse
ofourgreensinthemeantime.Thisofferwasgratefullyaccepted.
Withthenewadditionstoourclubhouseunderconstructiontherewasa
feelingofexcitementandexpectancywithintheClub–plansforre-siting
ofdoorsandpartitionsweretopicsofearnestconversation.
ItwasinthisyearthatitwasdecidedtodisplaythephotographyofPast
PresidentsaswellasthatofthecurrentPresidentintheclubhouse.
Thenewhallwasalmostcompletebutitwasdecidedtodeferaformal
openinguntilthenextseason.Theopenformatoftheoldclubhousewas
changedwiththeerectionofpassagewallsthusforminganenclosed
kitchenwithaserveryintothenewhall.Anextendedmenslockerroom
wasenclosedanddividedfromthehallbyapassagewayleadingtoa
smallentrancefoyeronthesouthsideofthebuilding.
Inanticipationoflettingthehalltoindoorbowlers,stocksofcrockery
andkitchenutensilswereincreasedandlargefloorashtraysdesigned.
Rowsofelevatedbarheatersweretobeinstalledasitwasenvisagedthat
themainlettingwouldtakeplaceinwinter.
PlansweremadeforanAnniversaryweekendtournamenttobe
conductedasthreeseparatecompetitionswithFoursonSaturday,Triples
onSundayandPairsonMonday.WellingtonBowlingCentreapprovalwas
forthcomingbutentrieswereinsufficienttosupporttheFoursandPairs
competitions.TheTriplesdaywassuccessfulandplanswereagainmade
tohavethreedaysoftriplesforthefollowingyearbutnosubsequent
actionwastaken.
Withthenewextensionswelladvancedandbothgreensfullyestablished,
PresidentWallyGreenhalghurgedhisExecutiveCommitteetohavea
driveonincreasingthemembershipasheconsideredthiswasessentialto
helpmeetrisingcosts.Withaviewtoencouragingpotentialfullplaying
memberstotheClubanewclassofmembershipwascreatedintheform
ofHonoraryMembers.Suchmembershipappliedforonlyoneyearand
carriedthesameprivilegesasSocialMembers.AnExecutiveCommittee
minuteof3rdSeptember1968reads,"...itbeingclearlyunderstoodthat
theirvisitsbestrictlylimitedandtheybeaccompaniedbytheirsponsors
andthatthesuitabilityofpersonsforthisclassofmembershipbeleftto
thegoodsenseofmembers".

andthefirstpersontooccupythispositionwasFrankKilby.
AnewcompetitionbetweenthefourclubsinthePoriruaBasinwas
namedafterthedonorofthetrophy,PoriruaMayorMr.WhitfordBrown.
TheBrownTrophywasintendedtobecompetedforbythechampion
fours,pairs,singlesandjuniorsingleswinnersofeachclubtobepitted
againsteachotherandheldatPorirua,TitahiBay,TawaandTawa
Servicesclubsbyrotation.
Theannualsubscriptionforthisseasonwasincreasedto$20formenand
$8forwomen–aconsiderableriseatthetimebutapparentlyquite
justified.
Forsometimemembershadexpresseddissatisfactionwiththechoreof
mowingthesurroundsaspartofSaturdayrosterdutiesandtheladies
foundthatproducingmorningandafternoonteasinterferedwiththeir
bowlingactivities.Consequentlyapersonwasengagedtomowthe
surroundsandatealadywasemployedtolookafterteamakingand
washingup.Employmentofthesepeoplewasreflectedintherisein
subscriptionrates.

AttheapproachoftheseasonthePresident-elect,AlanHodges,
announcedthatforpersonalreasonshewasunabletotakeupthe
positionandtenderedhisresignationfromtheexecutive.TheJuniorVice
President,PaddyMills,wasunabletorearrangehiscommitmentsto
assumetheofficesoCedricHogan,aformerJuniorVicePresidentwho
hadnottakenhigheroffice,wasnominatedanddulyelectedasPresident.
ThiswasaNationalTournamentyearwiththeWellingtonBowling
Centrecallingforgreenusageoverfourplayingdays.AGalaDaywasheld
duringthistournamentandteamsfromvisitingclubswereinvitedin
advancetoenter.Thisprovedtobeamostsuccessfuldayandwasthe
forerunnerofwhathasbecomeaveryprestigiousonedaytournament
whichtheClubhasrunoneachoccasiontheNationalTournamenthas
beenheldinWellington.
TheClubgainedsuccessonceagainatCentrelevelwhenJohnLambert
andKenFisherwontheChampionofChampionsPairseventbeinga
secondwininthisparticulareventforKen,hisprevioussuccesswasin
the1964-65season.
Clubprogrammeswerebecomingincreasinglyheavyandbyagreement
withtheTawaServicesClubitwasdecidedthisyeartoreducethe
competitionfortheJimGrahamTrophyfroma"homeandaway"basisto
anannualonedaytournament.

surfacessoacoringmachinecompletewithoperatorwashiredfromthe
WellingtonCityCounciltocorethegreensandthecoreholeswerefilled
withcoarsesand.
AdecisionbytheNewZealandBowlingAssociationtoreducethedepth
ofditchestoauniformtwoinchesnecessitatedfillingandraisingthem
aroundbothgreens.
Theladieswerealsointroducingchangesanditwasin1971thattheNew
ZealandWomen'sBowlingAssociationdecidedifthejackwasincorrectly
delivereditwouldnotbere-deliveredbutplacedwhereverdesiredby
theopposingskip.Italsodecidedthatthelengthofawoman'sbowling
frockwastobeofadistanceof14inchesfromthegroundandblousesor
jumperscouldbeworn.

Thisprovedtobeanextremelybusyseasonwhichcommencedwitha
revisionoftheconstitution.ThemoreimportantChangeeffectedwasthat
theProvidor'stitlewasalteredtoChairmanoftheHouseCommitteeand
appointedtotheexecutivecommittee.TheConvenoroftheMatch
CommitteebecameChairmanofthatcommitteeandwasalsoappointed
totheexecutive.Threemembersforeachofthosesub-committeeswere
tobeelected.TheWomen'sSectioncouldnowelectaVicePresident.
TheoutgoingmatchcommitteeoftheMen'sSectionhadbroughtforward
variousrecommendationswhichproposedthatseveralSaturdaysbeset
asideentirelyforsinglesplayandthat,ifnecessary,Sundaysbealso
consideredforplayingcompetitionmatches.TheAnnualGeneralMeeting
supportedtheserecommendationsandalsovotedinfavourofSunday
playforChampionofChampionsevents.
OtherrecommendationsapprovedweretheintroductionofaJuniorPairs
championship,andtheautomatictwolifesystemwaspreferredforall
championshipeventsexceptthefourswhereitwasfeltthatsectionplay
allowedformoregamesandgreaterinterestinthecompetition.
Adecisionofsomemomentwasmadeforthecanteentochargeforsplits.
Whereaspreviously,cordialsandsoftdrinkshadbeensuppliedfree,they
wouldinfuturebechargedatarateoffivecents.
ThegreenshadbeencauseforconcernandconsultationswithMr.R.
ShortoftheHuttClubandMr.C.WalkeroftheInstituteofTurfCulture
wereheld.Theexecutivecommitteedecidedonafeasibilitystudyfor
completerenovationandlayingofaweedgreen.Furtheradvicewas
obtainedfromMr.F.SmithofBlenheim,anexpertinthelayingofcotula
greensandtheirmaintenance.Afteraspecialgeneralmeetingwasheldat
whichtheprojectwasdiscussedthoroughlyitwasdecidedtoproceed
andhewasengagedtosupervisethelayingofcotulaonNo.2green.The
choiceofthisgreentobeconvertedtocotulawasappropriateforithad
notdevelopedagoodsoleofgrassandifmembersweretobewithoutthe
useofagreenforpartofaseasonthenthiswasthemostlogicalone.
Inpreparationforanautumnsowinganadequatewatersupplywas
installed.KobeVandenHeuvelwasappointedassistantgreen
superintendentandhewasgivensoleresponsibilityforthedevelopment
ofthecotulagreenwithsowingarrangementstobesupervisedbyMr.F.
Smith.
TheClubagainfiguredprominentlyinCentreeventswithJohnLambert
andKenFisherinthefinaloftheChampionofChampionsPairs,Ken
FisherinthefinaloftheChampionofChampionsSinglesandPatBeilby's
teaminthefinaloftheWomen'sChampionofChampionsFours.
TheJuniorPennantcompetitionwaswonfortheClubbyBasilHooker,
AlfGibbons,WarrenShawandDonRoberts.

ThecotulacoveringontheNo.2greenwasthinbutadequateandto
protectitfromundueweartheClubpurchasedasupplyofscrims.The
subjectofgreencareandmaintenancewasstilladifficultone.
ForyearstheClubhadbecomeaccustomedtothedependableservice
providedbyLionelBearsleyasgreenkeeper.Onhisretirementin1968
fromapositionwiththePostOffice,Lionelassumedfull-time
greenkeepingdutiesandassistedwiththeextensionstotheclubhouse,all
atanhourlyrateof10/-.In1971,whenheundertookotheremployment,
LionelresignedfromthepositionofgreenkeeperandattheAnnual
GeneralMeetingin1972hewasawardedaspecialHonourBadgefor
manyyearsofdedicatedservicetotheClub.Hewasthesecondmember
toreceivethisrareaward.
Areplacementgreenkeeperwasnotfoundforquitesometimeanditwas
notuntilafterthechangeovertocotulawhenKobeVandenHeuvel
undertookthesedutiesthatthingsonthegreenkeepingfrontbeganto
looksettled.Hisresignationtowardstheendofthe1972-73season
promptedanofferfromEldonArmstrongtoresumethepositionof
greenssuperintendentanditwasnotuntilthebeginningofthenext
seasonthatanarrangementwasmadewithDougWhiting,thenamember
ofTawaServicesClub,toundertakethecareandmaintenanceofthe
greens.Itwasadifficulttime,particularlyasataspecialgeneralmeeting
on17thMarch1972thedecisionwastakentoproceedwithconversion
ofNo.1greentocotulausingstolonsfromNo.2green.
Thefirstofwhatwastobecomeamostenjoyablefunction,the"Fishand
ChipsNight",wasatwilightmatchwithTawaServicesClubmembersand
thiswasheldinthesummerof1973onthatclub'sgreen.Teamsfrom
eachclubweredrawn"outofthehat"andmembersplayedintheorder
theyweredrawn.Theloserspaidforfishandchipsandtheinitialround
ofrefreshmentsandthereafterthestoriesflowed.Thispopulareventhas
sincebecomeanannualcontestwiththehostclubrotatingeachyear.

Withtheapproachofthe1973-74seasonitbecameapparentthatanew
implementandsoilshedwasrequiredandevenwiththeincomefrom
hiringthehalltherewasinsufficientfinancetodothis.Anoticeofmotion
thatalevyof$10amemberbemadetowardsextraordinaryexpenditure
forprovisionofimprovementsandextensionstothebuildingwaspassed
attheAnnualGeneralMeeting.Subscriptionsremainingunchanged.
Themeetingwasnotifiedthatthewearingofwhiteorcreamtailored
shortswithwalksockswasnowpermissibleatonedaytournaments,
pennantsandinterclubeventsifaclubsodecided.Amotiontothiseffect
wasdulycarried.
TheNo.1greenwithitsnewcotulasurfacewaswithheldfromplayuntil
lateOctobertoencouragefurthergrowth.Memberswereinvitedtostate
theirpreferencefordiscdrawplayeitherSaturdayorSundayastheClub
hadmoreplayersthanonegreencouldaccommodate.
WithplaytemporarilylimitedtoNo.2greenwheretherewasalsoa
drainageproblem,somediscontentarosewithintheClub.However,as
thegreenssteadilyimprovedandbothbecameavailableforplay,normal
clubspiritwassoonrestored.
Apolicywasadoptedwherebyanydirectionstobeconveyedtothe
greenkeepercouldonlybedonebyeithertheGreensSuperintendentor
thePresident.Anymemberwishingtomakesuggestionsorcomments
concerningthegreensmustdosothroughtheexecutivecommittee.This
commonsenseapproachstillapplies.
Mostoftheolderfurnitureintheclubhousewasreplaced.Tablesmade
fromrejectdoorsthathadservedussowellmadewayforcafeteria
tablesfromtheNgaurangafreezingworksandchairswerepurchasedto
replacewoodenformsthatourmembershadmade.Allthereplacements
hadbeenchosenfortheirsuitabilityforstackingduringtheoffseason
whenroominthehallwasrequiredforindoorbowls.
Theseandotheracquisitionsovertheyearsaddedtothemembers
personalcomfortwhich,inadditiontothequitegoodprofitsgenerated
byawellorganisedcanteen,madethemfeelthatperhapstheClubhad
passedthe"pioneering"stage.Infactithadcomealongwaysince1960.
ThisyeartheClubearneditsfourthCentretitlewhenthefoursteam
skippedbyJohnLambertwastriumphantattheCentreChampionof
Championsevent.

Thisseasonwastoseetheextendedsoilshedcompletedandaproposal
toincludePlimmertonBowlingClubintheBrownTrophycompetition.
However,asthiswouldinvolvetheomissionofoneofthefiveclubseach
yearinordertomaintainaquadrangulartournament,theproposaldid
notproceed.
TheWomen'sSectionwasgivenapprovaltoelectitsownTreasurerand
operateabankingaccountprovidedthatitwasusedfordaytoday
transactionssuchascateringandraffles,anditwasnottoprovidefor
itemsofcapitalexpenditure.Anysurplusexceeding$100wastobe
handedovertotheMen'sSectionattheendofeachseason.
Thewomen'smembershiphadreachedatotalof25fortheseasonand
midweekplaywasdevelopinglargelyduetotheeffortsofJanMortimer.
Therewasarelationshipbetweenmembershipnumbersandamountof
playandpastexperiencehadshownthatpotentialmembershipwaslost
throughlackofmidweekcompetition.
TheincreasingdevelopmentoftheClubwasreflectedinbetteramenities,
acoolingsystemforcanteenrefreshmentsandaprintedhandbookwhich
wastheresultofeffortsbyBrianBeedell.Inanefforttobrightenthe
expanseofconcreteblockwallsattheendofthehallanothermember,
FrankDean,wascommissionedtoproduceamuralontheeastwall.The
modestlittlecornerpainting,"TheWailingWall",hadtobesacrificedfor
thismoreambitiousproject.Otheritemsthatreflectedprogresswerea
wastedisposalunitforthekitchen,hiretowelserviceforthewashrooms
andafloorpolisher.
ThiswasagainaNationalChampionshipsyearwithourgreensbeing
requiredonfouroccasions.

ofBrianMartin.Theywereapooltableandapublicaddresssystem.A
new"Glassmaster"washingmachinewasalsopurchasedforthecanteen.
ItwasthisyearthatacoachingschemewasorganisedbytheNew
ZealandBowlingAssociationwithnationalcoach,JohnFlett,holding
coachingschools.YoungbowlersoftheClubcomprisingBillGreen,Brian
MartinandJohnPooleattendedandlaterbecameverymuchinvolvedin
coachingourplayers.
Boxingwasacquiredforthepermanentupgradingofthebankswhichsaw
thereplacementofgrasssurfaceswithconcretewallscoveredwitha
bitumousandgratedrubbermixture.
ForsometimeaphotographicrecordoftheClub'spastPresidentshad
beenmootedandthiswasfinallyproceededwith.Framedgroupsof
photographswereplacedonthewesternwallofthemainhall.
ThisseasonsawtheClub'sfirstwinintheCentreMidWeekPennant
competitionandfurtherCentrehonourswereearnedbyBrianBeedell
andBillSemmenswhentheywontheAnniversaryWeekendPairs
tournament.

Interestinhiringthehallforindoorbowlsduringthewintermonthshad
beenfallingoff.InparticulartheNorthernIndoorBowlingCentrehad
beenrequiringitlessandless.TheClubnowhadalargermembership
whichincreasedthecanteenactivitysotheneedforsupplementary
incomewasless.Itwasdecidedtorestricttheindoorbowlingspaceand
plansweremadetocarpetanareafromtheeastwalltoinfrontofthe
canteen.
Licensingofsportingbodieswasabouttobecomeobligatoryandasthe
legalitieswerecomplexitwasdecidedtoengageasolicitortoactonthe
Club'sbehalf.Thelicence,theobligationsincurredandthespeculationit
attractedweretoinvolvetheClubinagreatdealofexpenseandtrouble
butithadtheeffectofraisingthestandardsofhygiene,safetyand
furnishingsconsiderably.
AHospitalnoticeboardappearedinthelobbyforthefirsttimeanditwas
decidedtodisplayaphotographofthecurrentPresidentinaconspicuous
placeintheClubhouse.

WallyGreenhalghwasawardedanHonourBadgeforoutstandingservice
totheCluboverthepastsixteenyears.Mrs.WynneMcCarter,a
foundationmember,wasbestowedwiththefirstlifemembershipofthe
Women'sSection.
ThepassingofKenFisherwasaverysadoccasionwhichpromptedthe
ExecutiveCommitteeforthefirsttimetomaketheclubhouseavailable
forafunctionfollowingKen'sfuneral.
Asketchplanandanoutlineofcosts,possiblyupto$45,000,was
preparedforacompleteupdatingofclubroomswhichincludedsome
additionsandalterations.Aspecialgeneralmeetingwastobecalledfor
memberstostudyvariousproposals.Theleastexpensiveoptionwas
adoptedwhichwasexpectedtocostatleast$20,000andcoveredsuch
mattersasemergencyexits,alarms,gasheatingtoreplacetheexisting
electricbarheaters,andafaceliftandtanksystemforthebarwhich
exaltedshrinehadnowlostitsidentityasacanteen.Drapesforthe
windowswereconsideredanecessitymainlytopreventheatloss,andthe
Women'sSectionvolunteeredtodonateandinstallthem.
Thiswasa"redletter"yearforinterclubcompetition.Forthefirsttime
ever,theClubmadea"cleansweep"oftheJimGraham,CurlyBlightand
Browntrophiesinadditiontobeingacloserunner-upfortheCentreOpen
Pennantcompetition.
AnhonoursboardtorecordCentreandhigherhonoursgainedby
memberswasobtainedandpositionedonthenorthwallofthehallinthe
clubhouse.

WiththeformationofanIndoorBowlingSectionwithintheClub,which
participatedwithsomesuccessintheindoorbowlsinterclub
competition,theproblemofbartradinginwintermonthsreceded.
Thebowlingskillsofourmemberswereagaindemonstrated,fortheClub
emulatedthesuccessoftheprecedingseasonbyretainingtheJim
Graham,CurlyBlightandBrowntrophies.
ItwasanotherNationalTournamentyearandwiththegreensplaying
exceedinglywelltheywereagainrequiredforthiscompetition.An
invitationgaladayheldonNewYearsEvefollowedbyanevening
barbequewaswarmlyappreciatedbyvisitingbowlersandclubmembers
alike.
VisitorstotheClubduringtheNationalChampionshipswerenowso
numerousandthefinancialobligationsonthePresidentmoreonerous
anotherprecedentwascreatedbythatpositionbeinggrantedan
honorarium.Suchapaymenthasbeenmadeannuallyeversince.
Ourgaladayswerenotalwayswellpatronisedandthisnecessitatedthe
oddcancellationbecauseofinsufficiententries.However,therewere
signsofincreasinginterestencouragedbythehighstandardofgreensand
hospitality,theprovisionoflunchesandincreasedsponsorships.Thiswas
veryevidentwithourannualcharitygaladaywhichwasfilledmonthsin
advance.Thedaywasanoutstandingsuccessrealising$1,500forthe
SalvationArmyEmergencyLodge.
Moreimprovementswereeffectedduringtheyear,themostnotable
beingtheupgradingofthenorthernboundaryareacompletewithfence
andbitumensealonthedriveway.

Coachingsessionshadbeenmuchinvogueoverrecentseasonswith
outsidebowlersprovidingassistance.Apanelofcoacheswasalso
appointed.Severalofourmembersweretoreceivetrainingincoaching
withconsequentbenefittoourmembersasawholeandnewand
emergingplayersinparticular.
AninterclubmidweekcompetitionwasmootedandBrianMartinwas
appointedaschieforganiserwithaviewtohavingsuchacompetition
underway,ifnotnextseasonthencertainlyinthenearfuture.
Guidelinesforadmissionofnewmemberswereestablishedbythe
ExecutiveCommitteeattheendofthebowlingseasonandbasicallythese
statedthat–
● applicationsofwives/husbandsofexistingmembersresidentinor
ratepayersoftheTawaBoroughtobegivenpriority.
● applicationsTawaresidentsorratepayersaretobegivenpriority
overotherapplicationsiftherearefiveorlessvacanciesinthe
individualsections'membershiplists.
● exceptinveryspecialcircumstancesnonewmembersaretobe
acceptedduringthemonthsofApril,May,JuneandJuly.
Dissatisfactionwiththehedgebetweenthetwogreenshadbeen
expressedfromtimetotimeandaproposaltoremovethisandreplaceit
withawoodenfencewasapproved.Thesubjectwasairedatthenext
AnnualGeneralMeetingandalthoughopinionswereevenlydividedan
appealforayear'strialwithoutafencewasdisregardedand
arrangementstoerectonewereproceededwith.
Thegreensplayedparticularlywellthisseasonthankstotheeffortsof
theEldonArmstrong,SydThompsonandLionelBearsleyteam.
Twonewtrolleysforthetransportationofmats,scoreboardsandjacks
werepurchasedduringtheseason.
TheClubwaswelltotheforeinCentreeventsthisyearwhenJohn
Lambert(Skip),EldonArmstrong,NeilMcKayandGeorgeReynoldswon
theExecutiveFoursandourteamstookouttheChampionPennant
competition.

organisedbyBrianBeedellandJohnPooleandaspartofthecelebrations
anexhibitionbowlingmatchonourgreenswasarrangedbetweenBarry
SalterofNewSouthWalesandNewZealandrepresentativePhil
Skoglund.Barrywasalsoguestspeakeratthedinner.
OurCharityGalaDay,principallyinaidoftheWhitfordBrownCentrefor
thehandicapped,almostreachedtheimpressivefigureof$2,000.Thiswas
aconsiderablesumofmoneyrequiringagreatdealofworkand
organisationbyateamheadedbyMarshallClarkandBrianBeedellwho
bothhavehadconsiderableexperiencerunningthesefunctions.The
greenswereinexcellentconditionandweregivenacarnivalatmosphere
bythegailycolouredsunumbrellaspurchasedbytheWomen'sSection.

ChampionseventsledtoasuggestionattheAnnualGeneralMeetingthat
theClubmighthavetoforegoenteringtheCentrefixturesratherthan
playourowncompetitionundertootightatimeconstraint.Fromthe
ensuingdiscussionamotionwaspassedbythemeetingwhichresolved
nottoenterateamintheCentreChampionofChampionsFours.
WhenthesubjectofChampionofChampionscompetitionwasbeingaired
attheAnnualGeneralMeetingagooddealofdissatisfactionwiththe
CentrePennantstournamentwasalsoexpressed.Themeetingresolved
thattwodaysplayforthiscompetitionwasinsufficientanda
sub-committeewasformedanddirectedtoprepareproposalsforamore
meaningfulandextendedcompetitiontoplacebeforetheWellington
BowlingCentre.
Thissub-committeeinitiallycomprisedJackBarr,WallyGreenhalgh,Roy
JarrettandJohnLambertbutbeforeithadmademuchheadwayand
followingamoveawayfromthedistrictbythefirstthreemembersit
wasreconstitutedundertheleadershipofBrianMartin.Overaperiodof
twelvemonthsthecommitteemadedirectcontactwithall45bowling
clubsthenintheWellingtonCentre.
ForthefirsttimetheNewZealandPoliceweregivenuseofbothgreens
andfacilitiesandon22ndand23rdFebruary1982theyconductedtheir
NationalTournamentwhichannualeventhasremainedwiththeClub
eversince.
ThepurchaseofamotorisedForrestroller,oneofthefirstinthisarea,
wasinkeepingwithourreputationasaprogressiveclub.Thegreenshad
neverhadsomuchrollingwithLionelBearsleyourgreenkeeper,proudly
pilotingthenewmachine–tobecomeknownasthe"MoonBuggy"–
gracefullyoverthegreens.AnewScottBonnermowerwasalso
purchasedlaterintheyear.
Otherprogresswastheimprovementofourpublicaddresssystemand
thesettingupofamplifyingequipmentbySydThompson.

combination,providinggrandplayingconditionsforourvisitors.Morning
andafternoonteasaswellaslunchesweresuppliedfor150playersand
officialsandthiswastoppedoffbythealmosttraditionalbarbequetea
whichcateredfor200people.

AdevelopmentplanandprogrammefortheClubwasdrawnupbyasub

andLaurieLewis.Thisdocumentstatedthatitwasnotintendedtobe
comprehensivebutinfactitwas.KeyareasoftheClubhadbeen
identifiedandrecommendationsweresubmittedtotheExecutive
Committeeinanattempttoplanandformulatethedevelopmentofthe
Clubinanorderlymanneroverthemediumterm.Itwastobe

Associatedwiththiseventwasthefirstmayoralreceptiontobeheldin
TawawhentheMayorentertainedtheparticipants,NewZealandBowling
AssociationcouncillorsandrepresentativesoftheCentreandofthisClub.
Twomembers,LionelBearsleywhojoinedtheClubshortlyafterits
inceptionandPaddyMillswhojoinedin1962,weregrantedlife
membershipforoutstandingserviceandattheAnnualGeneralMeeting
outgoingPresident,BarryHorsnell,hadpleasureinpresentingthesetwo
dedicatedmemberswiththeirlifemembershipbadges.
Asurveyconductedamongmembersshowedthat80wereinterestedin
playinginthenewinter-clubcompetition,consequentlyteamswere
enteredinfourgrades,involving64playerseachSaturdaymorning
playinghomeandawayalternatively.Theexperienceofplayingagainst
membersofotherclubsandongreensotherthanourownwasas
rewardingasitwasenjoyableandwasvotedpopularandsuccessful.
TawawerethewinnersinDivision1Section2andDivision2Section1.
Anewcompetition,whichwasinitiatedbyourClubandnamedtheCable
PriceToyotaKapiManaOpenFours,wasconductedinassociationwith
theTawaServicesandTitahiBayclubs.Theinauguraltournament
utilisedthegreensofthethreeclubsandwasheldon7thto9thJanuary.
Therewere56teamsenteredandtheeventwaswonbyacompositeteam
ofJohnLambert(Skip),MaxBurgess,DonAlexanderandAlexDaly.This
wastobecomeanannualeventexceptwhentheNationalChampionships
areheldinWellington,whenitwillnotbeheld.
Thisseason'sCharityGalaDayyielded$2,700,mostofwhichwasdonated
totheKenepuruHospitaltohelppurchaseanewpiano.
Newacquisitionsduringtheyearwereasoilshredderandanautomatic
timerandsiren.

John'seffortswithbackuplettersexpressingdispleasureatalterations
thatwerebeingmadetotheconceptofthecompetitionasenvisagedby
ourClub.
AquestionnairecirculatedamongourClubmemberstoascertaintheir
feelingsconcerningthedesirabilityofinstallingoutsidetoiletsadjacent
toNo.2greenshowedthatmemberswerenotinfavour.Notsomuch
becausetherewasslightlymoreagainsttheproposalthanforitbut
becauseonethirdofthemembershipsaidtheydidnotcareordidnot
bothertovote.
Amostusefulpre-seasonacquisitionwastheinstallationintheeastern
endofthemainhalloftwoextractorfanswhichgreatlyimprovedthe
ventilationofthisareaduringthesummermonths.
Theendofthe1984-85seasonmarkedthetwenty-fifthanniversaryofthe
formationoftheClubandthisoccasionwassuitablycelebratedbya
Jubileedinnerintheclubhouseonclosingnight.Thedinnerwasa
splendidoccasionwithJackBarrofficiatingasMasterofCeremonies,a
taskheperformedmostcompetently.Acakewith25lightedcandleswas
cutbyEldonArmstrongandChookFowler,twofoundermembers.and
thosepresentwereaddressedbythewellknownWellingtonandNew
Zealandcricketer,EvanGray.
