SAFETY01 SEAT BELTS

SEAT BELTS:

Seat-belt is a safety device designedto secure the occupant of the vehicle.Use of seat-belt reduces the chanceof injury and severity of injury in caseof an accident. TATA MOTORSstrongly recommends that all theoccupants should always wear seat-belts while travelling, irrespective ofjourney duration.

Your vehicle is equipped with seatbelts, for front and rear seats as a partof occupant restraint system.

WARNINGBe sure everyone in your vehicle isseated and using a seat beltproperly.

In normal driving, the belt lets youmove freely in your seat. In case of anaccident or sudden braking, inertia reelautomatically tightens the belt to helprestrain your body.

This vehicle has three point inertia reeltype for front and rear seat belts in theout board positions and a lap belt formiddle passenger on rear seat. The lapbelt has a manually adjusted belt thatfits across the hip bone. Make surethat your seat is adjusted to a gooddriving position and the back of theseat is upright.

Importance of Wearing Seat Belt :

1. It will help to keep you in the properposition when the air bag inflates.

2. Reduces the risk of harm in rollover, side or rear impact collisions

3. Reduces the risk of harm infrontal/angular collisions that arenot enough to activate the air bag.

4. Reduces the risk of being throwninside the vehicle in case of acollision.

NOTEDo not bleach or dye seat belts asthis may severely weaken them. Ina crash they may not be able toprovide adequate protection. Clean-ing should be carried out using mildsoap and water only.

WARNINGMake sure that the seat belts arenot twisted which can cause injuryin a collision as the full width of thebelt isn’t available to absorb theimpact. This puts more force on thebones beneath the belt, which couldcause serious injury.

The maximum protection which seatbelts can offer is only achieved if youare correctly seated. The seat backshould not be tilted too far back.

Page 11: TATA ZEST OSB JULY 2016

SAFETY 01SEAT BELTS

How to use seat belts: 1. Pull the belt tongue across yourbody and insert it into the buckle.

2. Check and ensure that the belt isnot twisted.

3. Position the lap portion of the beltas low as possible across your hipbone.

4. Pull up the shoulder part of the beltto remove the slack. Make sure thatthe belt goes over your collar bonesand across chest.

5. To unlatch the belt, press the redbutton on the buckle. Guide the beltto the pillar as it retracts.

WARNING1. The belts are intended for adult

occupants only.

2. Each belt should be used by oneoccupant only. The belt must notbe put round a child, seated onpassengers lap.

3. Use approved child restraintsystem for children

4. If the belt was in use in a seriousaccident or shows signs of severefraying / damage or of having beencut, replace it with an approvedbelt kit.

5. The belt must not be altered ormodified during use and if requiredto be replaced, then it should bereplaced, by TATA MOTORSAuthorized Service Centre only.

Lap belt:

Pull the belt tongue to the desiredlength. Insert it into the buckle untilyou hear a click.

Adjust the belt length. To lengthen thebelt, hold the tongue at a right angleto the webbing and pull. To shorten, pull the loose end of the webbing. Tounfasten, depress the button in thebuckle.

WARNINGPositioning the lap portion of theSeat Belt too high can be danger-ous as in a collision; this wouldconcentrate the impact force directlyon the abdominal area, causingserious injury. Wear the lap portionof the belt snugly and as low aspossible.

Pregnant Woman:

A pregnant woman should wear a Lap-shoulder belt and the lap portion shouldbe worn as low as possible, below thewomb, throughout the pregnancy. When a safety belt is worn properly, itis more likely that the foetus will notbe hurt in a crash. Pregnant womenshould wear the lap part of the beltacross the thighs and as snug acrossthe hips as possible. Keep the belt lowso that it does not come across theabdomen. By doing this, the strongstructure of the hips will take the forceif there is a collision.

SAFETYSEAT BELTS 01CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM (CRS):

TATA MOTORS strongly recommendsthe use of Child Restraint Systems(CRS) for all children up to age of 12years.

Children kept unrestrained whiletravelling, may face serious injuries incase of an accident.

Selection and Installation of CRS:

Always select the child restraintsystem that complies with latestsafety standards (AIS 072, ECER44).The CRS are classified accord-ing to the child's size, height andweight. Select the appropriate CRS foryour child. Ensure that the child fitsproperly in the CRS and CRS issecurely installed in the vehicle.

For installation, please refer CRSmanufacturer’s instruction manual.

Recommended CRS position:

The suitability of seat position for carriage of children and recommended cat-egory of child restraint system is shown in the table below.

SAFETY SEAT BELTS01Storage for CRS:

Always secure CRS safely in thevehicle or stow it in the luggagecompartment if not being used.

While the vehicle is in motion an unre-strained CRS could flung through thevehicle interior in the event of a sud-den braking, maneuver or an accident. This could cause injuries to the travel-ling occupants.

WARNINGReplace CRS that has withstood anyforce during an accident as it couldhave sustained damage which maynot be visible.

Check list:

1. Never carry children on somebody’slap when vehicle is in motion.

2. Always secure children in thevehicle in a CRS. The CRS mustbe suitable for the child’s height, weight and build.

3. Observe the instructions from themanufacturer of the CRS andalways keep the instruction manualin the vehicle.

4. Always make sure that the seatbelt routing is correct for childrenand they are sitting in the correctposition.

5. Do not leave any toys or otherobjects loose in the CRS or on theseat while the vehicle is in motion.

WARNINGEach CRS should be used for onechild only.

E - KEYS:

An E-Key is an electronic access andauthorization system which is providedas a standard feature on your vehicle.Your vehicle is provided with anE-Key. Each Key is specific to theimmobilizer of your vehicle.

Unlocking principle:

The transponder which is built into theignition E-Key carries a unique identi-fication code. The vehicle unlocks whenthe code on the E-Key matches withthe code on the Body Control Module(BCM).

Engine Starting:

When the key is inserted and theignition is switched ‘ON’, all codes arecommunicated within concernedcomponents (E-Key, Immobilizer andEMS). The engine will start only if allthe codes match.

Loss of keys :

If one of the E-Key is lost, contact yournearest TATA MOTORS authoriseddealer as soon as possible to have thelost key deactivated. The secondoriginal E-Key is required for makingadditional E-Keys. If both the E-Keysare lost contact TATA MOTORSauthorised dealer.

WARNING

1. Do not turn ‘ON’ ignition switchby using E-key with any type ofmetal wound around its grip or incontact with it. This may bedetected as abnormal conditionby immobilizer and preventengine from starting.

2. Do not leave the E-key in areasof high temperature. Thetransponder in it will behaveabnormally when reused.

3. Do not try to start the vehiclewhen the Immobilizer indicator

lamp on the instrument cluster isglowing. In this condition thevehicle will not start and thevehicle’s battery will also bedrained due to frequent cranking.

SAFETY SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM - AIR BAGS01SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTSYSTEM- AIR BAGS : (If fitted)

• The frontal air bags (driver andpassenger) are safety devicesdesigned to protect the occupantsin the event of a medium or highintensity collision, which acts as acushion (bag) between theoccupant and the steering wheel inthe case of driver or the dashboardin case of co-driver.

• In the event of a collision, an airbagECU is so designed to processsignals from the sensor, to detectthe severity of collision and accord-ingly trigger the inflation of air bagsat the same time it will unlock alldoors with hazard light ‘ON’(Continuous blinking). Air bags arenot designed to inflate in rollover, rear side or slow speed angularcrashes because the necessaryprotection can be achieved by theseat belt alone.

• Air bags(s) may only deploy whenthe ignition switch is ‘ON’. Theinflating air bag deploys out of thesteering wheel for the driver and fromthe dash board for co-driver. Thisaction takes place in a fraction ofsecond.

• The air bags are filled with apropellant gas (nitrogen). Themovement of the driver and of thefront passenger is cushioned whenthey make contact with the fullyinflated airbag and the risk of injuryto head and chest is reduced. Theair bag then deflates subsequentlyto such an extent, after anaccident, to again provide a clearview forward. You may hear a noisealong with some smoke, dust andsmell of burnt propellant immedi-ately after the air bag has inflated.DO NOT PANIC as this is normaland is not an indication of fire inthe vehicle.

WARNINGAlways maintain an adequatedistance between yourself and theairbags. Always grip the steeringwheel on the rim, with your handsin the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clockpositions, to minimize the risk ofinjury to the hands or arms in theevent of the airbag being triggered.

WARNINGNo part of your body (example feet, knees), objects and accessoriesshould be within close proximity tothe PAB module as it could obstructthe operation of the air bag.

Deployed air bags and seat beltpre-tensioners cannot protect youin another collision. Have the airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners,replaced by a TATA MOTORSAuthorized Service Centre immedi-ately.

SAFETY ABS, EBD, EDTC & CSC01ANTI- LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM(ABS): (If provided)

ABS allows braking without losingtractional control, prevents wheels fromlocking up and avoids uncontrolledskidding.

NOTE

When ABS is active, the driver willfeel the brake pedal pulsating, whichis normal.

NOTEIf the ABS warning lamp lights upthen there is a malfunction in theABS system (the standard brakingsystem will however function) and thevehicle should be driven cautiouslyto the nearest TATA MOTORSAuthorized Service Centre only.

WARNINGThe fact that a vehicle is fitted withABS must never tempt the driver intotaking risks that could affect his/her

safety or that of others. In all casesit remains the driver’s responsibilityto drive within safety margins, taking into consideration prevailingweather and traffic conditions.

ELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCE DIS-TRIBUTION (EBD) - if provided:

EBD optimizes braking pressure dis-tribution between front and rear axleto ensure vehicle stability.

ENGINE DRAG TORQUE CONTROL(EDTC) - if provided:

On slippery road conditions during,

1. In- gear Braking or

2. Shift down of gear or

3. Sudden throttle release on a curveroad.

This causes high Engine drag on thedriven wheel resulting into brake slipsituations without any brake applica-tion. This makes vehicle highly under-steerable.

EDTC controls such brake slip on thedriven wheels by increasing the enginetorque to makes the vehicle stable andsteerable.

CORNERING STABILITY CONTROL(CSC) - if provided:

“Corner stability Control” supports /stabilizes vehicle during partialbraking in curves by reducing pressureat required inner wheel of the vehicle.

This helps to reduce probability ofvehicle over steering during cornering.

Page 21: TATA ZEST OSB JULY 2016

SAFETYDRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITION 01DRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITION:

Driving Through Water :

Your vehicle’s engine may getseriously damaged if attempted todrive through deep water.

If at all the situation demands that youhave to drive through water then;

• Keep engine in higher RPM andcrawl the vehicle in low gear.

• After driving through water applybrakes several times to dry linersand to regain original braking.

Do not attempt to start the engineif vehicle gets flooded due towater. Tow the vehicle to a safeplace.

Take the vehicle to the nearest TATAMOTORS authorised workshop tocheck entry of water in cylinders.

If water has entered the engine, gearbox or transfer case, thelubricants will have to be replaced. Getthe starter and alternator checked.

Driving on a Rainy Day :

• Check brakes, steering andwindows.

• Check tyres for wear and tyrepressure.

• Check wiper blades for properfunctioning.

• Avoid harsh braking and sharpturns. It may cause loss of controland lead to a skid.

• For slowing down, shift to lowergears and brake gently.

• Keep lights ON if visibility is poor.

Night Driving :

• Dip the head lamp for oncomingtraffic during night driving.

• Maintain a speed such that you canstop within illuminated distance ofhead lamps.

• Use head lamp main/dip beam toalert other road users on turns/cross roads etc.

• Use side indicators for lane changeor turning.

• Put on hazard warning switch incase of hazardous parking or ifyour vehicle is disabled to warn thepassing traffic.

Page 22: TATA ZEST OSB JULY 2016

22

SAFETY DRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITION01Climbing Sharp Gradients onLoose Surfaces :

• Start off smoothly in any suitablegear. Apply power smoothly so thatthere is no loss of traction by over-revving of the engine.

• Select the appropriate gear so thatgear changing in the middle of theclimb is not required.

• Changing gears in the middle of theclimb can cause loss ofmomentum and engine stalling.Shifting to a lower gear has to bedone cautiously to avoid loss oftraction.

• If the wheels start to slip within fewfeet of the end of the climb, motioncan be maintained by swinging thesteered wheels left and right, thereby providing increased grip.

Descending Sharp Gradients :

• Depending on the severity of thegradient, shift into appropriate gear.Use engine braking judiciouslywithout over-revving the engine.

• Brake application under suchsituations should be done verysmoothly to avoid loss of control.Select appropriate gear so that gearchanging or clutch disengagementis not involved while descendingthe gradient.

would normally require thesupport of others alone in thevehicle.

On hot, sunny days, tempera-tures in a closed vehicle couldquickly become high enough tocause severe or possibly fatalinjuries to occupants.

• Do not use the recirculation modefor longer periods as “stale” airmay result in fatigue in the driverand occupants, divert yourattention and also cause thewindows to mist up. Switch to“Fresh” air mode as soon as thewindows begin misting up.

• Do not adjust the heating and airconditioning controls while drivingso that full attention may be givento vehicle operation.

NOTE• Condensation starts inside the air

conditioning unit when the airconditioner is running, and issafely discharged underneathyour vehicle. Traces of water onthe ground are therefore normal.

• After parking in the sun, drive for2 or 3 minutes with the windowsopen to vent hot air from thepassenger compartment. Then, close the windows. This allows theair conditioner to cool theinterior more quickly.

• The air conditioning systemshould be operated for approx.10 minutes at least once a month. This helps prevent damage to thesystem due to lack of lubrication.

FUEL SAVING TIPS STARTING & DRIVING 06FUEL SAVING TIPS :

Your vehicle's fuel economy is mainlydependent on your style of driving.

To operate your vehicle aseconomically as possible, use thefollowing driving suggestions.

Avoid Excessive Idling :

Stop the engine and start it again, ifyou have to wait for more than a minute.e.g. at traffic signals.

Avoid fast starts and unnecessarystops :

Start off slowly from traffic lights or stopsigns to prevent increased fuelconsumption and shortening of enginelife. Avoid unnecessary deceleration(stopping or slowing down) and thenacceleration which uses more fuel.

Gear shifting :

Always follow the gear shiftingrecommendations provided oninstrument cluster for selected models.

Always maintain clean air-filter:

The amount of air supplied will reducedue to clogged air-filter, resulting inwastage of fuel due to incompletecombustion.

Avoid incorrect tyre pressure :

Under-inflated tyres result in increasedrunning resistance of the tyres, leadingto wastage of fuel.

(Refer tyre maintenance section)

Proper Driving Practices :

Keep a safe distance from othervehicles to avoid braking suddenly.

NOTEDo not rest your foot on the clutchpedal. It does not allow full enginepower to be transmitted to thevehicle and reduces clutch life.

GOOD DRIVING PRACTICES & RUNNING-IN PERIODSTARTING & DRIVING06GOOD DRIVING PRACTICES:

• Gear shifting should be gradualaccording to varying speeds. Avoidrapid acceleration and prolongedhigh speed running of the enginewhile using the new vehicle for thefirst 1500-1800 km of operation.

• Slow down before shifting to a lowergear. This will help for avoiding rev-ving of the engine causing damage.

• Avoid frequent brake applicationwhich can cause overheating ofbrakes.

• Slower the vehicle speed whiletravelling in cross winds. This givesmuch better control over thevehicle.

• Avoid high speed when corneringor turning.

• Make sure that vehicle is com-pletely stationary before you at-tempt to shift in reverse gear. Thiswill avoid damage to the transaxle.

• Drive slowly on wet roads.

When the vehicle leaves the roadway,do not steer sharply. Slow downslightly before pulling back into thetravel lanes.

RUNNING-IN PERIOD :

Avoid rapid acceleration and prolongedhigh speed running of the engine whileusing the new vehicle for the first 1500-1800 km of operation.

Do not exceed the following roadspeeds during running in period.

Quadrajet Revotron

Gear Speed Speed(kmph) (kmph)

2nd 30 40

3rd 50 60

4th 70 80

5th 80 100

Before you shift to reverse gear, bringyour vehicle to a complete stop anddepress the clutch pedal fully.

Do not shift into reverse gear when thevehicle is moving forward.

While shifting the gears, it isrecommended to shift at the speedsgiven in the table.

You can get extra braking from theengine when slowing down by shiftingto a lower gear.

This can help you to maintain a safespeed and prevent your brakes fromoverheating while going down a steephill.

NOTEAvoid excessive revving up ofengine rpm.

Idling the engine for long durationmust be avoided.

BRAKES & BRAKINGSTARTING & DRIVING06BRAKES & BRAKING:

The brake system on your vehicle isan advanced dual circuit, diagonal splitvacuum assisted hydraulic brakesystem.

WARNINGNever use the brake pedal as afootrest. Never depress the brakepedal and the accelerator pedal atthe same time.

Water on brake discs and brakepads affects braking:

Driving in rain and slush or in a vehiclewash can cause water to collect onthe brake discs and pads. This willcause a delay in braking effect whenthe pedal is pressed. To avoid such adelay when the brakes are needed, depress the pedal occasionally whendriving through rain, slush etc.

This will remove the water from thebrakes. Check that brake applicationfeels normal. This should also be done

after washing or starting in very dampor cold weather.

Severe strain on the brake system:

The brakes will be subject to severestrain when driving in mountains orhilly areas, or when towing. Vehiclespeed is usually slower, which meansthat the cooling of the brakes is lessefficient than when driving on levelroads. To reduce the strain on thebrakes, shift into a lower gear and letthe engine help with the braking. Donot forget that, if you are towing, thebrakes will be subjected to a greaterthan normal load.

WARNINGIf you shift gear down on a slipperyroad surface in an attempt toincrease the engine's braking effect, the wheels could lose their grip. Thismay lead to increased danger ofskidding and accidents. Do not shiftdown for additional engine brakingon a slippery road surface.

STOPPING THE ENGINE:

Before switching off the engine, run theengine in idle condition for at least 30seconds and then switch off. This willallow the engine oil to lubricate theturbocharger, till its speed is fullyreduced and also allow the unit to cooldown.

WARNINGA quick burst on the acceleleratorbefore turning off the engine servesabsolutely no practical purpose, itwastes fuel and is damagingespecially to turbocharged engine.

The above precautions will ensuresatisfactory life and performance fromthe turbocharger, till its speed is fullyreduced and also allow the unit to cooldown.

WARNINGDo not switch the engine off when itis running at high speed. If you do,the turbocharger will continuerunning after the engine oil pressure

Page 89: TATA ZEST OSB JULY 2016

89

BRAKES & BRAKING STARTING & DRIVING 06has dropped to zero. This will leadto premature turbocharger bearingwear.

NOTEIf the engine fails to start, try torestart the engine after few minutes.Continuous cranking will causedamage to the starter motor. If theengine fails to start, Contact TATAMOTORS Authorized ServiceCentre.

1 2 3

1. Under Excessive Sideinflation Tread Wear

2. Correct Tyre PressureTyre Wear Uniform

3. Over Excessive Centreinflation Tread Wear

Check for inflation and condition of yourvehicle tyres periodically.

Inflation :Check the pressure in the tyres whenthey are cold.

You should have your own tyre pressuregauge and use it at all times. This

makes it easier for you to tell if pressureloss is caused by a tyre problem andnot by variation between gauges.

Keeping the tyres properly inflatedgives you the best combination of ridingcomfort, handling, tyre life and betterfuel efficiency.

Over inflation of tyres makes the vehicleride bumpy and harsh. Tyres are moreprone to uneven wear and damage fromroad hazards.

Under inflated tyres reduce yourcomfort in vehicle handling and areprone to failures due to hightemperature. They also cause unevenwear and more fuel consumption.

Recommended Tyre Pressures(185/60 R15 / 175/65 R14 / 175/70 R14)

WHEELS TYRE PRESSURE

Front 34 psi / 2.35 barRear 34 psi / 2.35 bar

Spare Wheel 34 psi / 2.35 bar

NOTEEvery time you check inflationpressure, you should also examinetyres for damage, trapping of foreignobjects in the treads and wear.

The recommended tyre pressure ismentioned as a permissible range inwhich tyre pressure can be adjusted. The higher value is recommended forgetting better fuel economy and lowervalue is for better ride comfort.

Page 128: TATA ZEST OSB JULY 2016

128

NOTE

• If you notice bumps or bulges inthe tread or the side of the tyre, replace the tyre.

• If there are cuts, splits or cracksin the side of the tyre, replace thetyre.

• Replace tyre if excessive treadwear or non uniform tyre wear isnoticed.

Special care for tubeless tyres :

1. While removing tyre from wheel rimand mounting it back on wheel rim, take precautions not to damagetyre bead. Use tyre removal andassembly machines. Damage orcut on tyre bead may causegradual loss of air and deflation oftyre.

2. Do not scratch inside of tubelesstyre with metallic or sharp object.Tubeless tyres are coated withimpermeable layer of rubber frominside which holds the air insidethe tyre. Removal of this layer dueto scratching may cause gradualloss of air and deflation.

3. If wheel rim gets damaged inservice, get the wheel rim repaired/replaced immediately. Running thevehicle with damaged rim maycause deflation of tyre andsubsequent dislodging of tyre fromrim.

TYRESMAINTENANCE & SERVICING084. Maintain recommended inflation

pressure. Over-inflation, inparticular, may cause puncture orbursting of tyre.

NOTE

Life and wear pattern of tyresdepends on various parameters liketyre pressure, wheel alignment, wheel balancing, tyre rotation, etc.It also largely depends on vehiclespeed, load carried, usage, drivinghabits, road conditions, tyre quality, etc. In case fault is suspected tobe due to poor quality of tyres, thesame may be taken up withconcerned tyre manufacturer.

Tyre Pressure Sticker Location :

Page 129: TATA ZEST OSB JULY 2016

129

TYRES MAINTENANCE & SERVICING 08Tyre Rotation : The illustrations shows how to rotate

tyres when normal spare wheel isincluded in tyre rotation.

Wheel alignment :

Incorrect wheel alignment causesexcessive and uneven tyre wear.Check wheel alignment at specifiedintervals. Wheel alignment values aregiven below :

Front Rear

Caster 3.10 + 45’ ---

Camber 30’ + 30’ -52’ + 30’

Toe in - 12’ +15’

Toe Out 0’ to -13’ -

Check and maintain tyre pressureperiodically to obtain longer tyre life.To help increase tyre life and distribute

wear more evenly you should havetyres rotated at specified intervals orearlier depending on the operation ofvehicle.

Wheel Balancing :

Wheels of your vehicle are balancedfor better ride comfort and longer tyrelife. Balancing needs to be donewhenever tyre is removed from rim.

1. Permissible imbalance for tyre withrim = 250 gm-cm max.

2. Total balance weight should bewithin 140 gms on each side.

3. Relocate the tyre if the weightrequired to balance is more than140 gm.

4. Balance weights are available from10 gms to 140 gms in steps ofevery 10 gms and from 15 gms to135 gms in steps of every 10 gms.

5. Do not use more than one balanceweight on one side.

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD)SYSTEM:

On board Diagnostics or OBD is anautomotive term referring to a vehicle’sself Diagnostic and reporting capability. The OBD system allows continuousdiagnosis of the components of thevehicle correlated with emissions. Thissystem warns the driver, by turning“ON” the Malfunction Indication lamp(MIL) on the instrument cluster, whena fault causes emission levels toincrease.

The OBD system also has a diagnosticconnector that can be interfaced withappropriate diagnostic tools, whichmakes it possible to read the faultcodes stored in the Electronic ControlUnit, together with a series of specificparameters for Engine operation andDiagnosis. This check can also becarried out by the traffic police.

To access the diagnostic connector, open the fuse box cover which is
