DESCRIPTION

Sinister film poster analysis

TRANSCRIPT

  • The cracked and deteriorated nature of the wall paint suggests that the place is isolated, making the girl seem more innocent and at risk.

Underneath the main image is the credit block. This includes names of people who were involved in the making of the film. This list gives the audience the chance to see who is in the film and who has made it, and if they recognise any names, they can already begin to build a preconception of what the film will be like , based on their opinion on their previous films. Beneath credits are the production company logos, which again show the audience what to expect as they may have a reputation for being a good or bad film company.

The background of the poster is grim and dull, which extremely makes the blood painted image and the dark masterhead stand out to the audience. This connotes that the film will have a dark and spooky element. The colours used are relatively dull and desaturated, which creates a gloomy effect, which shows the horror genre. However, the use of desaturated colour gives the very dark and red blood even more emphasis as it is so different. Bringing emphasis on the blood makes the poster more graphic and shows the horror element. Blood is also something usually associated with horror films. The blood suggests that the film will contain of violence and frightening scenes.

The setting of the poster is a white room within a house. The colour white can represent an absence of colour reflecting the mood of the poster as soulless and can symbolize goodness and safety, giving a confounding affect towards the audience as this colour isnt often associated with horror films.

The tagline under the title is also very significant as it creates the context for the narrative, which also links heavily to the image below. It also creates a mysterious element towards the audience, making them wonder what may happen in this film.

The bold title of the poster has a font which is typically creepy and plays on the title sinister. This presents a supernatural impression towards the audience. The dark colour of the title also contrasts with the bright background and makes it stand out to the viewers, creating a main focus point.

The white clothing indicates that this female is a hero and is an innocent character in Propps theory. This is due to the colour white being associated with innocence, goodness and purity. The main image is a girl walking with her hand in blood. From this, the audience may assume that this is the villain or someone involved in the reason why the blood is covered on the wall. The enigma on the poster will make the audience question why the girl is there and what shes doing, the poster looks creepy in the way that the bloody face on the wall is looking directly at the audience, creating direct address. This connotes that during the film a scary face may pop up at any unexpected time to scare the audience, which is rather common in a horror film.

The blooded face looks as if it has been splashed onto the wall, which then following a little girls hand on the blood makes it equally disturbing and terrifying. This will make the audience feel uncomfortable, as they can see a blooded face with demonic eyes looking directly forward, straight at the audience making it look creepy and supernatural feeling. This immediately declares that it is in fact a horror film.
