History of Mainstream Pop• Mainstream pop is the common current music being listened to

by the public.• Pop music often borrows elements from other styles of music

which is also popular and this would make the music appealing to a larger audience.

• The most popular single/ album can be identified through weekly music charts either on the radio or in music magazines.

• Subcultures oppose the mainstream music but even though these subcultures exist, mainstream pop continues to be the most popular music genre.

Imagery used in Mainstream Pop Music Magazines

• Colours: Most mainstream music magazines such as Billboard use a limited colour palate and maintain these colours throughout the magazine.

• Images: Images featured in articles, contents or front cover have to be about the featured artists or somehow link to an article written about that particular artists somewhere in the magazine. On the front cover, most mainstream pop magazines use a single striking image and link the main coverline to the artist. However, Smash Hits uses a lot of images on the front cover and this makes the front cover look a bit cluttered or over crowded.
