What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience. A profession film distributor finds a marketing strategy for the film, the media by which the film will be made for viewing, the target audience and the release date. The film may be shown directly to the public or through a movie theatre, television or personal home viewing .e.g. DVD ,on demand or for download.

Examples of distribution companies

Newmarket films are a company which look to produce, and distribute diverse films. Newmarket distributed the film Momento which is a psychological thriller. I think this company would distribute our film as it is a psychological thriller like Momento and is also I fairly diverse film.

Kaleidoscope film distribution work with independent films as well as psychological thrillers I think they would distribute our film as we are a psychological thriller. This company is also based in the Uk which is where the majority of our audience will be.

Disney pictures tend to produce family films which include adventures, fantasy, and is generally aimed at children. It is very unlikely that Disney would produce our film as out film is not particularly child friendly.

Previously released films

Our film will be distributed both in the Uk and in the US.

Our film is set in Britain; therefore will be more relatable to the British population. The cast are also British meaning that people are more likely to understand and empathies with the characters as they can draw similarities between themselves and the characters.

The film will also be distributed in the Us as Psychological thriller are very popular there; furthermore, many of the psychological thrillers existing already are also American and have been distributed I America.

Is your film going to be in the U.k. only ?

It is important to choose a specific date and time of year which you will release your film.

A good time to release a psychological thriller may be around Halloween as people are looking for films which will put them on edge and get them involved I the spooky Halloween atmosphere.

To inform people as to why they should watch your film it is important to create a trailer which conveys the mood and genre of the film. One place where you could advertise your film is Facebook as many popular trailers are uploaded and shared between friendship groups meaning that people are more likely to see your trailer and want to watch your film.

It is important to also create posters and post pictures on social media of the cast in character.

Marketing strategies

Self distribution is another way of distributing your film. This is when a film maker independently distributes their film without the use of a distribution company.

An advantage to this is that you don’t have a large company name overshadowing your film; in addition, the film maker is also able to keep all the money for their film rather than paying the distributor a large sum.

However, self distribution is very difficult as the film maker will have to take time to both create the film as well as distribute it, therefore it can be very time consuming. Furthermore, the actual distribution company may draw in more viewers as distribution company's have a reputation for popular well made films for example Universal and Sony create many popular films therefore a larger audience will be drawn.
