ADP Heart Rate and Exercise Task Prior Learning Statement In preparation for undertaking this assessment and learning task it is expected that students have been guided through the circulatory system and respiratory system of the basic physiology unit of the ADP course. Explanation and applied scenarios that allow for understanding of the following terms/concepts should be provided: Heart rate, theoretical heat rate max and recovery heart rate Lactate threshold (or anaerobic threshold or Lactate inflection point) An emphasis to students that every athlete’s physiology is different. ADP Heart Rate and Exercise Task

Prior Learning StatementIn preparation for undertaking this assessment and learning task it is expected that students have been guided through the circulatory system and respiratory system of the basic physiology unit of the ADP course. Explanation and applied scenarios that allow for understanding of the following terms/concepts should be provided:

Heart rate, theoretical heat rate max and recovery heart rate Lactate threshold (or anaerobic threshold or Lactate inflection point) An emphasis to students that every athlete’s physiology is different. Knowing your own

exercise physiology/rates can help athletes to improve performance.

Criteria Assessed4         communicate ideas and information

5        demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors that influence sporting performance

AimTo investigate heart rate response to exercise.

Exercise Task (Modify to suit) Resting HR is taken prior to exercise Four subjects with HR monitors ride for 6 minutes on stationary bikes (or alternative) whilst

intensity is progressively increased each minute HR is taken at the end of each minute HR is also taken for 6 minutes of recovery at level 2 (or similar low intensity activity, ie

walking) Please use the table below for recording (modify to suit)

Time Resistance/Speed/Intensity Heart Rate Recorded0 (resting heart rate) NA1 22 43 64 85 106 127 (recovery  begins) 28 29 210 211 212 2

Assessment Task

Please prepare a graph (preferably using excel) that represents the results, including recovery, for each subject. Please make sure you give your graph a title and label the axes.

Discussion questions (please word process and submit for assessment with your graph)

1. Please describe the relationship between exercise and heart rate as shown in your graph.2. Please discuss the reasons why heart rate increases during exercise.3. How is maximum heart rate calculated? Did any subjects reach their theoretical heart rate

maximum?4. What is lactate threshold? (use lactate inflection point or anaerobic threshold if preferred) 5. If we assume lactate threshold is reached at 85% of heart rate max please identify at what

point did each subject reach their lactate threshold?6. Please choose two of the subjects and compare their heart rate responses during the

exercise and recovery periods. Please make any observations you can about these subjects’ aerobic fitness levels paying particular attention to subjects’ recovery heartrate ie difference between exercise heart rate and heart rate after 6 minutes of recovery. Please ensure you use figures from your graph to support your observations.

Assessment Guidelines
