TAS Rugby Carnival2016
TAS Director of Co-curricular and Carnival Convenor, Mr Will Caldwell
Since its inception, the TAS Rugby Carnival has grown to become the largest primary-aged rugby carnival in Australia – and it is a great privilege for us to again host what is truly a special event.
It is a pleasure to welcome so many players, coaches, parents and supporters willing to travel what is for many, a considerable distance, to help celebrate all that is good in school rugby.
Rugby has a special reputation for forging bonds between players from distant parts and different cultures and backgrounds and we are proud that this carnival creates a great opportunity for the camaraderie and sharing of spirit that the game is famous for.
This is also a very important event for the Armidale community and we thank the sponsors, organisers and volunteers for their efforts in making this possible. Particular thanks to BLK who remain our carnival sponsor and have given us great support over the years.
TAS Headmaster, Mr Murray Guest
Murray Guest
When the first TAS Rugby Carnival was held in 2005, few of us could haveimagined how large it would become. That inaugural carnival attracted 18 teams and some 360 players, with renowned rugby schools competing alongside local school and club sides. The carnival has always been about young people having fun, experiencing rugby and meeting people in a carnival atmosphere. During the past decade many friendships have been made and strengthened on the playing fields and on the sidelines, here at the carnival.
For our own boys, the carnival is also part of a broad, inclusive, co-curricular program involving sport, the creative arts, public speaking and debating, and student clubs that engage young people to find their passion in life. Apart from the opportunity it gives them, the TAS Rugby Carnival also reaffirms the School’s passion for positive engagement with our wider community something that is only strengthened from year to year. Thank you for your support for the 2016 carnival.
Will Caldwell

ITINERARY
Referees The referees at the carnival are part of a program for the development of young referees in NSW. The program, which has been running since 1999, identifies young referees (15-18 years) in their home zones as referees with enthusiasm and ability. TAS is thrilled that a number of our young referees have been selected for carnival duties in 2016.
BLK Team of the Carnival Award Awards
This award is presented to the team that performs well in all off-field activities as well as displaying impeccable sportsmanship on the field. It is the culmination of all aspects of the weekend and is the highest honour of the carnival.
All teams and referees vote for this award, so please keep this in mind over the weekend.
Peter Playford
Guest of Honour, Mr Peter PlayfordFormer Australian Schoolboys winger Peter Playford made his State debut for the Waratahs in 2000, against Argentina.
After spending 2003 and 2004 focusing on his economics degree at Sydney University, Peter returned to senior rugby and scored a record 29 tries for Sydney University in the 2005 Tooheys New Cup. He was selected for the Waratahs’ tour of Eastern Europe before joining the Tasman Makos for their debut season in the Air New Zealand Cup in 2006. Peter was the Makos’ leading try scorer for the season, including a four-try haul in the side’s 56-16 win over Northland. He joined the Brumbies in 2007 on a two season deal to play in the Super 14 competition. He returned to the Waratahs in 2009 and retired from playing rugby after the 2009 Super 14 season as a result of injury.
Continuing his passion for the game, he commenced coaching duties with Sydney University Colts and in 2014 he was appointed as assistant coach of the Sydney Stars team for the inaugural season of the National Rugby Championship, and became head coach the following year. In the non-rugby world, he is General Manager - Sunshades Eyewear. In 2016 Peter has taken on the position of CEO of the Country Eagles NRC team and we welcome him to the Carnival as our Guest of Honour.
