Campus Accolades

Northeast Campus, Dr. Larry Darlage, President

1. Ms. Ty Fagan, a teacher at the TCC Children’s Center, was awarded the Young Professional of the Year award at the Celebration of Champions banquet on April 24th. 2. Maddalena DeNicola, Instructor of German/ESOL, along with ten German students participated in the 11th annual Deutscher Samstag (German Saturday) at UNT on April 13th.

3. Kimberly Eason and Carey Miller, Academic Advisors, of the NE Advising and Counseling Department, will be presenting Intelligent Advising-Reaching all Students through Multiple Intelligences at the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah in October 2013.

4. Richard Hutchinson, Mayor of Haltom City and also an Adjunct at TCC, presented “ The Iroquois Confederation in the American Revolution” for the Sons of the American Revolution on Saturday, April 30th.

5. Karmien Bowman, Associate Professor of Art, chaperoned NECAPS (Student Art Organization at NE) Students at the annual Mayfest TCC showcase where she demonstrated on the wheel and firing RAku for all the visitors at the four day event at Trinity Park. TCC NE has never missed the event since the first Mayfest over 24 years ago. Karmien also has been chosen to be on the Town of Flower Mound Arts Parks and Library Board for another two years.

6. Rosemary Mendez, Professor of Education, has a photo that has been selected to be shown in the 897 Square exhibition at Galley 76102 from June 13th through July 31st. The photo selected was the result of a contest that Rosemary entered.

7. Cynthia Baw, Associate Professor of English, and many of her students attended a three

hour training session during Child Abuse Prevention Month entitled Stewards of Children. This program is a revolutionary sexual abuse program created by the Darkness to Light Foundation and locally offered by the Alliance for Children. The program educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for organizations, schools, and anyone who serves children and youth. Many of Ms. Baw’s students who plan to enter nursing and other medical professions, teaching, law enforcement, counseling and social work attended this training.

8. The NE Campus Speech and Debate team announced their recent success at the Phi Rho Pi National Speech Tournament in Woodland Hills, CA. Rafael Gonzalez won Bronze in Prose Interpretation at the national tournament.

9. The formal spring concert of the Northeast Dance Program was a huge success with 3 sold out shows. More than 150 dancers, including the Movers Unlimited touring Dance Company, TCC NE Dance Company, 15 pathways students, and technique class students performed in this production. The performance was a big success, showing true harmony and unity as a big dance community. The students received a standing ovation after their extraordinary performances.

10. TCC Northeast Drama Discipline is gearing up for their annual Reading Is Alive! Summer

Reading Tour. Each year, TCC Northeast Drama tours an original musical, written by Instructor of Drama and Outreach Coordinator Julie M. Gale, to libraries in Tarrant County to promote reading. There will be 25 performances in Tarrant County, encouraging youth to read. The program is currently in rehearsal stages with the talented and eager theatre students and will tour June 19-July 19

11. TCC Northeast Instructor of Drama Julie M. Gale was the recipient of the Outstanding

Faculty Award in Humanities this year. In 2013-2014 she will be the Northeast Campus's new Achieving the Dream coordinator, replacing Instructor of English, Dr. Stacy Thorne.

12. Cynthia Baw, Associate Professor of English, and her students have collected school supplies for abused children to have in August when school begins. The Alliance for Children was delighted to have the school supplies delivered and ready for August.

13. The TCC Children’s Center held their annual High Hat Tea on May 3rd. Every child had a family member attend with them and everyone remembered to wear a hat!

14. The annual musical put on by the TCC NE Drama department was a phenomenal success this year. The Rocky Horror Show, directed by Adjunct Instructor Robert Neblett and designed by Technical Director Laura Mahon and Technical Associate George Miller, sold out each and every performance in the run. Also featured was a rollicking good time with an audience participation night in the last performance of the run. Audience members danced the classic “Time Warp” and sang along with the cast of the performance.

Northwest Campus, Dr. Elva LeBlanc, President

Congratulations to the graduates from the TCC Leadership and Management Series II. Graduates representing the Northwest Campus were: David Pearse, and Ebony Clark. Special thanks to those who participated in W.J. Turner Elementary School Career Day on May 23rd. Those who discussed their careers were: Eduardo Aguilar, Josh Tarbay, Jacqueline Rowe, Jacob Smith, and David Pearse. Thank you to those individuals who helped with judging at the W.J. Turner Elementary School Science Fair on May 20th. Judges included Shirley Gangwere, Latisha Kuykendall, David Pearse, Courtney Crabtree, and her husband. Joe Rode presented a workshop titled: “The Science of Happiness” to the Advising and Counseling Staff of the Trinity River campus. The program was part of an in-service held at the Botanical Gardens on May 30, 2013. Amy Sleigh accompanied five students to Ireland on Wednesday, May 15th.The 5 students were: Candace Turner, Lauren Sergeant, Erin Leighton, Jordan Roselli, and Louisa Lugo. They went on the tour with five theater students and one faculty member from Sienna Heights University in MI, seven anthropology students and one faculty member from a community college in WI, and the 3rd leg of the tour with a group of twenty in the English/Writing programs from another community college in the Mid-West. A big thank you to the car wash fundraiser: All five students were able to attend five performances at the Dublin Dance Festival and attend one Master Workshop. They returned to Texas on Saturday, May 26th. Northwest Campus student, Alexis Gray, was selected out of the 4,967 students who participated in the Student Textbook Survey to receive an Apple iPad with Retina Display.

The Business Professionals of America Students returned from the National Business Professionals of America Student Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida on May 9. We took three students and all three students placed in the top three in the nation in one of their events. The winners were: Francesca Sanoubane, 3rd Place (in the nation) for Parliamentary Procedures Sarah Dow and Maria Frias, 3rd Place (in the nation) for Small Business Management Team Jaye Simpson and Julie Russell are the co-sponsors for the organization. Lourdes Ramboa (adjunct instructor) and Zach Frolich worked tirelessly with the students to help them prepare their events. Welcome to Lisa Benedetti, the new Division Dean for Humanities at the Northwest Campus

South Campus, Dr. Peter Jordan, President

Faculty & Staff Honors:

Dr. Yojana Sharma was appointed as a reader for the College Board’s Annual Advanced Placement (AP) in Physics. Each June, global AP teachers and college faculty members gather in the United States, to evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP exams. AP Readers, high school and college educators, represent many of the finest academic institutions in the world. The AP Reading group is a unique forum in which an academic dialogue between educators is both fostered and encouraged.

Campus Events & Activities:

On April 30, 2013, the South Campus Music program sponsored a piano recital featuring nine students of Dr. Oscar Dressler, Professor of Music. With an audience of 100 family, friends, and fellow students, the students performed selections from composers as diverse as Handel, Mozart, Bach, Piazzola, Clementi, and Chopin. This performance opportunity is part of their preparation for future recitals, for auditions for admission to university music programs, and for scholarships.

On May 2, 2013, the Art program at South Campus celebrated the closing of the 2012-2013 school year with an exhibition of student artwork. A crowd of over 100 family members, friends, and faculty attended the opening of the exhibit. The highest honor, the President’s Award for ‘Best in Show’, was awarded to Mani Negarestan. Mr. Negarestan is an Art Major looking to transfer next year to a four-year college or university.

On May 1, 2013, South Campus hosted a ceremony to induct students into Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Rho Chi Chapter. The National Honor Society inducted 104 students as faculty, staff, students and family members celebrated the PTK induction. Lori King

Nelson was inducted as the incoming PTK President. Ms. King Nelson returned to school a year and a half ago after a 25+ year break from attending college. Lori has four children, between ages 36 and 11. Lori married a sailor at age 16, and had two children by the time she was 19 years old. Following her daughter’s advice, Ms. King Nelson returned to school while experiencing a divorce. Since Ms. King Nelson’s return to college, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA and has been awarded a scholarship for Texas Wesleyan upon completion of her studies on South Campus in December 2013. One of her daughter’s recently graduated from Harmony School of Innovation and is also a scholarship recipient at Texas Wesleyan. Ms. King Nelson’s mom, Jan Simcox, began her nursing career at TCC South campus when the school opened in 1967. In addition, her son-in-law is South Campus Professor, Armando Villarreal, who describes Ms. King Nelson as “a perfect example of a non-traditional student who wishes to excel and get ahead in life”. The induction ceremony concluded with Ms. King Nelson winning a $500 scholarship to continue her studies at TCC. The other officers inducted into PTK are: Brittany Trammell, Vice President of Service; Marisol Soto, Vice President of Scholarship; Danielle Johnson, Vice President of Leadership; Shanna Harp-West, Vice President of Fellowship; Elizabeth Bradley, Secretary; and LaVitta Williams, Treasurer.

Disability Support Services and the VetSuccess Center hosted an Open House for faculty, staff and students on May 1, 2013, to showcase their new facilities and provide an orientation to the building for current students. In mid-April, the offices moved into a newly renovated space designed to promote improved access to student support services. The building features larger student areas which provide greater access to computers, assistive technology, and other special equipment. In addition to the larger

student areas, the facility also includes a shared reception area and conference room along with a suite of administrative offices. A formal grand opening is planned for the campus at the beginning of Fall 2013.

On May 3, 2013, Thomas Hart, Assistant Professor of Electronics, and Spring 2013 Electronics, Engineering and Manufacturing Technology graduate, Ryan Prewitt, participated in Western Hills Elementary School’s Career Day for second, third, fourth and fifth graders. Using a laptop computer, Mr. Prewitt demonstrated the Herobot robot for nearly 125 Western Hills’ students.

Congratulations to the 1000 plus 2013 graduates of Tarrant County College, South Campus! Student Development Services hosted a reception on May 9,

2013, with approximately 30 graduate students in attendance. The program featured a brief presentation from Dr. Jordan, who reminded students of their new role as ambassadors of TCC. This celebration afforded faculty and staff the opportunity to congratulate graduates while enjoying refreshments and music.

On May 10, 2013, the collaborative effort of the South Campus Dual Credit office and the South Campus Math Department resulted in the donation of over 200 math books to South Campus’ service high schools. Recipients of the math books included Fort Worth ISD high schools: Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, O. D. Wyatt High School, Polytechnic High School, South Hills High School, and Southwest High School. Everman ISD Joe C. Bean High School, Everman Academy High School, and Harmony School of Innovation also received math books. The math books ranged from simple math to calculus, allowing the high school libraries or math departments the option to provide supplemental resources for their students.

Southeast Campus, Dr. Bill Coppola, President

Jim Bolen Mathematics Competition Four of the top 10 students in the competition were SE students. A TCC scholarship (Tyler Teachman- $1000), a UTA scholarship (William Harrod-$3000/year), and two great TCU scholarships (Thu Le-full 2-year scholarship for $73,000; Kim Biu-Dean’s scholarship for $51,000) were won by SE students. SE students placed first in both rounds of the competition (Tyler Teachman- round 1; Zachary Markson- round 2). For combined scores, four SE students placed in the top 10 (William Harrod-2nd; Tyler Teachman-4th; Tran Long-5th; Thu Le-tied for 6th/7th). Congratulations to the SE math faculty and special thanks to both Daniela Kojouharov and Carol White for coordinating the competition on the SE campus and to Nena Kabranski for the leadership of the campus Math Club.

VITA-Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program VITA is monitored by the IRS and coordinated throughout Tarrant County by Catholic Charities in agreement with the United Way of Tarrant County. The program serves low to moderate income taxpayers whose combined income is less than $50,000.00. This is the third year that SE Campus’s Accounting Department has provided students as volunteer tax preparers trained by the IRS. They have been cited for being a site with one of the highest accuracy ratings of all the VITA sites within Tarrant County. Diversity and Inclusion Academic Advisors Eddna Adams and Rhonda Hudson were selected to attend The 2013 Annual Diversity & Inclusion in Higher Education & the Workplace Conference by Ms. Shani Barrax Moore, Director of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion. This event was held in Boston, MA May 7th – 9th. NISOD Congratulations to SE Campus 2013 NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) Excellence Award recipients, Dr. Catherine Bottrell, Catherine Costello and Dr. Elizabeth Joseph. Democracy Commitment Dr. Coppola, along with a group of eight students and five instructors/administrators attended the Democracy Commitment’s 3rd Annual National Meeting in Denver, Colorado. The theme for this year’s meeting, 21st Century Citizens: Building Bridges, Solving Problems, calls attention to the educational experiences and civic skills needed by today’s college graduates.

Trinity River, Dr. Tahita Fulkerson, President

Mark Anderson, Associate Professor of Philosophy, presented “Counterfactuals, Acts, and Moral Worth” on April 6 at the North Texas Philosophical Association Annual Conference at University of North Texas and on April 20 at the Felician Ethics Conference at Felician College in Rutherford, New Jersey. On May 4, the Continuing Education Allied Health Program received a Certificate of Accreditation for the Ophthalmic Non-Clinical Assistant Program from the Commission on Accreditation of Ophthalmic Medical Programs. On May 8, the Sign Language Interpreting Program held its annual Completion Ceremony and awarded certificates of recognition to 31 students who completed the Communicator Certificate and to 25 students who completed the AAS requirements. The students later participated in TCC’s commencement ceremony. The Advisory Committee for the Sign Language Interpreting Program has approved changes to allow the program to meet the 60-hour mandate.

On May 10, Jennifer Puzick, Administrative Assistant I in Health Care Professions, was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Texas Arlington. On May 21, Cindy Mask, Instructor of Surgical Technology, received the Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists at the AST 44th Annual National Conference in New Orleans. The FAST award is one of AST’s highest honors designed to provide recognition to those members who have significantly contributed to the profession as practitioners, educators, researchers, and administrators. Recipients of the FAST are recognized as having upheld the highest standards and traditions of the surgical technology profession, including their devotion to the advancement of the practice of surgical technology through volunteer professional and community activities. On May 29, the Trinity River Campus Librarians were awarded the Spring 2013 Chancellor’s Employee Excellence Award for the creation and implementation of the Information Literacy program. The Librarians are Amber Fenton, Danelle Toups, Alex Potemkin, and Emily Billings and are led by Carol Everhart. As a result of the January 2013 volunteer effort, Kathy Gamble, Adjunct Instructor for the Physical Therapist Assistant program, is involved in a planning meeting for physical therapists and other licensed healthcare practitioners to return to Hospital Bernard Mevs, Port au Prince, Haiti for a third time. Volunteers will provide physical therapy services in the pediatric ward of the hospital. On June 6, Mark Holt, Radiologic Technology Program Coordinator, received this message from one of his students: “Hello Mr. Holt, Just wanted to inform you that I have officially and successfully completed my B.S.R.S at MSU! Attached is a photo from graduation. I graduated cum laude as well! Some more good news: The week after graduation I was awarded an Auxiliary Scholarship from Harris. Earlier this week I also received a letter of my acceptance into the Masters program at MSU, as well as another scholarship from them! I just wanted to thank you, if it wasn't for you and the program at TCC I would not be where I am today professionally and academically. I start my program in September, so I will keep you posted as well in this next academic chapter in my life. Hope you are doing well! Kaye L. Mariani-Hall” (photo attached)

Workforce Services

• Tarrant County College in partnership with Trinity River Continuing Education Services is proud to announce the completion of the second cohort of Ophthalmic Assistant students. The eight students graduated from the program on May 1, 2013. Five of the eight students were GED graduates from TCC Learning Opportunity Centers. Ms. Luzmaria Perez initially came to TCC as an ESL student in Miss Sharee Davis’ class at Water from the Rock in 2009. Since completing English as a Second Language classes, Ms. Perez has earned her GED, earned an Office Assistant Level 1 Certificate at TCC Southeast Campus, and is now an Ophthalmic Assistant graduate. She is an inspiration to her peers and is living proof that with hard work and dedication, anyone can achieve their dream!

• Janet Younger, Coordinator of Special Projects represented Tarrant County College District, Workforce Services on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 in Austin on the team meeting for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment. During this meeting, the team reviewed the assessment instrument content items and set statewide standard cut-scores. The TSI assessment instrument, for placement and diagnostics, will classify students if they are college ready. If a student is not college ready, they will enroll in developmental or Adult Basic Education (ABE) levels in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

• The Small Business Development Center is bringing in nationally known retail consultant, Marc Willson, to provide guidance and consulting services to Tarrant County retailers and restaurateurs, June 3-7. The SBDC is cooperating with several area economic development groups such as the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce and the Camp Bowie District to bring Marc to their members. During his time with the TCC SBDC, Marc will be working directly with many small businesses throughout Tarrant County promoting the services of the SBDC and helping business owners improve operations.

• Small Business Development Center Director, Wayne Huddleston, graduated from Leadership North Texas in May. Leadership North Texas is a graduate-level regional leadership program of the North Texas Commission designed to recruit, develop and support leaders who have a commitment to civic engagement and to the North Texas region.

Corporate Services

• Corporate Services has hosted several corporate companies including Grover Corporation, Lasko Products, and Restoration Hardware, at the TCC Opportunity Center and giving them tours of the facility.

• Jennifer Hawkins, Director of Corporate Services, presented at the Texas Administrators of Continuing Education (TACE) conference. Several colleges were in attendance, including Grayson College who, after attending the presentation, invited Ms. Hawkins to their college to give a short presentation to their faculty and staff, and then discuss our Manufacturing Consortium and partnership with our local Tarrant County Workforce Board.

• On May 9, 2013, Chancellor Hadley hosted the North Texas Lead Board of Directors meeting at the Opportunity Center. Jennifer Hawkins, Director of Corporate Services, was invited to speak at this meeting about the Opportunity Center and Corporate Services.

• For the consecutive year in a row Tarrant County College Corporate Services has been selected by one of our company partners, Samsill, as one of their “Best of the Best” suppliers for 2012. They will honor Corporate Services with a lunch and present us with an award as Samsill celebrates their 60th year in business.

Real Estate & Facilities, Nina Petty As of April 2013, Chad Crocker, Director of Facilities Operations was elected as a Board Member of TAPPA (Texas Association of Physical Plant Administrators), a regional chapter of a non-profit organization that promotes common interests, proficiency and professionalism in college and university Physical Plant operations and personnel across the state. Additionally, Chad was elected in May 2013 as a Board Member of DFWAPPA (Dallas Fort Worth Association of Physical Plant Administrators) the local chapter of APPA a non-profit organization that promotes common interests, proficiency and professionalism in college and university Physical Plant operations and personnel across the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex.

Communications & External Affairs Division, Reginald Gates

Office of Grants Development and Compliance

• The Office of Grants Development (OGD) was notified by the Texas Workforce Commission in April that TCCD’s application for Summer Merit Program STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Camps was selected for funding ($150,760). At least 175 eligible high school youth will participate in seven different STEM theme camps held at Northeast, South, Southeast, and Trinity River Campuses. TCC-Trinity River Campus Continuing Education Services Vice President Dr. Robert Muñoz has been selected as overall project manager, working with the other CES Vice Presidents to implement the project.

• OGD was also notified by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in May that TCCD’s application for Texas-STEM Scholarship Program (T-STEM) funds has been awarded funding ($244,700). These scholarships will provide up to $2,500 annually to each of nearly 100 qualified TCC students majoring in STEM fields. AVC for Enrollment Services David Ximenez will be the Project Manager, and Director of Program Development Sheryl Harris will serve as Co-Manager.

• Since November 2012, the Office of Grants Development and Office of Grants Compliance have trained a total of 70 TCCD employees in grants development and grants management processes (241+ contact hours).

College Access and Community Outreach

• As of the spring 2013 semester, the College Access and Community Outreach team has expanded the College Connections Program to 51 of the 65 high schools in Tarrant County.

Title III

On Thursday, May 23, 2013 Tarrant County College's Title III Project SSStrong Grant sponsored the 3rd Annual Student Development and Success Institute. Two hundred and thirty-three (233) staff, faculty and administrators participated in the day's activities. "Thinking Critically About Completion" was the theme of the event, and was integrated into messages from presenters and the key note speaker Dr. Mark Milliron. Dr. Milliron, Chancellor of Western Governors University Texas, provided information to assist the college community with understanding changing student populations while challenging them to work hard for success. Dr. Peter Doolittle, Professor of Educational Psychology at Virginia Tech University, led breakout sessions designed to help students complete their tasks, goals and programs of study. Other breakout sessions increased knowledge in areas of Automatic Graduation, TCC's Innovation Forum, Academic Success Updates, Lean Process Improvement, SmartThinking on-line Tutoring, and Mentoring's impact on student success.

The evening prior to the Student Development and Success Institute Dr. Doolittle conducted a session for 63 TCC faculty and administrators. This pre-institute meeting provided increased understanding on how to effectively challenge students in the classroom with more thoughtful instruction and curriculum development.
